Forward-turned-defenseman Patrick Mullen just completed an outstanding career at the University of Denver, where he helped guide the Pioneers to a WCHA Final Five Championship and another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
This week, Patrick Mullen is in Washington DC participating in the Frozen Four Skills Challenge, which took place on Friday night at the Verizon Center. He shared his insights on a variety of topics including his career at DU, signing with the Los Angeles Kings, and even chimed in on the Boone debate.
Q: What has it been like for you to be here?
PM: It’s been fun. It’s kind of like being in the NHL Skills Competition. Being in the NHL one day is something that we all want to do, and to kind of act like them and see what they’ve done in the past is pretty fun.
Q: How was the overall experience of being here in Washington been for you personally?
PM: Oh, it’s been great. The games so far have been great too. So it’s been a lot of fun for sure.
Q: How has the equipment been? Because I know that Bauer provided both Skills teams all of their equipment.
PM: Well the skates are a little stiff (Laughs), but everything else has been top-notch and it’s all the best products.
Q: I’d like to go back and talk a little about your career at DU. You had a great season this year and with this being your final year, what has been like to play that last year at DU?
PM: I really enjoyed my whole career in Denver. I got another year of great memories. We had another great team that did pretty well this year. It’s was too bad that we got knocked out by Miami in the regional, but they’re obviously a great team because they’re in the National Championship game. But aside from that, it’s been a great year and great experience.
Q: What are some of the memories that you’ll take from DU?
PM: Well I’ll definitely take the memory of winning the WCHA Championship and having had the chance to play with some guys who are now in the NHL like Staz (Peter Statsny), Matt Carle, Chris Butler, Peter Mannino and all of those guys. It’s was great playing with those guys, so that’s what I would take.
Q: How many oranges and how many lemons did you win in your four years?
PM: I got the lemons twice in my freshman year, and I want to say that I got the orange about seven times. I think Rhett Rakhshani had gotten something like 15 this year, so it’s just ridiculous.
Q: What do you think about the whole Boone debate?
PM: Well, to be honest with you I never really got involved in it. Peter Mannino kind of brought that back pretty strong. He’s crazy about it. He’s got it on his helmet playing with the Islanders. But I think it’s pretty cool that they got the mascot thing going. I saw him (Boone) last night and it was pretty cool to see and he looks good. Whatever they plan to do with the red hawk or whatever it is, is fine with me. I think it’s pretty weak. So it’s good to see that they’re trying to bring him back.
Q: Would you personally like to see Boone brought back?
PM: Sure, I think anything’s better than what we have as a logo right now.
Q: When you first came to DU, you started out as a forward and later moved to defense. How has your role and your game grown and developed since the switch?
PM: I think it’s a totally different mindset. Instead trying to be the guy (goal-scorer), you’re trying to be the one trying to stop the guy. So it’s definitely different. I do still try to be offensive by jumping into the play. And with my skating ability, I think the transition was easier. I can skate backwards pretty well, so it wasn’t that bad. Overall it’s been a good learning experience. If I end up moving back to forward in the future, then I’ll become a better defensive forward.
Q: Do you have a preference of one over the other of which position you’d rather play?
PM: Well I played this year as a defenseman, so I’ll say defenseman.
Q: I know that you recently signed with the Los Angeles Kings. I have to admit that I was a little surprised to see you here because you had been signed, so how did you manage to do that?
PM: Well, if I had actually gone to play for the Kings (after signing) then I wouldn’t have been able to graduate. So with that and the fact that (Tyler) Scofield from Bemidji being here with his team in the Frozen Four, they invited me. I was pretty excited when the Kings signed me and now I kind of know what I’ll be doing next year.
Q: Will you be heading to Manchester after you’re done here?
PM: No. I’ll most likely be heading there at the start of next season. I’ve got a lot to learn about playing defense and getting to know the guys too. So as a right-handed offensive defenseman, I think it’s going to be a good learning experience in Manchester next year.
Q: How hard were the Kings pursuing you and did you know that they were interested in signing you?
PM: Yes. I had spoken with a few of their scouts throughout this year and they’ve kept in touch with me. So I kind of had an idea that they were going after to me. So I think they’ll be a good fit for my development.
Q: Finally, what would you like to best remembered for as Denver Pioneer?
PM: I helped the team to win all the time and did everything I could to help the team, like switching to defense. That was a pretty big move for me, career-wise. So I think I want to be remembered as a guy that tried to do whatever he could for the team.

Patrick Mullen Signs Contract With LA Kings

The Los Angeles Kings have signed University of Denver Senior defenseman Patrick Mullen to a two-year entry-level contract, Kings GM Dean Lombardi announced Friday.
“Patrick made significant contributions to our team as a defenseman this season,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “He’s really evolved as a defenseman and the sky is the limit for his ability at the professional level. We wish him all the best during his pro hockey career.” [read entire article]
DU's Seniors Ready For Last Series In Magness
Special To LetsGoDU
By Pat Rooney
They hope their final season at the University of Denver does not end for about another month, most preferably with victory party at the end of the Frozen Four in Washington, D.C.
Nevertheless, one way or another it is the beginning of the end of the season, and this weekend the Pioneers’ three seniors will say farewell to Magness Arena.
The trio—forward Julian Marcuzzi, defenseman Patrick Mullen, and defenseman/team captain J.P. Testwuide—arrived at DU directly in the wake of the Pioneers’ back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005.
They have collected 88 wins and counting going into this weekend’s series against Alaska Anchorage in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. As freshmen, they played with current Colorado Avalanche standout Paul Stastny and Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Carle. As juniors, they helped DU win its 15th Broadmoor Trophy as the WCHA tournament champions and also helped lead the Pioneers into the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2005 title run.
On the eve of their final appearance at Magness, the Pioneers’ three seniors discussed the highlights of their DU careers.
J.P. Testwuide - The Pioneers’ captain spent much of his first two seasons shuttling between forward and defense before finding a home on the blue line. Testwuide has registered career-bests in goals (three), assists (10), and points this season.
“Whenever you sweep at home, it’s always pretty special,” Testwuide said. “The guys come into the locker room and we sing the fight song, and I think it’s those kinds of moments that bring a team together. It’s pretty emotional. I think any sweep at home is the greatest memory.”
Patrick Mullen - Like Testwuide, Mullen spent much of his career at forward, averaging about 18.7 points during his first three seasons before moving to defense full-time this season. A skilled passer, Mullen is tied for second on the team with 19 assists and needs only one point to establish a new career-high.
“I remember the first game I ever played with all those guys that are in the NHL now,” Mullen said. “You always want to win the championship every year. We’re going to do our best to get back there.”
Julian Marcuzzi - Marcuzzi has dutifully played his role and has never complained as his playing time dwindled. Marcuzzi appeared in a career-most 23 games as a freshman and has been in the lineup 11 times this season.
“Regardless of the playing time, it’s special to be a part of the Denver hockey tradition,” Marcuzzi said.
“That stems from being around everyone in the dressing room, from the coaching staff to all the players and the alumni involved. It’s a great, great experience. It’s going to be the last home series, so it will be nice to get a couple wins and go out on a good note. That’s pretty important to us.”

DU 3 - St. Cloud 1

The University of Denver hockey team stuck to the recent formula. Fall behind early, coolly build momentum and pull out the win with a big Third Period. Kyle Ostrow scored two goals and Patrick Mullen notched another for a 3-1 victory against St. Cloud.
Rhett Rakhshani sustained a lower body injury in the 1st period and is questionable for Saturday's game. He was seen putting ice on his ribs or hip region in the 2nd period.
Although Denver is now two points clear of North Dakota in the WCHA standings, DU only has two games left in the season while UND has four games remaining.
All eyes will be on the Colorado College-North Dakota game tomorrow afternoon (2:35 MST) in Grand Forks. A CC victory would allow DU to control their own destiny in the race for the MacNaughton Cup race.
Second Star: Patrick Mullen (Denver)
Third Star: Marc Cheverie (Denver)

Chambers' Blog: Mullen "Likely" To Be Suspended

The league and the University of Denver have discussed the situation since Monday, and the matter was supposed to be resolved Wednesday. An official statement from the WCHA is expected on Thursday, said WCHA Director of Officials Greg Shepherd.
WCHA Recommends "Sanction" For Mullen

From: Duluth News Tribune
by Kevin Pateskpates
University of Denver defenseman Patrick Mullen may be suspended for a game or more for using his stick to hit the arm of Minnesota Duluth freshman winger Mike Connolly in the final seconds of last Saturday’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association men’s game at the DECC.
Mullen’s fate was being decided by WCHA and Denver officials Tuesday, supervisor of officials Greg Shepherd said from St. Paul. The Denver senior, the son of NHL Hall of Famer Joe Mullen, is expected to receive the ruling today.
Connolly, from Calgary, Alberta, had pushed the puck toward an empty Denver net with two seconds to play in a 4-2 UMD victory. He then fell to the ice and Mullen wound up and hit Connolly’s arm with his stick, which earned Mullen a five-minute slashing major penalty and a 10-minute game misconduct from referees Brad Shepherd and C.J. Beaurline at the game’s conclusion.
On Sunday, the referees asked Greg Shepherd (Brad’s father) and WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod to look at the incident on video tape. The league has since recommended a sanction to Denver, regarding Mullen, and is waiting to hear if the school has accepted the punishment, Greg Shepherd said.
If Denver doesn’t agree with the punishment, the school can appeal the decision to a WCHA executive committee.
No. 6-ranked Denver (17-9-3), a WCHA co-leader, has a game Friday at Colorado College.

St. Cloud Times Looks At Patrick Mullen
If the best defense is a good offense, that's probably why Patrick Mullen will be standing at the blue line this weekend for the Denver Pioneers.
Mullen is tied for the national scoring lead among defensemen, which is perfect considering he says he is and always will be a forward at heart.
"We've been scoring a lot of goals so, hey, someone's got to get the assists," said Mullen, a senior who has 12 helpers entering tonight's game against St. Cloud State at the National Hockey Center. "I'm getting more relaxed back there, but I still tell our coaches 'Hey, remember why you recruited me?' '' [read rest of article]

Brookwell To Return To Lineup Against Buckeyes
From: Denver Post
by Mike Chambers
DU junior defenseman Cody Brookwell has been reinstated to the team and is eligible to play in this weekend's homecoming series against the Buckeyes. The reason for his three-game suspension was not disclosed.
"I just had two long meetings with all people involved, and we have just decided that Cody has been reinstated," Gwozdecky said Monday before practice.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Brookwell is one of DU's top shutdown defensemen. He likely will replace freshman John Lee or sophomore John Ryder. Former walk-on Chris Nutini, a sophomore, has become a key penalty killer, and senior Patrick Mullen, freshman Patrick Wiercioch and senior J.P. Testwuide are locked into the lineup.

DU Takes Wisconsin To The Woodshed
DU coach George Gwozdecky said his young team isn't as fun to coach as it for fans to watch. - Denver PostDU sweeps Wisconsin for the first time at Magness since 2003. DU won the game Saturday night 7-4 with everybody getting into the act. DU broke open a 3-3 tie in the second period with goals by Rhett Rakhshani and The Goal Czar.
- DU has scored 18 goals in three games, including 10 goals in the 3rd period.
- Joe Colborne was +2 for the game and had his first collegiate assist. He just missed a goal in the third period and played his best game by far.
- Chris Nutini was +4 for the game. Surely a DU career best game for Nutini. Another defenseman, Patrick Mullen, leads all blueliners with 6 points this season, all assists.
- Tyler Bozak had two goals to pad his team scoring lead with 8 points, while Luke Salazar had a goal and now has 5 points in three games. The Goal Czar is making a run for WCHA Rookie of the Year. Its just amazing.
Mullen Out For First Game Of Playoffs

by Mike Chambers
Also see Mike Chambers Blog for more details on this story
University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky has suspended junior defenseman Patrick Mullen for the Pioneers' playoff opener Friday for receiving a 10-minute misconduct in each of last weekend's games against Colorado College.
Mullen will miss Game 1 of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against Minnesota-Duluth at Magness Arena.
"Let's call it actions detrimental to the team," Gwozdecky said Wednesday. "This will be important, for not only Patrick, but for his teammates. Coming down the home stretch as we are, every game will be competitive and close, and they'll be challenges. And we have to really maintain our focus and our cool."
