Former DU Recruit Tyler Pham Heads To West Point

Monty continues to juggle the incoming recruiting classes as a third recruit in recent weeks falls off the DU recruiting radar.  Tyler Pham originally committed to the University of Denver in November 2009 as a 15 year-old.  Despite several seasons in the USHL, Pham's stats and his stature never reached the levels necessary to become a bona fide D-1 hockey player.

Pham recently tweeted that he will attend West Point.

Landon Smith and Cody Depourcq recently decommitted as well.

Coach Montgomery is looking for players that will fit his system and it appears, these three recruits won't fit his style of play.

Swedish Forward Sebastian Fuchs Commits To DU

From: Pennisula Clarion
by Jeff Helminiak

DU landed another player from Europe when forward Sebastian Fuchs [5'10 174 lbs. age 17] verbally committed to the University of Denver on Monday. Fuchs is from Lidingo, Sweden but is playing for the NAHL Kenai River Brown Bears in, Alaska this season.

“Denver hockeywise and collegewise sounded perfect,” Fuchs said.

“DU has proud tradition,” Brown Bears head coach Geoff Beauparlant said of the Pioneers.  They are getting a quality person and an extremely talented young hockey player.”

The coach said Fuchs got Denver’s interest at the early season NAHL Showcase in Minnesota. On Nov. 1, the Bears returned to Minnesota to face the Austin Bruins and Fuchs was offered the Denver scholarship on the way home from that trip. Fuchs said there were other schools interested in him, but Denver sounded like the best option.

Fuchs has six goals and nine assists for the Bears in 18 games this season.

“The biggest thing is his ice awareness and vision with and without the puck,” Beauparlant said.

Fuchs continues a successful relationship between the Bears and Scandinavian Hockey Consulting, founded in 2009 to help European players transition to the American junior and college ranks.

The college commitment is the reward Fuchs received for deciding to leave his home country at such an early age.

Fuchs can’t go to the Pioneers until the 2015-16 season at the earliest, but he could go play for the higher-level United States Hockey League next season. “It’s a great challenge for us to make sure he is ready, whether he remains with this organization or moves on to the USHL,” Beauparlant said.

Monty Lands Three Canadian Forward Recruits

Three Canadian born forward recruits made verbal commitments to the University of Denver this week.  Jarid Lukosevicius, Liam Finlay & Logan O'Connor will attend DU in upcoming seasons.

Jarid Lukosevicius [5’11 165 lbs] is slotted to arrive at DU in 2015.  He started well in his first full BCHL campaign, scoring 5 goals and adding 10 assists in his first 14 games. Lukosevicius was named to the Canada West selection camp roster for the upcoming 2013 World Junior A Challenge.

For Lukosevicius, selecting a school and committing to a higher level of hockey was a new experience. “I didn’t know much about American colleges before the season, but I knew that Denver was an excellent school. When they made me an offer, I knew I had to accept it”

“Denver is a very reputable program” says Kings Head Coach and GM Kent Lewis. “They’ve got a very good staff, it’s a great place to live, and they’ve certainly recruited some great BCHL players over the years. They’ve done a great job in recruiting and we are happy for Jarid and his family that he has made the decision to go to Denver.”

Lewis believes Lukosevicius’ start to the season was just one contributing factor to Denver pursuing the 18 year-old winger. “Schools have been tracking him since last season when he was one of the top players on the North West Giants who won the BC Major Midget League” says Lewis. “He’s a good player, and he’s going to get better. These type of players don’t come along very often. His shot is hard and accurate, he sees the ice very well and he’s got a really high compete level.”

Coach David Michaud announced that Liam Finlay will attend DU, "Liam's development has progressed rapidly since joining the British Columbia Major Midget League last season as a 15 year old. To have one of our players commit to an elite NCAA Division 1 hockey program early in his second year of midget hockey is a very rare occurrence and speaks to Liam's dedication and perseverance.”

To date with the Okanagan Rockets, Finlay has posted 16 goals and 52 assists in just 48 regular season games played.  This season, he has 6 goals and 12 assists for 18 points in just 7 BCMML games. Finlay recently committed to play the 2014-15 season with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). As a reserve player for Penticton this season, Finlay has one assist in three games played.

Finlay is very excited about his decision to commit to the Pioneers. "In researching NCAA hockey programs with my family, we felt that the University of Denver (DU) was a model program. DU has an excellent reputation both academically and scholastically. I am very interested in their business program and, of course, the long track record of Denver Pioneer hockey success was very appealing.”

Logan O'Connor moved down to the USA this winter to play hockey for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL.  Last seasonhe 5-foot-11, 165-pound winger recorded 23 points (7g, 16a) in 34 games for the Calgary Royals Midget AAA team. He helped lead the Royals into the playoffs where he posted four points (1g, 3a) in five games.

DU Receives Commitment From Tariq Hammond

Calgary native Tariq Hammond [6'2 185 lbs.] of the Okotoks Oilers [AJHL] committed to the University of Denver over the weekend.  Hammond, a defenseman, scored 9 goals and 32 assists in 108 career games in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Tariq’s father, Jon Hammond, was a member of the Regina Pats Memorial Cup winning team in 1974 and his grandfather was in the New York Rangers system.

Former NHLer Rob Tudor [Vancouver, St. Louis] is Tariq's billet family in Okotoks.

Hammond is regarded as a late-bloomer, often overlooked in minor hockey at young age, but has progressed steadily in recent years.

Former DU Recruit Commits To North Dakota

by Brad Schlossman

The University of North Dakota lined up a defensive corps for next season that was made up almost entirely of puck-moving, offensive defensemen.

But when Denver coach George Gwozdecky was fired last month, it started a sequence of events that would ultimately give UND a key piece that was missing in the puzzle for the 2013-14 squad.

East Grand Forks native Gage Ausmus, a stay-at-home shutdown defenseman, gave a verbal commitment Thursday to play for UND beginning in the fall.

Ausmus, who played for the U.S. Under-18 team this season and won a silver medal at the World Under-18 Championship, will add some grit and physicality to UND’s defensive corps — elements that will be welcome.

“They are losing (Andrew) MacWilliam and (Derek) Forbort, two physical, strong guys,” said Ausmus, who is expected to be a late-round NHL draft pick in June. “They (the coaching staff) thought I’d fit into that role really well.”

Ausmus originally committed to the University of Denver two summers ago, but those plans changed when Gwozdecky was suddenly fired on April 1.

“When Gwozdecky left, I didn’t think it was the best option for me anymore,” Ausmus said.

After Denver hired Jim Montgomery as Gwozdecky’s replacement, Ausmus re-considered going to Denver. He also considered Minnesota Duluth — where his father played football — but ultimately decided to stay home.

DU Recruit Trevor Moore Leads Team In Scoring

Trevor Moore
From: StormHockey.com

Tri-City Storm forward Trevor Moore has really elevated his game during his second season in Kearney, Nebraska. Moore is currently leading the team in scoring with 54 points on 19 goals and 35 assists this season. He ranks thirteenth in the USHL in overall scoring and his 35 assists are ninth best in the league.

With nine games to go, Moore has already improved on his numbers from last season, when he had 32 points on 12 goals and 20 assists. His 55 career assists and 86 career points are fifth and eighth-best respectively in team history.

The forward said his success is partly due to a higher level of confidence this season.

“I think I’m more confident with the puck,” Moore said. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger since I’ve been here and my battling skills have improved. I’m able to hold on to the puck and I know I can make plays.”

The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native will turn 18 at the end of the monthand will as a freshman at the University of Denver this fall.

“I think Denver is a great place to play hockey and the atmosphere is unbelievable” Moore said. They’ve always been competitive and I’m looking to win a championship there.”

The school will be part of the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

“They talk to me quite a bit,” Moore said of his future university. “They want me to keep working out and getting stronger because in college there are a lot of bigger, stronger, older guys and they want me to be able to come in and compete.”

Although he’s happy with the success he’s enjoyed this season, Moore knows there’s still work to be done.

“Right now, I just need to keep working hard,” Moore said. “It’s easier to get tired at the end of the year and get lazy but you really have to work hard and grind it out.”

DU Recruit Brad Hawkinson Profiled

(above) DU recruit Brad hawkinson is playing for the USHL Lincoln Stars this season
From: Lincoln Star Journal

Brad Hawkinson: 18-y.o. Forward 5-11", 190 Lbs. Aurora, CO.

“Two years ago, I played three or four games (for the Lincoln Stars as a fill-in player), and then last year was my first full season here. I was playing midget hockey in Colorado at the time. It was kind of cool. I got to play in the home opener, and we never played in front of fans back in Colorado, so it was kind of a shock. It was kind of a shock that they called me up, but it was a lot of fun. The game was just so much faster than what I was used to.

“Earlier this season we had a few guys injured and we were short some defensemen. I’m kind of a defensive-center anyway, and they asked me if I could jump back and play defenseman.

“I’ve never really played D in my life, so they threw me in against these forwards that are NHL Draft picks, so it was kind of a shock. You just have to be aware of where they are on the ice. It’s a lot more pressure back there. I’d never admit that to the D, but it’s stressful.

“I’m committed to the University of Denver, and I’ll go in next year. I’ve wanted to go there since I was a tiny kid growing up. That’s all I really knew as far as college hockey. I committed two years ago when I was a junior. The coach that recruited me, Derek Lalonde, had coached me growing up through DU summer camps that I always used to go to. Now he is actually the head coach (of the United States Hockey League’s Green Bay Gamblers).

“My most memorable goal in the USHL is when I scored in overtime last year in Fargo to close out a (second-round) playoff series. That was pretty cool. I remember everything about it, pretty much. It was my first shift in overtime, and I didn’t even know if I’d get to go out in overtime. Ralfs Freibergs, he’s at Bowling Green now, threw one at the net, it went off my shin pad and right to my stick. I just took a whack at it and it went home. It was kind of cool to score a goal of that importance. I hadn’t really scored that much that season.

“Kevin Roy, (the Stars' record-holder with 54 goals in one season), was my roommate last year. We still keep in real close touch, and hopefully we’ll hang out again this summer somewhere. At first, I didn’t really know who he was, and I’m like, ‘Oh, great, they put me with the French-Canadian kid.’ He came to tryout wearing a pink headband and capri pants and I was like, ‘Come on.’ We ended up being best friends and we’re still best friends to this day.

“(Roy) was a great kid. He never talked about how many goals he had or how sick he was. He helped me along, and I helped him out with stuff off the ice. We were good for each other. He didn’t have his driver’s license all year. I drove him around the entire year — to school, practice, friends' houses. Everywhere. And then he decides to get his license a week before we leave. That one week before we went home, he drove everywhere.

“My dad was a fighter pilot in the Air Force for 20 years. My mom and I lived in Utah at the time, and he was stationed in Saudi Arabia. The only sport that we got in Utah was the Colorado Avalanche. I just kind of started watching Avs games and he comes back and I’ve got my little hockey stick and everything — I guess he never heard the end of that one. He’s gone for four months and he comes back and life has kind of changed (for hockey). I lived all over — Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

“This final two months of the season is going to be a hard schedule (as we try to make the playoffs). The playoffs last year were awesome. Everything, even as stupid as it was, we bleached our hair. Even just little things like that. The atmosphere around it and being around the guys for that last little stretch and playing with that urgency was so much fun.

“I’m graduated from high school, but I’m taking Russian on the side to get ready for college. I’m going to minor in Russian. I’m majoring in international relations — like international security. Hopefully, I’ll get a job with the CIA, Homeland Security, Air Force intelligence, something like that. If hockey doesn’t work out, you got to have a backup plan.”

Coloradan Troy Terry Commits To DU

Angelo Ricci Tweeted today that Troy Terry [5'7 130 lbs] has committed to play for the University of Denver. Terry has spent the past several years playing for the Colorado Thunderbirds.

“Troy is a tremendously skilled and extremely intelligent hockey player.  He is a young man that has not even come close to reaching his potential as a player.  DU is getting a very special young man with a tremendous upside,” stated DU alum and Thunderbirds Director Angelo Ricci.

His PeeWee coach for the Thunderbirds, Kenton Murphy assessed Terry's ability for the Red Line Report several years ago. He heaped praise on his star forward.

“He’s got unbelievable vision and game sense,” Murphy said. “His hands are magical. I coached [current New Jersey Devils star] Zach Parise when he was a Pee Wee, and he reminds me a lot of Zach Parise. He’s so talented.”

Defeneseman Nick Neville Commits To DU

(above) Nick Neville will play for DU next season
From: NAHL.com
by Corey Hersch

The Texas Tornado announced that defenseman Nick Neville [6'0 177 lbs-Bloomfield Hills, MI] has made a commitment to play hockey at the University of Denver. Neville will suit up for the Pioneers next season.

"I had been talking to a few pretty good schools throughout the season," Neville said. "But when I found out the Denver was interested, and knowing about their history, I really felt that was the right place for me."

Neville in his second season with the Tornado in 2012-2013 and was named to the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in both of his NAHL seasons. He picked up two assists and a +3 rating in three games at Top Prospects last season.

"Nick came to us out of Little Caesars as a solid player with a lot of raw skills and developed into one of the top defenseman in our league," Tornado head coach and general manager Tony Curtale said. "We're extremely happy and excited for him as he takes the next step at a prestigious program like the University of Denver."

Neville had a successful rookie campaign last year, totalling 5 goals and 24 assists in 59 regular season games. This year, he's continued to stay active at both ends of the ice, with 5 goals and 18 assists in 45 games so far. His assist and point totals are both ranked in the Top 10 of NAHL defenseman, while his 5 goals are tied for 19th among league blueliners.

"I came here not knowing much about juniors or college hockey. As a man, I'd say I've grown a lot having to live on my own for the first time. But with the help of Tony, I've definitely become more of a complete player. When I first came here, I was kind of a sheltered player, someone who didn't really think outside the box. The more I played, the more Tony seemed to trust me. And as I saw that trust, my confidence grew."

"I talked to a few of their coaches and Tony's known one of their asssistants for a really long time. It felt like a good fit, and taking all that into account made the decision to commit to Denver that much easier."

Youngest Carle Brother Commits To Merrimack

(above) Alex Carle & Gus with DU alums Matt & David Carle
Defenseman Alex Carle, the youngest of the three Carle brothers from Anchorage, committed to Merrimack College last week.

Carle, 18, is the captain at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. He'll begin at Merrimack of Hockey East in 2014. Likely he'll play a season in the USHL before college.

Matt Carle, the oldest brother, was one of the best players ever to play at the University of Denver winning two national championships and the Hobey Baker Award.  Matt currently plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Second brother David Carle retired from hockey just before arriving at DU after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart that can trigger cardiac arrest during strenuous activity. He coached at DU for four years as a student assistant coach.  Today, David is an assistant coach with the USHL Green Bay Gamblers.

DU Recruits Shine In USHL/NHL Prospects Game

(above) DU recruit Garrett Gamez assisted on the game winning goal in the USHL/NHL Prospects Game last night
Two of DU's most promising forward recruits, Garrett Gamez and Trevor Moore, participated in the 2013 USHL/NHL Prospects Game last night in Muskegon, Michigan.  Gamez & Moore helped Team West to a 2-1 victory over Team East.

Gamaz assisted on the game winning goal.

Jason Cotton gave the West a 2-0 lead 1:53 into the second when he took a no-look pass from Tri-City teammate Gamez in the high slot and ripped a shot into the top left corner past East starting goalie Charlie Lindgren of the Sioux Falls Stampede.

"We had a good forecheck going on that goal, and I got a great pass from Gammer," said Cotton, who is bound for Northeastern University in the fall of 2014.

Many scouts and collegiate representatives were on hand to witness the second annual Top Prospects Game.

NHL's Central Scouting Mid-Term Draft Rankings

(above) The 2013 NHL Draft will held in New Jersey
The NHL's Central Scouting released their 2013 Mid-Term Rankings of draft prospects and several players with DU ties made the list. Of course making the list and even being ranked fairly highly is no guarantee of getting drafted next summer.  Last year former DU player Dakota Mermis was ranked #77 and DU forward Quentin Shore was #107 and neither player was selected six months later.

Players can use the second half of the season to propel themselves up the list as Paul Stastny did in 2005.

DU recruit Trevor Moore [5'10 175 lbs.] is ranked #108. With 15 goals and 23 assists in just 35 games, he is having a sensational season with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL.  Look for Moore to move up in the final rankings, but obviously his size may be a factor against going in the first few rounds.

Next on the list with DU ties is defenseman Will Butcher [5' 10 191 lbs.] at #170.  At one point, Butcher was listed on several NHL Mock Drafts as a late first round selection last year.  Even though he's having a very nice season with the USNDP Under 18 team [34 games, 6 goals, 13 assists].

Finally at #186 is Quentin Shore.  Shore has been on fire in the first five games of 2013 and should move up the list.  If he can keep it up for the remainder of the season, he may be drafted.

Some will be surprised that DU recruit Gage Ausmus [6'1 210 lbs.] was not listed.  His size is within NHL specs but a lack of goals this season, probably hurt his ranking.

In 2011, the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds [major juniors] selected Kamloops, British Columbia-native Ryan Gropp [6'2 180 lbs] with the sixth overall pick in the draft. Gropp, a talented left wing, is now 16 years old. His father played hockey at Colorado College in the mid-Eighties and he is expected to be an NHL Draftee in 2015.

Gropp, while continuing to leave his options open, has expressed an interest in pursuing the NCAA hockey route and his current actions fuels speculation that he'll pass on the WHL. He has been rumored to be looking at Colorado College, Denver and Wisconsin among others.

Carlos Sosa, a practicing attorney in the state of Washington and co-founder of Turning Point Sports Management with former NHL player Darcy Tucker, has worked with players at every level of major hockey, ranging from the NHL to the CHL to the NCAA.

"Ryan Gropp is an exceptional hockey player," said Sosa, the former Thunderbirds radio color commentator. "Everybody in the business knew that [Gropp's] family was very educated and really believed in university education. On top of that, the father played university hockey. Given those facts, it was probably reasonable to expect that Ryan would choose the NCAA route."

The Thunderbirds ended up liking Gropp so much that they decided that drafting him with their first-round pick was worth the risk -- a risk that's taken with every single choice in the Bantam Draft.

Right wing Connor Honey, at the time a 17-year-old hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, had attended Thunderbirds training camp prior to the 2011-12 season. After the camp ended, Honey chose to keep his NCAA options open, deciding that he would play a couple of seasons in the United States Hockey League [USHL] before he would be eligible to suit up for the University of Denver, where he'd offered a verbal commitment.

Midway through the season, Honey stating that he'd like to play for the Thunderbirds, thereby sacrificing his NCAA eligibility.

In this world, a verbal commitment is nothing because it can be discarded by both sides.

Honey, who had been playing for the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers under former DU assistanct coach Derek Lalonde, was obligated to follow through on his spoken commitment to Denver, which he had made when he was 16. As is the case with top notch football and basketball players who offer a verbal pledge to one school and sign with another, seeing a teenager change his mind really shouldn't come as a surprise.

Fitting somewhere in between Gropp and Honey is Bonney Lake, Washington native Dylan Gambrell. Having gone undrafted in the WHL's Bantam Draft, Gambrell turned some heads at Thunderbirds camp last month as a 16-year-old.

Since Gambrell has committed to the University of Denver, many have been curious about the likelihood that Gambrell instead chooses to play for the Thunderbirds. Turning Point Sports Management acts as Gambrell's advisory committee, offering advice to both the player and his family to help them make the best decision's for the player's future.

"Dylan is a special case. I've known him since he was 7 years old. I've coached him and I've coached with his father. He's an exceptional player that has really developed in the last two years into an extraordinary player," Sosa said.

Having gone undrafted, Seattle chose to add Gambrell to their protected list, indicating an interest by the team in closely watching his development.

"He has options and he's going to keep those options open. Him and his family are going to make a decision at the time and place of their choosing as to which options they're going to accept," Sosa said. "They've made a verbal commitment to Denver and their intent at this point is to honor that commitment. But again, anything can happen. All options are open."

The circumstances surrounding Gropp, Honey, and Gambrell are all unique in their own ways and point to the constant competition between CHL teams and American universities to attract top-level hockey talent.

For those players whose development situations may take longer, Sosa believes the NCAA may be a better choice, but still says it's ultimately a personal preference and the choice of the player.

"If your choice is purely 'I want to get an education,' then go to college. Just realize that if you're not one of the top end guys, you're not going to get there very quickly. It may even get to the point where you can't start college until you're 19, where most non-hockey college students are starting at 18."

Each option remains a great path that may eventually lead to hockey stardom. However, with such even competition, both sides are constantly trying to gain the upper hand and things can get ugly.

In the cases of Gropp, Honey, & Gambrell, each comes from a different background and has different influences.

Often universities & major junior teams can have a good idea about where a player is headed, but until it's in writing, and even sometimes after, nothing is set in stone.

Trevor Tierney: Not A Fan Of Verbal Commitments

(above) Trevor Tierney is not a fan of "verbal commitments"
"I stay out of the recruiting. This is why I walked away from a secure and lucrative career in coaching. I could not stand the whole idea of recruiting and how it was done, especially with the early verbal commitments that were being made."

-DU Volunteer Assistant Coach, Trevor Tierney

University of Denver volunteer assistant lacrosse coach Trevor Tierney has an opinionated website centered around his lifetime playing and coaching lacrosse. This week he delved into college recruiting and the controversial "Verbal Commitment."

Whether you are a fan of college lacrosse, hockey, basketball or football or some other sport; recruiting is the lifeblood of any program.

DU Recruiting Update: Adding Mid-Season Depth

(above) Landon Smith could of provided some much needed depth at forward this season, but NCAA scholarship limits, mean that he'll arrive at DU over the summer
A few people online have asked why DU doesn't grab a forward from the list below and enroll the player in school over Christmas Break. The short answer, "It isn't that easy."

The first problem is that most, if not all of the forwards on the list, are still in high school.  Its possible that Landon Smith [5'10 181 lbs] may have already graduated from high school since he turned 19 years-old as of Oct. 18th.

But that brings us to the bigger issue.  Every major hockey program playing D-1 ice hockey is limited to just 18 scholarships. Its possible to cut scholies into smaller amounts such as quarter, halves or three-quarters, but the total may never exceed 18.  With three goalies on the roster, DU likely has less wiggleroom than usual.  And its likely that three goalies on scholarship explains why DU is so thin at forward in the first place.

Could DU use a player like Landon Smith this season?  No doubt, but with DU Tuition and Housing running around $15,000 per quarter and likely no scholarships available this year, it makes a roster move extremely unlikely.

DU Recruit Gage Ausmus Sees His Stock Soar

(above) DU Recruit Gage Ausmus is going to be an imposing force on DU's blueline next season
From: USA Hockey
by Becky Olsen

U.S. National Under-18 Team defenseman Gage Ausmus can hardly recognize the player he was one year ago.

With one year of National Team Development Program experience, the East Grand Forks, Minn., native said he feels more confident and that the details of his game — such as stick handling and positioning — have greatly improved.

“Over the summer, I watched NHL on the Fly, and watched the pros to see what they did right and what they did wrong,” he said. “I got in the weight room, worked on stick handling and shot pucks.”

He specifically spent time watching Brooks Orpik, a 2010 U.S. Olympian and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman who Ausmus tries to model his game after.

“He plays a solid game back at the blue line and doesn’t let anyone get anything easy off,” Ausmus said. “He plays a tough game, and I like that.”

Ausmus added some muscle this off-season in an attempt to toughen up. He came into the U.S. National Under-17 Team last year weighing just 196 pounds. He came back this year at 6-1 and 211 pounds.

“It’s definitely easier to box guys out and play with a more physical presence,” Ausmus said. “It’s easier all around being a bigger guy on the ice.

“I think in the penalty kill area [it has helped too]. The positioning and stick positioning — it makes the game a lot easier to block shots and get the puck out of the zone. Plus it gives me more confidence in my game.”

Ausmus also had another highlight this fall — playing for Rob McClanahan, who won a gold medal for coach Herb Brooks at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, at the 2012 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo.

“It was a great experience for me,” Ausmus said.

“We played in the very nice rink in Buffalo and it was fun time being there. People thought we might take it easy playing against our own players, but that’s not what happened. It was fun and very competitive; I had a great time."

“It was fun playing for Coach McClanahan and talking to him. He said to stick with it — there will be hard times but keep on moving.”

Moving forward is something Ausmus continues to do. Winning the Four Nations Tournament, which was held in early November at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, was an experience he will never forget.

“Last year, our first international tournament was in Russia and everyone was booing us,” he recalled. “Now we got to play here and everyone was rooting for us. It was a great feeling knowing the fans are on your side and every time you score, the fans are cheering.

“The best thing I remember is standing on the blue line and hearing your national anthem in front of your fans. It’s a great feeling.”

That’s a feeling he gets in and every time he puts on the USA jersey.

“The first time I put it on last year, it was the greatest feeling in the world,” he said. “Every time I put it on, it is the same feeling over and over again. It never gets old.”

A new feeling will arrive next year when Ausmus puts on his college jersey for the University of Denver.

“The education was a big thing for me,” he said of DU. “I really liked their campus. When I first saw it, I thought it was amazing. They have a great hockey program; it’s second to none. All those things combined — it made my choice easy in the end.”

For now, Ausmus is focused on one thing: continuing to become a complete player.

“My goal for myself is to keep building confidence and to keep playing steady,” he said. “Obviously, for the team, we want win the majority of the USHL games and try to get some college wins. At the end of the year, win that big event [the world championship].”

And nothing would be sweeter for Ausmus than the icing on the cake.
