NHL Central Scouting released their preliminary rankings of players in each top junior league in both North America and Europe, eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft. Three University of Denver recruits were mentioned in the USHL's Top 25; #15 Trevor Moore, #20 Will Butcher & #21 Garrett Gamez.

DU recruit Garrett Gamez was profiled in StormHockey.com. Gamez [5'11 180 lbs. Chino Hills, CA] fulfilled his lifelong dream when he committed to play college hockey at the University of Denver.
“When I was eight years old I actually went to a tournament in Denver, and I just always loved it there. After nationals this year I visited New Hampshire, Northeastern, Colorado College and Denver. After I went to Denver, my mind was made up. It’s where I wanted to go since I was a little kid, and I was so blessed to get a full scholarship. That meant a ton to me and my family.”

University of Denver hockey alum Scott McConnell, who is the head coach of the USHL Chicago Steel, announced that the Steel have acquired DU recruit Landon Smith [5'10 181 lbs. Greenwood Village, CO] from the Cedar Rapids Roughriders. The move should net Smith more ice time and scoring opportunities.

The USHL Chicago Steel announced that DU Alum Scott McConnell has been officially named Head Coach and General Manager of the hockey team. McConnell joined the Steel in October of 2010 and served as Assistant Coach before being named the interim Head Coach and General Manager of the club on February 24th, 2011.

"We are extremely happy with our decision. We took our time making the right choice for the team and organization, and we look forward to the future," said Chicago Steel President Mike Greenberg. "Scott has the approach and mentality that we are looking for. He is going to build our team to be offensive and very tough to play against."
Besides being involved with the USHL, McConnell has experience on the international stage as he took a short break from the Steel this past winter and served in the role of video coach for the U.S. National Junior Team that won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York.
Next season will be McConnell's sixth behind the bench in the USHL. He spent three seasons on the coaching staff of the Indiana Ice (2005-08) and helped lead them to a first-place finish in the East Division during the 2007-08 season. The native of Colorado Springs, Colorado then joined the staff of the Des Moines Buccaneers for the 2008-09 season.
Additional coaching experience for the 32-year-old included being the video coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, during the 2009-10 season. He has also had coaching stints with Billings in the NAHL and Bay City in the Western States Hockey League.
McConnell had a four-year collegiate career at the University of Denver (2000-04) and was part of the squad that captured the 2004 NCAA Championship.
The Chicago Steel coach has deep roots in the game of hockey as he is the grandson of legendary coach "Badger Bob" Johnson who led the University of Wisconsin to three national titles (1973, 1977, and 1981) and guided the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first Stanley Cup in 1991.

(above) DU alum Scott McConnell is back coaching in the USHLDU Alum Peter Mannino has been bouncing between the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) this season due to the "Ondrej Pavalec Situation." Yesterday the Thrashers recalled Mannino from the Wolves and reassigned goaltender Pavelec to the Wolves for a conditioning stint. Mannino, 26, was recently with the Thrashers for a six game stretch (Oct. 12 to Oct. 23) and competed against the Tampa Bay Lightning (Oct. 22), finishing with 15 saves. He gave up one goal in 38 minutes of action.

Three DU recruits gave been named to play in the World Junior A Challange in November in British Columbia. Forward Garrett Allen and defenseman Scott Mayfield both made the Team USA roster. Defenseman Joey Laleggia made the Canada West Team for the same tourney.

Gabe Gauthier has been signed by the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. He was brought in to provide offense for the Crunch. Gauthier, 26, didn't even have a hockey job until a couple of weeks ago. He was a free agent with nothing cooking until Victoria called. He was home in Denver, stocking shelves at Costco for $11 an hour. It was a memorable night for DU Alum Tyler Bozak in his first NHL exhibition game for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bozak, shorthanded, turned a 1-on-2 rush into a breakaway. The University of Denver graduate split NHL defensemen Dennis Wideman and Matt Hunwick, flipped the puck past Hunwick, picked it up the other side, and deked goalie Dany Sabourin for a 1-0 lead.Speaking of Bozak, if you have the NHL Network, tonight's Toronto Maple Leafs exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers will be on at 5 PM MST.

DU Alum Scott McConnell has been named the AHL Wilkes-Barre Penguins video coach. The grandson of former Pittsburgh Penguins & Wisconsin Badgers coach Bob Johnson, McConnell played hockey at the University of Denver and was a member of the 2004 National Championship team. His former teammates Connor James & Adam Berkhoel played for Wilkes-Barre last season. Wilkes-Barre is the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Former DU Captain J.P. Testwuide will play for the AHL Houston Aeros this season if all goes well. Testwuide, 24, posted 13 points (3-10=13) and 110 PIM during last season at the University of Denver. He then signed with the Aeros, scoring two points (1-1=2) and adding 14 PIM in 13 playoff games.The Aeros are the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.

From: USHL WebsiteThe Des Moines Buccaneers announced today the hiring of Jean-Paul (J.P.) Parise as their new head coach and general manager and DU Alumnus Scott McConnell as associate head coach. McConnell has been the assistant coach of the Indiana Ice for the past two seasons.
Parise is the father of Zach and Jordan Parise. Both are former standouts at the University of North Dakota and are a part of the New Jersey Devils organization.
McConnell was a four year player at the University of Denver and a member of the 2004 NCAA Championship team. As an assistant coach with the Indiana Ice in the USHL, McConnell helped lead the Ice to the 2007 USHL Final Four and was named to the coaching staff of the 2008 USHL All-Star Game.

McConnell will join Guest Coach Pat Funk behind the bench for the East Division at the annual classic slated this year for Tuesday, January 29th from the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI.
McConnell will be making his first appearance at the mid-season classic and is one half of the Ice’s coaching tandem that is responsible for the team’s best start in franchise history where the team is 22-6-3 at the midway point of the year.

DU's Newest Recruit Finding Form In USHL
From: Indiana Ice WebsiteINDIANAPOLIS – The USHL East Division-leading Indiana Ice (15-4-0) improved their home record to a perfect 10-0-0 with a 5-1 victory over the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets on Wednesday evening from Pepsi Coliseum.
The Ice received major contributions from several young forwards as DU Recruit Stepan Novotny, Will MacDonald and Brian Harrison all shined in the victory. Novotny, originally from Prague, Czech Republic, has just joined the team after beginning the season with Shattuck St. Mary's Boarding School in Fairbault, MN.
The Ice jumped out on Ohio early getting a goal from newcomer Stepan Novotny at 7:33 into the first period. Greg Squires and Matt Smith were credited with the assists. Indy raised the lead to 2-0 at 14:36 of the period on a goal from Will MacDonald with assists going to Nick Bailen and Brian Harrison.
“It took me several games to get used to the speed and talent of this league,” said Novotny. “My linemates tonight (Greg Squires and Brian Harrison) made it easy for me.”
The second period was a similar song as the first as Novotny poured in another goal at 8:11 of the frame with another helper dished out by Squires. The Ice increased their lead to 4-0 as MacDonald tipped in his second of the night at 1:34 remaining in the second with an assist credited to Patrick Cullen.
“Our line came out shining tonight,” said Squires. “Harry (Harrison) was hungry, played hard and finished his checks. Stepan found plenty of open ice and was able to bury a couple of goals.”
The Ice is now 11-1-0 in their last 12 games and look to continue their home dominance from Pepsi Coliseum when they host the Chicago Steel this Friday (12/7) at 7 p.m. Former DU player Scott McConnell is an assistant coach for the Ice.
DU Recruit Jumps From High School To USHL
DU's most recent recruit, Stephan Novotny, recently joined the Indiana Ice of the USHL after spending the first semester at Shattuck St. Mary's boarding school in Fairbault, Minnesota. Novotny scored 29 points in 22 games at St. Mary's.It has been reported that Novotny will be enrolling at DU next season, so perhaps this move is designed to get him experience to ease the transition to college hockey. Novotny is a potential NHL prospect and will be eligible for the 2009 NHL Draft.

Playoffs Wind Down But DU Still Has Connections

As the playoffs wrap up in all the leagues, DU still has a few connections that can win championships.

This weekend the USHL will wrap up its season with its final four teams battling for the Clark Cup Trophy. DU recruit John Lee will try to bring home the hardware with his Waterloo Black Hawks hosting the tournament.

Meanwhile on the other side of the USHL bracket, DU Alum Scott McConnell is the assistant head coach of the Indiana Ice.

Up in Canada, DU recruit Jon Cook is battling for the Royal Bank Tournament which is the Junior A national championship. Cook scored his first goal of the round robin phase of the tournament on a power play, but his Camrose Kodiaks lost the game 7-4. The Semi Finals begin tonight and Camrose is the #2 seed.

Over in Russia, the USA lost a heartbreaker to Finland 5-4 in a game that went to the Shootout. DU Alum Paul Stastny did not score in the game and the US was eliminated in the Quarter Finals.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, San Jose blew game 4 against Detroit with just a few seconds left and the Red Wings won the series in 6 games. Matt Carle did not score in the the second half of the series.

In honor of the Nodak series this weekend we stumbled across this story about former DU player Max Bull. Bull only recorded 16 goals in his DU career, but his deflected shot against UND in the Regional Final in Colorado Springs directly led to the 2004 National Championship.
