FINAL: UAA 3 - DENVER 2 OT
On Saturday afternoon the University of Denver fell to Alaska-Anchorage 3-2 in overtime.
UAA's Matt Bailey scored on a 2-on-1 at 3:45 into overtime to hand the Pioneers their second straight overtime loss. Denver lost by the same score to Goal Rush host Alaska Nanooks in Friday’s late game.
The Seawolves fell behind 2-1 early in the third period when Denver’s Joey LaLeggia let a rocket go from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat UAA goaltender Michael Matyas and stuck in the top of the net.
But the Seawolves responded with the tying goal.
Hubbs fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that was stopped by Pioneer goalie Evan Cowley, but he left a rebound. Scott Allen was in perfect position to tap the puck in at 11:40 of the third period.
After two Pioneers fell down in the neutral zone, UAA's Zack Rassell broke into the offensive zone and fired a shot that snuck though Cowley’s five hole.
The Pioneers struck back midway through the third. On the rush, Nolan Zajac found David Makowksi wide open in the slot, and Makowski’s shot beat Matyas on the glove side.
The win marks the second time that the Seawolves have beaten a ranked opponent this year. They opened the season with a win against then No. 10 Quinnipaic in UAA’s Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage last weekend.

DU's elite blueliners recorded the first three goals of the game with Joey LaLeggia, Will Butcher and David Makowski scoring goals.
Daniel Doremus added his second goal in two nights.
DU was 3 for 9 on the power play.

DU jumped out to an early lead, scored three power play goals and once again received another stellar effort from the Juho Olkinuora in the nets.
DU received goals from Ty Loney, Shawn Ostrow, Nick Shore and Quentin Shore scored twice. David Makowski & Chris Knowlton had two assists each.
Scott Mayfield recieved a game misconduct for roughing & grabbing the facemask and was ejected with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Since he did not receive a game disqualification, he will be back in the lineup tomorrow night.
Dakota Mermis Defection Raises Red Flags

On Tuesday evening the OHL London Knights announced the signing of University of Denver Freshman Dakota Mermis. Clearly this was a move designed to get Dakota's hockey career back on track towards someday achieving a roster spot in the NHL.
Before Dakota ever committed to the University of Denver, he was considered to be one of the best young hockey players in North America. His St. Louis Junior Blues team won the 2007 USA AAA Championship when he was just 12 years-old.
At age 16, he was selected to play for the prestigious US National Development team in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was considered to be one of the top seven defensemen in the USA and his hockey future appeared bright.
Playing for the US National Development team poses issues. If you aren't on the top two forward or defensive pairings are you better off instead playing a leading role on the USHL team? Its a problem at every level of youth sports. As you progress up the ladder, the competition for playing time gets stiffer and to maintain playing time you may have to play a different role than your body or skill set is ideally suited for.
It happened to former DU star Gabe Gauthier; he could score goals in bunches on the top two lines in the AHL, but didn't have the body mass to adapt to playing physical role on a third or fourth line in the NHL.
So the decision was made for Dakota to jump from the USNDP Under-18 Team and play the following season in the USHL for the Green Bay Gamblers. Former DU coach Derek Lalonde was soon thereafter named the head coach of the Gamblers and if anyone was going to give Dakota a ton of playing time, "Olde DU Derek" could be counted upon.
By all accounts Dakota had a great season in Green Bay. He recorded 5 goals and 22 assists and the Gamblers won the USHL Championship. But compare his stats to NHLer Matt Carle, who blazed a similar career path as Dakota's. Carle recorded 12 goals and 30 assists in his lone season in the USHL for River City.
Dakota's numbers and progress after his season in Green Bay were not sufficient enough for an NHL team draft the 5'11 blueliner. At this point, Dakota had three choices. Play another season in the USHL and put up some big numbers, jump to London in the OHL or attend DU.
He chose to come to Denver and compete for playing time with some of the best young Dmen in D1 hockey. David Makowski [5 goals, 7 assists], Joey LaLeggia [7 goals, 10 assists], Nolan Zajac [3 goals, 9 assists], Scott Mayfield [2 goals, 5 assists], Paul Phillips [0 goals, 5 assists] & Josiah Didier [0 goals, 3 assists]. Dakota's stats [1 goal, 3 assists] obviously put him down the pecking order.
Dakota's numbers and size clearly weren't going to entice an NHL team to draft him this summer, so he made the decision to bolt to the OHL London Knights. He'll get more playing time, more games and power play opportunities in the OHL.
After next season he'll likely begin his career in the ECHL and compete for playing time against players that are better then his former teammates at DU. His odds of making the NHL? Based on current US born blueliners in the NHL under 6 feet tall, a thousand to one.

A DU hockey fan and his daughter were at Colorado Children's Hospital yesterday when several members of the University of Denver hockey team, staff and coaches rolled into the ward.

Things were going so well for Denver University this season until they invited a pair of teams from New England to town this past weekend. The Pioneers were 9-0-1 and the No. 2 team in the country heading into action against Yale and New Hampshire. But once things were over with on Saturday night, they’d lost 2-1 in overtime to the Bulldogs and blew a 4-1 second period lead to UNH before losing 6-4.
On their overtime loss to Yale, coach George Gwozdecky told Mike Chambers of The Denver Post, “Fortunately, we saw this coming. It was not a good week of practice. … Some of the plays we couldn’t make, whether it was the 5-on-3 power play or the other four power plays. It was awful. No other way to put it. If I had been sitting anywhere else, I would have been booing.”
And that was after their first loss of the season. If there’s a potential cure for Denver it comes in the form of this weekend’s visitors from the University of Wisconsin as the Badgers are just 1-7-2 to start the year and swept last weekend by Minnesota State.
While Denver will surely slip when polls come out later today, the question here for Gwozdecky’s team is if this is just a hiccup or a sign of problems on the way. With talent like Nick Shore (Los Angeles), Joey LaLeggia (Edmonton), Chris Knowlton, and David Makowski there’s plenty of balance in their attack.
The Pioneers’ loss to New Hampshire was almost single-handedly because of junior Kevin Goumas. While he assisted on the first two of teammate Grayson Downing’s three goals, he helped ice Denver scoring a natural hat trick of his own in the five point effort.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post had some comments on the officiating and a phantom call on Joey LaLeggia. Jeoy Leggs is quietly becoming one of the best defensemen in college hockey.

DU 5 - Michigan Tech 1 FINAL
Its almost becoming routine. The 2012-13 University of Denver hockey team starts off slowly and builds momentum until the score is out of reach. Friday night was no different as the Pioneers defeated Michigan Tech 5-1 at Magness Arena. It was the third straight game the Pioneers tallied five goals.
Five different players scored for DU; Dakota Mermis, David Makowski, Quentin Shore, Joey LaLeggia & Nick Shore.
Once again Great Brittain was a rock between the pipes.

University of Denver junior hockey player David Makowski was miserable. He couldn't play hockey. He could barely attend class, much less study or take an exam. He suffered nonstop headaches, and the very medication he was taking for treatment may have been the root of the problem [read entire article].

DU's ongoing injury problems include a new name. Mike Chambers Blog sheds some light on David Makowski, who won't play this weekend, Adam Murray, who may play this weekend & Sam Brittain who is starting to skate.
Chambers has details of University of Denver hockey players Juho Olklinuora and Matt Tabrum's unusual Christmas vacation. The players spent the holiday at the home of Air Force head coach Frank Serratore and his family. The blog posting is a great read.

With Jason Zucker up in Canada and John Ryder, Beau Bennett, Sam Brittain and Adam Murray on the shelf with long-term injuries, the Denver Pioneers defeated the #10 ranked Union Dutchmen 3-1 on Friday night.
Denver scored on their first two power play shots in the game and the Union starting goaltender was lifted after giving up two goals on four shots. Drew Shore & Joey LaLeggia started things off with power-play goals in the first eight minutes of play. David Makowski assisted on both goals.
DU's makeshift lineup played very well defensively, which was a point of emphasis after Christmas Break. Shawn Ostrow notched DU's final goal.
The Pioneers will face Air Force, who defeated Colorado College 2-1 on Friday night. It was the first win ever for the Falcons over CC in World Arena.

The third-ranked University of Denver hockey team traveled across the country to face #1 Boston College on Friday night. In front of a packed house and a national television audience, the Pioneers displayed moxie and came away with a hard fought 4-2 victory.
The Pioneers took the lead on Jason Zucker's early goal in the first period. Beau Bennett, Drew Shore and David Makowski had DU's other three goals.
Eagles head coach Jerry York commended the Boston College fans for the raucous atmosphere inside the Conte Forum.
"The atmosphere was as loud and as [good of a] college hockey atmospheres that we've had here in a long time," York said in his postgame press conference. "It was a terrific place to play."
Adam Murray had an outstanding game in goal.
