University of Denver junior Nick Shore signed a three-year entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings over the weekend. Shore, 20, was selected by the Kings in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Shore joins Jussi Olkinuora and Scott Mayfield as DU players who have left school early to sign professional contracts this Spring.

University of Denver sophomore goalie Juho Olkinuora was named an AHCA/CCM All-American on Friday.
Olkinuora enjoyed a breakout season as he posted a record of 13-6-5 while boasting a 2.35 GAA and a .927 save percentage.

The University of Denver is raising tuition 3.95 percent next year & freezing faculty salaries after an unexpected budget shortfall. DU is blaming lower-than-expected enrollment at the undergraduate level and in four graduate programs, but speculation is mismanagement in a variety of areas is causing the budget crunch. The New York Islanders announced today that University of Denver defenseman Scott Mayfield has agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level deal.
Mayfield will join the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League on an Amateur Tryout Contract.
Mayfield, 20, scored 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) and recorded 114 penalty minutes with a plus-8 rating this season at DU.
The Islanders selected Mayfield in the second round (34th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.

So that's all I'm going to say about the officiating."The University of Minnesota defeated Denver 5-1 on Saturday night in Mariucci Arena. Scott Mayfield scored a power play goal within the first two minutes of the game to get the Pioneers off to a great start.
DU appeared to be cruising towards a victory over the Gophers when Ty Loney tipped in a power play goal midway through the second period. But the goal was overturned after a replay review.
Tied 1-1 going into the third period, the wheels came off the bus.

DU jumped out to an early lead, scored three power play goals and once again received another stellar effort from the Juho Olkinuora in the nets.
DU received goals from Ty Loney, Shawn Ostrow, Nick Shore and Quentin Shore scored twice. David Makowski & Chris Knowlton had two assists each.
Scott Mayfield recieved a game misconduct for roughing & grabbing the facemask and was ejected with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Since he did not receive a game disqualification, he will be back in the lineup tomorrow night.
Dakota Mermis Defection Raises Red Flags

On Tuesday evening the OHL London Knights announced the signing of University of Denver Freshman Dakota Mermis. Clearly this was a move designed to get Dakota's hockey career back on track towards someday achieving a roster spot in the NHL.
Before Dakota ever committed to the University of Denver, he was considered to be one of the best young hockey players in North America. His St. Louis Junior Blues team won the 2007 USA AAA Championship when he was just 12 years-old.
At age 16, he was selected to play for the prestigious US National Development team in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was considered to be one of the top seven defensemen in the USA and his hockey future appeared bright.
Playing for the US National Development team poses issues. If you aren't on the top two forward or defensive pairings are you better off instead playing a leading role on the USHL team? Its a problem at every level of youth sports. As you progress up the ladder, the competition for playing time gets stiffer and to maintain playing time you may have to play a different role than your body or skill set is ideally suited for.
It happened to former DU star Gabe Gauthier; he could score goals in bunches on the top two lines in the AHL, but didn't have the body mass to adapt to playing physical role on a third or fourth line in the NHL.
So the decision was made for Dakota to jump from the USNDP Under-18 Team and play the following season in the USHL for the Green Bay Gamblers. Former DU coach Derek Lalonde was soon thereafter named the head coach of the Gamblers and if anyone was going to give Dakota a ton of playing time, "Olde DU Derek" could be counted upon.
By all accounts Dakota had a great season in Green Bay. He recorded 5 goals and 22 assists and the Gamblers won the USHL Championship. But compare his stats to NHLer Matt Carle, who blazed a similar career path as Dakota's. Carle recorded 12 goals and 30 assists in his lone season in the USHL for River City.
Dakota's numbers and progress after his season in Green Bay were not sufficient enough for an NHL team draft the 5'11 blueliner. At this point, Dakota had three choices. Play another season in the USHL and put up some big numbers, jump to London in the OHL or attend DU.
He chose to come to Denver and compete for playing time with some of the best young Dmen in D1 hockey. David Makowski [5 goals, 7 assists], Joey LaLeggia [7 goals, 10 assists], Nolan Zajac [3 goals, 9 assists], Scott Mayfield [2 goals, 5 assists], Paul Phillips [0 goals, 5 assists] & Josiah Didier [0 goals, 3 assists]. Dakota's stats [1 goal, 3 assists] obviously put him down the pecking order.
Dakota's numbers and size clearly weren't going to entice an NHL team to draft him this summer, so he made the decision to bolt to the OHL London Knights. He'll get more playing time, more games and power play opportunities in the OHL.
After next season he'll likely begin his career in the ECHL and compete for playing time against players that are better then his former teammates at DU. His odds of making the NHL? Based on current US born blueliners in the NHL under 6 feet tall, a thousand to one.

The University of Denver and North Dakota played to a 2-2 tie on Friday night in Grand Forks. Though DU never trailed, North Dakota carried much of the play in the last half of the game.
Late heroics by Jussi Olkinuora, including an incredible soccer style diving save, kept DU from losing the game.
Chris Knowlton & Scott Mayfield scored for the Pioneers.

The Good News: With the victory the Pioneers clinched third place in the WCHA.
The Bad News: They fell a spot in the Pairwise to 13th.

University of Denver defenseman Scott Mayfield, who contributed two assists, four hits and two blocked shots to help the Pioneers to a two-game home-ice sweep over league-leading and Minnesota last weekend, has been named Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week.
A 6-4, 200-pound freshman from St. Louis, Mo., and a draftee of the NHL's New York Islanders, Mayfield assisted on teammate Jason Zucker's game-winning power-play goal at 4:02 of the third period last Friday evening at Magness Arena as Denver collected a 5-3 victory over the Golden Gophers.
On Saturday night, Mayfield earned an assist on Nick Shore's third period tally that evened the game at 3-3 and catapulted DU on to a 4-3 overtime win. He quarterbacked Denver to a 3-for-10 effort on the power-play over the weekend and also fired four shots on goal.
As a rookie, Mayfield has seen action in 29 of the Pioneers' 30 games this season with eight points (2g, 6a).
