The University of Denver hockey team started off the second half of the season the same way they began it.  Scoring plenty of goals goals and playing stifling defense on Saturday night at Magness Arena.

Shawn Ostrow, Zac Larraza, Quinten Shore, Nick Shore, Chris Knowlton & Nolan Zajac scored for DU.

Pioneers goaltender Juho Olkinoura recorded his third career shutout while BU was shutout for the first time in 125 games.  The longest such streak in college hockey.

Boston Bad Boyz Part II: Sex In The Penalty Box

When Boston University released its report Wednesday on hockey players’ “culture of sexual entitlement,” it kept most of the investigation details — including accounts of sexual debauchery and wide-ranging allegations of academic trouble — confined to confidential subcommittee reports.

Here are the highlights:

At a 2009 NCAA championship party at Agganis Arena dozens of guests drank from kegs in the locker room showers and took to the ice naked to shoot pucks.  At the same party people were having sex in the penalty box.

One player told the task force, “You don’t ask [permission for sex] when you are drunk,” adding that he did not see how the actions of the two players charged last year constituted sexual assault.

A BU student told of Facebook postings, “in which hockey players boast about their sexual exploits,” referring to conquests as “kills.”

The subcommittee findings also noted that some BU hockey players have SAT scores “far below the vast majority of their classmates.”

Faculty members gave the task force mixed assessments of hockey players as students. One professor described them as “respectful, prepared, and active.” But another told of six players who intimidated classmates, answered their cellphones mid-lecture, and “tried to ‘hijack’ his course,” the report says. The professor told the leader of the group to shape up; instead, all six players dropped the class.

Parker & his coaching staff were essentially given carte blanche for overseeing the team’s behavior. One team member said Parker “cares too much about hurting the important players’ feelings. . . . He’ll criticize, then apologize.”

A Boston University task force has concluded that the men’s hockey team is detached from the general campus and that a “culture of sexual entitlement” exists among some players, a mindset college officials say contributed to two alleged sexual assaults on campus during the past season.

“Our assessment has shown that a culture of sexual entitlement exists among some players on the men’s ice hockey team, stemming in part from their elevated social status on campus,” stated the 11-page report, which was released today. 

University officials said the culture is marked by heavy alcohol use and casual sexual encounters, and called for a range of reforms to tighten oversight of the team and bring it more into the fold of campus life [read entire article].

LetsGoDU Names BU Team "Bad Boyz Of The Year"

On the holiest of college hockey days, when the Hobey Baker Committee awards its grand prize to the best player, LetsGoDU awards its 2012 Bad Boyz Of The Year Award.

For the first time ever an entire hockey team has walked away with the prestigious Golden Handcuffs.  2011-12 was the "Year of the Felony."  College hockey players players took social irresponsibility to to a new low.  But no individual or team did more to sully its reputation than the once mighty Boston University hockey program.

Gone are the days of bar fights, pinching co-eds in bars, drunk driving and missing curfew.  Now the buzzwords are money laundering, sexual assault and battery.

Boston University senior and Hockey East leading goal scorer Corey Trivino kicked things off in December charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery. Charlie Coyle, a Minnesota Wild prospect, quit the BU hockey team five days after Trivino’s arrest, saying he was “done being a student-athlete’’ and wanted to focus fully on hockey.  Not to be outdone, Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the BU men’s hockey team, was arrested in February by the Boston University Police and charged with sexual assault.

Trivinio was a two-time Bad Boyz contender.  Back in May 2010, Trivino was suspended for an alcohol-related incident before the Hockey East semifinals and missed time at the start of the 2010-11 season.

Runner-Up - Michael Colavecchia, after completing his freshman hockey season (6g, 12a) at Rochester Institute of Technology, was arrested over the Summer and charged with money laundering and conspiracy in an alleged scheme to defraud the Toronto Transit Commission.

Schlossman's Blog: DU vs. UND Drew Strong Ratings

Friday night’s game was the highest-rated college game on NBC Sports Network this season, drawing about 86,000 viewers for a game that started at 10 p.m. Eastern. The primetime game — Boston University vs. Vermont — drew 38,000.

Saturday night’s game was broadcasted by Root Sports Rocky Mountain and it also was that network’s highest-rated game of the year in the Denver market.

DU's Future Schedules Include Pleasant Surprises

Next season will be the University of Denver's final season in the WCHA. The DU hockey staff has been been busy working on next year's schedule and the complexities of forming the National Collegiate Hockey Association in 2013 and beyond.

The Presidential Debate at Magness Arena [Oct. 3rd] may impact the hockey practice and exhibition schedule, but it remains to be seen if any regular season games have to be juggled.

Boston University will visit the Pioneers next season for in the U.S. Hall of Fame Game. DU hosted this event in 2008 against Notre Dame and the Hall of Fame Dinner the night before featured Bret Hull and several other USA hockey legends inductions. The dinner was hosted at on the floor of Magness Arena and it was an epic evening.

Cornell will visit DU for a two game series next season. This will be a rematch of the incredible 1969 National Championship Game played in the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs featuring future NHL legends Ken Dryden, Keith Magnuson, Craig Patrick & George Morrison. DU won 4-3 on Tom Miller's goal with less than 10 minutes to play.

The University of New Hampshire will be the marquee program visiting Magness Arena for the Denver Cup.

In a surprising development, Minnesota and Wisconsin are negotiating with DU to visit Denver every other season, while the Pioneers will return the visits in alternating years. It is exciting to hear that these rivalries will continue despite the departures from the WCHA. Minnesota and Wisconsin alums in Colorado will be thrilled to hear of this development.

Starting in 2013-14 DU will play the Air Force twice per season.  This great rivalry has become very popular recently, so doubling the number of games against Air Force will be another positive scheduling move.

DU is in conversations with the Boston schools about continuing the cross-country rivalries.

With NCHC league play against Miami, North Dakota, Colorado College, Minnesota-Duluth and an emerging rivalry with road-trip potential against Nebraska-Omaha there are exciting times ahead for DU hockey fans.

Bad Boyz: Boston University Star Arrested

Boston University senior and Hockey East leading goal scorer Corey Trivino was arrested Sunday night and charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery.

According to the police report, the incident began when a female Resident Assistant heard residents of a room being extremely loud. The RA went to the room to tell them to quiet down, and Trivino followed her back to her room and pushed her door open, the report states. She said in the report that she told Trivino to go back to his room, but instead he allegedly started kissing and groping the victim. The victim told Trivino he was being inappropriate and should leave her room, and he left, according to the police report.

A few minutes later, Trivino allegedly returned and was banging on her door. The RA opened the door slightly and Trivino tried to kiss her, but she pushed him away, according to the police report. The RA said in the police report that she told Trivino "You need to stop," and "You need to go." Trivino allegedly cornered the victim by her desk and attempted to kiss her as she pushed him away, the police report said. She said in the police report that she managed to get him to leave at that time and she then texted a friend for help.

Trivino then returned a third time and banged loudly on the door, according to the report. The victim said in the report that she needed to open the door as part of her RA duties. Trivino allegedly forced his way in again and tried to kiss her, then sat on her bed, took his shoes off, said he would sleep there that night and laid down.

At that time, the RA called the Resident Director of the area, the police report said. When Trivino heard her on the phone with the Resident Director, he put his shoes on and ran out of her room, the police report said, and then the Resident Director told the RA to call the BU police.

According to the police report, "a very intoxicated male" got on the elevator with the police responding to the call. The male identified himself as Trivino and identified his room number as that of the RA, the police report said, at which time he was arrested.

Trivino, also charged with two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime and one count of assault with attempt to rape, is no longer a member of the hockey team, head coach Jack Parker said in the article.

Back in May 2010, Trivino was suspended for an alcohol-related incident before the Hockey East semifinals and missed time at the start of the 2010-11 season.   He also missed part on the 2010 season with a broken leg.

Trivino had 13 goals and 17 points in 15 games this season and ends his Terriers’ career with 73 points in 112 games. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2008.

The University of Denver hockey team fell behind Boston University 1-0 on Saturday night after one period. But it was a disastrous second period that cost them the game.

Two of BU's early second period goals were shorthanded on the same power play.

Luke "Goal Czar" Salazar started a belated DU comeback in the third period. John Lee followed that up with a goal from the blueline to cut the lead in half.

Drew Shore pulled the Pioneers within one with two and half minutes left after Gwozdecky pulled Adam Murray to skate 6 on 5. DU continued to pressure the BU goalie but couldn't get the tying goal in. A controversial holding call against Beau Bennett with 28 seconds to play sealed DU's fate.

The University of Denver hockey team is ranked third in Monday's USCHO.com's Division I Ice Hockey Poll. 

Boston College is ranked #1 on the eve of Friday night's showdown against DU in Boston.  The game  will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network at 5:30 PM MT [Friday, Oct. 14th].

On Saturday night the Pioneers will face #8 Boston University.

DU Misses Out On Last-Minute Defensive Recruit

When Northeastern University head hockey coach Greg Cronin left the school for an NHL coaching position with the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer, it set off a chain reaction. Several players looked into transfering, one star defected to major juniors and recruits considered decommitting. Prized blueline recruit Garrett Haar weighed his options, and with his stock on the rise, decided to see what schools might be interested.

In no time Haar had offers from Western Michigan, Boston College, Boston University, Denver and Minnesota-Duluth. On Monday he decided to attend Western Michigan.

Haar, an offensive defenseman, played for the USHL’s Fargo Force last season tallying 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) and a plus/minus rating of plus nine in 51 games before being drafted by the Washington Capitals in the seventh round (207th overall).

Capitals’ General Manager George McPhee called Haar “the biggest surprise of the camp,” in a July 16 Washington Post story on the team’s development camp. “For a young man that was four picks away from not being drafted, he really played well here,” McPhee continued. “Liked his hockey sense, the way he competed I like the way he defends and he looks real strong on his skates.”

Anthony Maiani scored a goal in his first professional game for the ECHL Wheeling Nailers. It was an important goal because the team has to finalize its playoff roster today, so Maiani only had one opportunity to show the team what he could do.  Wheeling defeated the Toledo Walleye 4-3 and clinched a playoff berth.

Mandi Schwartz, the Yale hockey player and sister of Colorado College players Jaden and Rylan, passed away Sunday in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was 23. Schwartz learned in December 2008 that she had acute myeloid leukemia.  Best wishes to her family, fans and friends.

Colorado Avalanche center and DU Alum Paul Stastny won't play again this season because of a stress fracture in his leg discovered in a weekend examination.

DU alum Chris Butler gave the Buffalo Sabres an early lead midway through the first by finishing a 3-on-2 rush with his first goal in 15 months. Trailing the play, he took a cross-ice feed from Stafford and snapped the puck high past Ward from the right circle.  Buffalo defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in overtime.

The Junior Pioneers ended up collecting Bronze Medals at the PeeWee Under-12 National Championships (Tier II).  They defeated host San Jose Jr. Sharks 3-2 before falling to the Red Bank Generals 2-1 in overtime in the Semi-Finals.  Congrats to all the Junior Pioneer players for representing Colorado so well.

BU Bad Boy Kicked Off Team For Studying Too Much

After being abrubtly cut from the Boston University squad earlier this month, junior forward Andrew Glass gave his side of the story to the Boston Hockey Blog.

BU coach Jack Parker said he dismissed Glass for violating team rules, but Glass rebuffs that, saying he missed two meetings and missed a pre-holiday practice, later changed to a workout, due to a final exam.

“By NCAA rules,” Glass said, “a team cannot have organized practices or workouts during exam week and based upon the past two years, if you had conflicts, you completed the workouts on your own time. Not only was I studying in the library, but I came right afterwards around 3:30 to workout.

“I was the only player on the team to have a final exam the next day, and because the team was in New York for the majority of the weekend, I had little time to study. Nonetheless, I figured that taking care of my academics was something I shouldn’t have to explain, let alone get punished for” [Read rest of article].

Six NCAA Coaches Met With NHL Management

University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky, Minnesota coach Don Lucia, Miami’s Rico Blasi, Jack Parker of Boston University, Michigan’s Red Berenson and Ted Donato of Harvard met with the NHL brass in Toronto this week.

The meeting, which Gwozdecky said included four NHL general managers, was about “the challenges we’re facing with the collective bargaining agreement coming up in (2011).”

Bad Boyz: BU Hockey Star Kicked Off Team

Sophomore Vinny Saponari, a two-year starter with the Boston University men’s hockey team, said Tuesday he was “shocked” by his dismissal from the Terrier squad earlier that morning.

“I just found out today, like all of you, and I’m pretty shocked, just as shocked as everyone else,” Saponari said. “I didn’t see this coming. I know I’d made some mistakes as far as rules go, but I really didn’t think it would lead to this.”

In a meeting Tuesday morning with BU coach Jack Parker, Saponari was informed that he would be dismissed from the team. Saponari was told by Parker that he was being dismissed for breaking a team drinking rule, and then showing up late to the subsequent team bike ride, which was punishment for breaking the team rules.

His brother Victor Saponari was dismissed yesterday from the Boston University men's hockey team, and sophomore Corey Trivino will be suspended for multiple games to begin the 2010-11 season, according to a press release put out by the team today.

“Over a period of time, there have been cumulative instances in which Victor and Vinny Saponari have displayed conduct unbecoming of a Boston University hockey player,” BU coach Jack Parker said in the release. “In a related issue, Trivino will be suspended for the early part of next season.”

The were suspended in connection with an alcohol-related incident that occurred less than 48 hours before a playoff game, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Rising senior goalie Adam Kraus, who was also involved in the incident, could possibly be suspended as well.

Sources said the coaching staff was recently informed that the four players were drinking on the night of March 17, less than 48 hours before the Terriers’ Hockey East semifinal matchup with the University of Maine. BU’s season came to an end with a 5-2 loss in that game.

Victor Saponari and Kraus are both of legal drinking age, but a long-standing team rule forbids players from drinking on any night other than Saturday. Vinny Saponari and Trivino are both underage.

According to sources, there were several other incidents that occurred during the season that factored into the punishments. WTBU Sports is reporting that Victor Saponari skipped a practice.

Back in 2007, four players, all of age, were suspended indefinitely for drinking on a Sunday afternoon. They returned to practice five days later and missed two games.

In 82 career games at BU, Vinny Saponari tallied 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists), while his brother, Victor, dished out two assists in 14 career games.

New York Times Covers Denver Cup Victory

The holiday season may be over, but college hockey’s schedule was full of holiday tournaments this weekend before conference play dominates the second-half race to the finish. While most of the tournaments feature a grab-bag of quality teams and subpar competition, the Denver Cup has traditionally served as a great appetizer for the stretch run. Last season, Boston University took the Cup on its way to a national championship.

The University of Denver played host for the 18th time, and the No. 2-ranked Pioneers twice rallied from two goals behind to overcome fifth-ranked Boston College, which has suddenly emerged as a serious contender in its own right. The Pioneers have jostled with Miami (Ohio) atop the rankings all season long and are gaining steam as the second half begins. Tournament victories, even in early January, can be a barometer of a team’s playoff-tested approach once the postseason begins.

A slow start put the Cup in jeopardy for the Pioneers, but a four-goal period brought them back to win, 4-3, sparked by two goals and an assist from the captain Rhett Rakhshani, who was the tournament’s M.V.P. Rakhshani also had 3 points in Denver’s 7-0 throttling of Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the mini-tournament.

He told The Denver Post that he liked the way the team responded after falling behind early, saying “the most fun thing about it was the team coming together –- coaches captains, everyone -– after the first period.”

Both B.C. and Denver were missing key players to the World Junior Championships in Saskatchewan. Eagles forward Chris Kreider and Pioneers defenseman Matt Donovan each scored goals for the United States in a quarterfinal win over Finland on Saturday. The Americans took down Sweden on Sunday to advance to Tuesday’s final, where they will meet Canada, which is looking for its sixth straight gold medal. Canada won the teams’ first meeting, a 5-4 shootout thriller on New Year’s Eve.

Once Donovan returns to Denver and league play resumes, the Pioneers look primed to continue their success into the spring. The senior Rakhshani — a future New York Islander -– is tied for sixth in the country with 27 points and gives Denver a potent offensive threat. At the unofficial midpoint of the season the Pioneers already have eight players with double-digit point totals.

6 On 3 Hockey May Become The Norm

USCHO.com has an article on employing the 6 on 3 power play strategy. Its a pretty interesting article and quotes BU's Coach Parker & Coach Gwozdecky at length.

Denver coach George Gwozdecky is probably the most famous college coach when it comes to defending against a 6-on-3, as the Pioneers hung on for a 1-0 victory over Maine in the 2004 national championship game due to successfully thwarting the Black Bears’ six skaters.

While Gwozdecky has no immediate plans to employ the tactic in the middle of a game, it’s not for lack of enthusiasm about the concept.

“First of all, it’s a real good bet that you’re going to score, and it’s extremely difficult for the other team to score,” he said. “In Europe, they’ve been doing it for many years.”

Gwozdecky remembered hearing about it from coaches at the Huron Hockey School back in the early 1980s because it was popular in Sweden and Finland and Germany.

“There are a number of different schemes that they used,” Gwozdecky said. “In fact, in Sweden it was very popular for three of the six players on the power play to just be used for picking purposes. The other three would be trying to find open ice in the zone, while those three guys would just be there to pick. So it was something that has always been on the back burner with coaches who are aware of the tactic overseas [read entire article].

Boston University May Return To Denver Cup

The University of Denver's 2009-2010 hockey schedule hasn't been released yet but a few dates on the upcoming season have been compiled from various sources. We've cobbled together DU's upcoming season based on other schools' schedules and DU's rotating WCHA opponents.

An email to DU season ticket holders said Boston College would be at the Denver Cup.

However a newspaper article back east said that defending National Champion Boston University may be making its second consecutive trip to the Denver Cup. The only teams that has officially been confirmed for the Denver Cup are St. Lawrence University & Boston College. St. Lawrence coach Joe Marsh said he believed "Boston University was in the mix."

BU Recruited Against DU To Reach Frozen Four

The names and faces that dot Jack Parker's two NCAA championship teams at Boston University, first in 1978 and then in 1995, form a tapestry of Massachusetts hockey history that appears woven from the same cloth. Irish and Italian last names, churned out by the same Catholic prep schools.

The makeup of this year's team, the first Terriers squad to reach the Frozen Four since 1997, represents how much Boston University has had to adapt to the changing recruiting game. Players are coming from more places than ever before, and many of the top college bound talent isn't staying in high school. Instead, they're going to junior hockey leagues or the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Seven players on this year's team came from the U.S. under-18 team, which has become something of a clearinghouse for the best high school talent in the country. Another nine came from various U.S. junior leagues. Just nine players on this year's team are from Massachusetts, and two more are from Connecticut.

BU star player Collin Wilson, a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award — college hockey's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy — might be as good an example of an unusual recruit as anyone. He grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and said the only Division I school looking at him before he went to Ann Arbor was Bemidji State.

Once he started playing in the program, first for the under-17 team and then for the under-18 team, that quickly changed. In the team's barnstorming schedule of exhibitions against major college teams, Wilson played before scouts every night. He heard from more than 30 teams and narrowed his list to Colorado College, Denver, North Dakota and Boston University.

It has helped put Parker back on the map. He's still somewhat nostalgic for the days of teams loaded with New Englanders, but he knows surviving in today's college hockey world requires something different now.

"It'd be nice if Massachusetts could get back to producing a lot of great hockey players again. But in the time being, we can recruit Western Canada against North Dakota or against Denver, go out and recruit in the Midwest against Michigan," Parker said. "We still don't have a lot of success in Minnesota. Pulling kids out of Minnesota is a very difficult situation. But other than that state, we can go anywhere we want."

LetsGoDU and our alumni donors will introduce our new mascot in a ceremony at 10 AM on Friday, April 10th at the Lincoln Memorial. Many DU alums, students & hockey fans will be in Washington D.C. for the Frozen Four hockey national championships featuring Boston University, Vermont, Miami (Ohio) & Bemidji State.

The University of Denver was founded in 1864 the year that President Lincoln was re-elected for his 2nd term as president. What better place to introduce our Baby Boone to the world?

Thursday, April 9th

10 AM - Mascot Dress Rehearsal with Scott Fuson @ Sofitel Hotel

1 PM - Lunch @ The Bombay Club. We're going to kick things off with a great Indian lunch. (all are welcome)

5 PM - NCAA Hockey Semi-Final @ Verizon Center. Bemidji State vs. Miami (Ohio)

8:30 PM - NCAA Hockey Semi-Final @ Verizon Center. BU vs. Vermont

Friday, April 10th

10 AM - Pioneer Mascot Ceremony @ Lincoln Memorial. We'll introduce our new mascot & take photos. Honored guest Harold Beier (DU '47) will speak. (all are welcome)

Noon Lunch - If weather cooperates will probably do a picnic lunch at one of the parks/historical sites in the area (all are welcome)

Afternoon Sightseeing - The masses rule on this tour of DC. (all are welcome)

6 PM - Scott Fuson & Pioneer Mascot depart Baltimore for Denver.

7-9 PM Dinner @ Old Ebitt Grill. Classic American food, great bar. (all are welcome)

Saturday, April 11

DENVER - 9 AM DU Tennis @ Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. The mascot will be attending the women's tennis match against Northern Colorado.

DENVER - 1:30 PM DU Lax @ Invesco Field. The mascot will attend the DU men's lacrosse game against Notre Dame at the home of the Denver Broncos.

WASHINGTON - 8:30 PM EST. NCAA National Championship Game
