Colorado College Is ALWAYS The Bridesmaid

You Heard It Here First: DU SWEEPS COLORADO COLLEGE THIS WEEKEND .... Fifty-Seven .... Go DU

As DU gets ready to get ready to carve up Colorado College like a turkey this weekend, we at LetsGoDU have many things to be thankful for (such as the 7-1-0 start by the hockey team). So in the spirit of the Thanksgiving season lets take a glance down Interstate 25 at our little sister, Colorado College.

Sure its easy to go to the games and chant "Fifty-Seven," "CC Sucks," "Where's your Banners?," "Who's your Daddy?" & my personal favorite, "Denver Rejects." But do we ever stop to think where these bile filled chants actually come from?

Lets face it, we've been kicking CC's ass for well over 60 years now (157-111-15), but during this holiday season lets take time to think about the hundreds of DU hockey players and coaches that have made it all possible. Sure there are many current & former CC hockey players who have choked away games, blown leads in the playoffs, whiffed on open nets and let in mind boggling easy goals, but we want to accentuate the positive.

So as you enjoy your holiday feast next week, give a little thanks for all our wonderful current and former players that have made all this possible.

DU Alum Named #25 Top MN High School Player

Bob Young's High School Biography

University of Denver Alum Bob Young played for the Minnesota State Champion Hill High School hockey team in 1970. Bob along with three of his fellow defensive teammates would eventually play D-1 hockey. Three of the boys, including Young, would go on to be drafted by NHL teams.

Young scored the game winning goal in overtime in the championship game of the Minnesota Independant Schools Tournament as a Junior. In 1970 he was named as St. Paul's "Athlete of the Year."

Recently Bob Young was named the 25th best high school hockey player in Minnesota history in a list of the Top 100 players.

DU Alumni Event In Tampa Tonight

The University of Denver Alumni Development Office is continuing its barnstorming tour across the United States. Tonight they are in Tampa, Florida and one of the guests is a representative of the 2012 Tampa Frozen Four Committee. As a goodwill gesture they brought along a souvenir puck.

DU's 50/50 Raffles Raised Almost $7000

The University of Denver Hockey Alumni Association raised $6,997 this season selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets at Magness Arena. The program began on January 21st against UAA. In an ironic twist of fate, $1,000 was donated to the Colorado College hockey program (WTF?).

Two former Denver hockey players and one former CC player won the 50/50 raffle this season. Don Cameron ’67 won $929 on February 19th and Paul Koch ’95 won $617 on March 4th. Both generously donated a portion of their winnings back to the Denver Hockey Alumni Association.

John Kessler who played at Colorado College from 1968 to 1971, won $1000, the largest jackpot of the year. He donated his prize to the Colorado College hockey program. Scott Owens was reportedly going to use part of the money for a new perm.

DUHAA co-chair Rod Summers expects to raise $20,000 from the 50/50 raffle next season. The hockey alumni are funding a portion of the 2011 Hockey Banquet and will be announcing some much needed purchases for the hockey program very soon. Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets or donated their time selling tickets.

DU Road Trip To Minnesota This Weekend

On Feb. 11-12th, 2011 the University of Denver hockey team will play the University of Minnesota in Mariucci Arena. The Denver Hockey Alumni Association is hosting a reunion of former players with events planned all weekend.

On Saturday a lunch will be hosted by Coach Gwozdecky for the hockey alumni, parents and DU fans. (RSVP & prepayment required).

Saturday is also Hockey Day in Minnesota 2011 with a series of games from pee wees to the pros planned across the state. The highlights include outdoor games in John Lee's hometown of Moorhead and DU vs. the Gophers that evening.

Once again a group of DU hockey fans will make the roadtrip to support the team and spread our own version of good cheer.

Just like last year's trip to Wisconsin, Boone and several DU students will fly to Minnesota to meet with alumni and support the team.

Murray Armstrong Memorial Services

The Denver Hockey Alumni Association will hold an informal memorial service for legendary Hockey Coach Murray Armstrong in Minneapolis, MN on Saturday February 12, 2011@ 1:30 pm following lunch at the Radisson University Hotel. The University of Denver will host a memorial service “Hail to the Chief” on Saturday February 19, 2011 at 5:00 pm. The service will held at 5:00 PM in the Multi-purpose room (3rd floor) at the Ritchie Center on the University of Denver campus. Following the service their will be a reception in the Champions Room in the Magness Arena, prior to the game. The puck drops at 7:00 pm for the DU verses Michigan Tech game. Former players and spouses will be provided with tickets.

DU's Hockey Alumni Raffle Was Huge Success

The DU Hockey Alumni Association's 50-50 Raffle sold $2,000 worth of tickets on Saturday night at Magness Arena. That is the maximum amount of tickets they are allowed to sell in one night under Colorado law. One lucky fan won $1,000.

The DUHAA would like to thank everyone who participated on Saturday night. The student section was rocking with their White-Out T-Shirts, the band was great, Magness was as loud as its ever been with a sold-out raucous crowd and Jesse Martin stole the show with another great speech.

The DU Hockey Alumni Association will use the proceeds of the Raffles to assist the DU Hockey Program.

DU Hockey Alumni 50-50 Raffle Off To Brisk Start

The DU Hockey Alumni Association's 50-50 Raffle was held for the first time this weekend. On Friday night they sold $1083 worth of tickets. On Saturday night they sold $1426 worth of tickets.

The DUHAA would like to thank everyone who participated. Like LetsGoDU and the Boone Movement, the DU Hockey Raffle is a great way for fans to participate on a grass roots level.

The DU Hockey Alumni Association will use the proceeds to assist the DU Hockey Program.

The next Raffle will be against Colorado College on Saturday, Feb 5th.

Rocky Mountain Pond Hockey Championships

Hanging out in Vail and playing Pond Hockey all day with your buddies. Sound like fun. The event will kick off in a couple of weeks with youth and adult tournaments.

Several DU hockey alums have formed teams.

Located in the heart of Colorado, the Vail Valley - The Rocky Mountain Pond Hockey Championships (RMPHC) is a celebration of hockey in the truest sense, and your participation makes this celebration unique among all other hockey tournaments. By participating you will be a part of a select group of hockey players, players that play for the love of the game.

The RMPHC is being presented as an event to bring together players and teams from across the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. Every hockey player that ever laced up a pair of skates and went out onto the "pond" knows that feeling when the blade cuts into the ice and a cool breeze hits your face. The years may have past, but that feeling is still there, just waiting to be awakened with the first stride across a clear sheet of outdoor ice. The games will be like old times on the pond, with a fire lit on the side to keep warm and a warming house just waiting for the post game chatter.

You also will have the satisfaction in knowing that the success of your team and the success of this event will benefit local youth hockey programs in our area. It is called " giving back to the game" and your support will help many children learn to love the game of hockey the way you have all these years.

So be ready to lace up the skates, put on the extra t-shirt under that old jersey, and be ready to be a part of the Rocky Mountain Pond Hockey Championships.

DU Hockey Alumni Plan Trip To Minnesota

The University of Denver Hockey Alumni Association is planning a trip to Minnesota this winter to watch the Pioneers take on the Golden Gophers on February 11-12, 2011 in Minneapolis. The weekend also coincides with "Hockey Day in Minnesota 2011."

Many DU Hockey Alums reside in Minnesota, so it will be a great opportunity for everyone to cut loose in the Twin Cities.

The Infamous "Banner"

Denver, Colorado - October 26th, 1984 - DU was in the middle of a 4-0 throttling of Colorado College when the game was delayed for over 30 minutes. The raw chickens had already come raining down on the ice after DU's first goal of the game from the student section, but this was something bigger. Several SAE Fraternity members had crawled up in the catwalks and released a giant 15 foot banner (above).

The game was delayed while the DU Maintenance Staff got to work on removing the banner. The picture above was published in the 1984-85 DU Yearbook and through the miracle of the internet, LetsGoDU brings you the details.
