DU Adds Matt Thomas To Hockey Coaching Staff

Matt Thomas
The University of Denver will add Matt Thomas to the coaching staff in August as the volunteer assistant coach for the 2011-12 hockey season.  Matty is the older brother of former DU hockey captain Andrew Thomas ('08).

Matt was a four year player at the Naval Academy (2001-'05) and co-captain his Senior season. For the past two seasons Matty was an assistant coach for the Navy hockey program while he was stationed in Washington DC at the Navy's Military Sealift Command.  Prior to that he spent four years serving his country attaining the rank of Lieutenant stationed on the USS Monterey and the USS Elrod in the Persian Gulf.

Matty's father Larry was a long-time WCHA referee and younger brother Andy currently plays professionally for the AHL Albany Devils. Andy was a member of the 2005 University of Denver National Championship team.

News & Notes From Around Pioneer Nation

Former DU Captain Andy Thomas is back in the AHL with the Albany Devils. For the past 10 games he been on the roster after a successful stint in the ECHL with Trenton.
----------
Joe Colborne has been playing well for the AHL Toronto Marlies after being traded by the Boston Bruins. The Toronto Star called Colborne a fabulous talent in a recent article.
----------
The University of Denver lacrosse lost to Syracuse 13-7 over the weekend in the Carrier Dome. Incoming DU lacrosse recruit Sean Cannizzaro, who is from Syracuse, is actually a very good high school hockey player (17g, 30a). If Coach Gwozdecky ever needs an emergency forward in the future he may need to call Coach Tierney for a loaner.
----------
DU recruit Joey Laleggia finished off the regular season in the BCHL as the league's 5th leading scorer and top scoring defenseman. He scored 20 goals and 62 assists in 58 games.

Former DU hockey coach Murray Armstrong's health has been deteriorating in recent months. He has suffered a series of strokes. The family has asked for privacy from well-wishers, as his wife Freda is not in the best of health. Armstrong is considered to be one of the greatest coaches in the history of college hockey, winning five National Championships at DU from 1958-1969. Murray also played in the NHL from 1937-1946.

Congrats to the University of Denver women's basketball team which defeated No. 23 Vanderbilt 70-65 at Magness Arena on Sunday, the Pioneers' first win ever over a ranked team. The Pioneers (4-4) defeated Colorado earlier in the season and got a taste of ranked competition in a 73-51 loss to then-No. 17 Georgia on Nov. 26, but this was a true marquee moment for Johnson and his squad.

Former DU Captain Andy Thomas was promoted to the AHL Albany Devils from the ECHL.
----------
The University of Denver has four hockey recruits in the pipeline from the AAA Colorado Thunderbirds. One of those recruits, Daniel Doremus, is slated to come to DU in 2012. Doremus has five goals and two assists in his last six games from the USHL Sioux Falls Stampede. He leads the team in +/- and has moved up to seventh on the teams scoring table with 7 goals and 3 assists in 17 games.

News & Notes From Around Pioneer Nation

(above) Kevin Ulanski

DU Alum Kevin Ulanski will be the centerpiece for the CHL Colorado Eagles this season. Ulanski returns to a team that has won two Championships, sold out almost every one of its games in Ft. Collins and split its opening series (OTL & Win) with the defending champion Texas Brahma's this weekend. Ulanski had two assists to open the season.

NHL Report: Matt Carle has 1 goal and 7 assists in just six games for the Philadelphia Flyers. Paul Stastny has 1 goal and 5 assists for the first place Colorado Avalanche & Tyler Bozak has one assist in one game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are winless this season.

Former DU Captain Andy Thomas will open the season with the ECHL Trenton Devils. Thomas played in his first professional season last year splitting his time between the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL and the Iowa Chops of the AHL. With the Condors Andy played in 24 games and has 14 assists. With the Iowa Chops Andy played in 25 games and had 4 assists on the year. While at DU, Thomas had 6 goals and 20 assists over the course of 159 college career games.

Former DU goaltender Glenn Fisher is no longer in the Edmonton Oilers organization. A few days ago, Fisher signed with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the East Coast Hockey League.

News & Notes From Around Pioneer Nation

DU Alum Tom May is featured in a great article in NHL.com. Tom had his team record 10 game goal scoring streak halted this week, but he's recorded a point in 11 straight games.

If you're a member of Facebook.com join the "LetsGoDU Blog" group.

DU Sports Information Director Erich Bacher has some interesting observations on the team's trip to Madison this week. With DU's first line of Rakhshani - Ruegsegger - Gifford clicking so well, you have to wonder how potent DU would be if/when Tyler Bozak gets back? Suddenly DU is four lines deep and 5 goals games could become the norm.

DU Alum Andy Thomas is back in Bakersfield playing for the Condors in the ECHL. Bakersfield hasn't lost since he's been back in the lineup after a stint in the AHL.

DU leads the WCHA with 7 Scholar Athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota have a total of two scholar athletes combined. Once again Tyler Ruegsegger leads the way for DU, joined by Marc Cheverie, Brian Gifford , Matt Glasser , Dustin Jackson, Chri Nutini, & Kyle Ostrow.

The Pioneer Mascot Fund has $4,300 in the bank and several more checks in the mail. We're still awaiting the second drawing/draft from the mascot costume company in Canada. If we get a reasonable quote, the deposit will be FedEx'd immediately. There will be an organizational mascot meeting next Saturday at 5 PM at Jordan's Restaurant/Pub on the corner of University & Evans at 5 PM. All are welcome. Then we'll bounce over to Magness Arena to watch DU take on St. Cloud State.

DU Alum Andy Thomas Called Up To AHL Today

Former DU Captain Andrew Thomas has been called up to the Iowa Chops of the AHL. Obviously this calls for a celebration and what song better summarizes the situation than the theme song from "The Jeffersons."

Thomas will join former Pioneers Ryan Dingle & Adrian Veideman on the team.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Andrew Thomas

(above) DU Alum Andrew Thomas is profiled in the Bakersfield Californian

From: Bakersfield Californian

I was the recipient of the WCHA scholar athlete award. Last year I was fortunate enough to win a partial scholarship for the post graduate school of my choosing for my academic accomplishments while I attended the University of Denver. My parents always stressed the importance of academics and I have been lucky enough to succeed on and off the ice.

My father refereed college hockey along with two NCAA National Championship games. My father was a goalie in a small college in Massachusetts and then went on to become a referee. When he was transferred to Wisconsin he did a great deal of his games in the WCHA and was invited to the NHL referee camp.

My brother is a lieutenant in the United States Navy. My brother, Matt, attended the United States Naval Academy, where he played Lacrosse and hockey and he is now on the last leg of his service. He is stationed in Norfolk, Va., and is currently headed back from a six-month deployment.

I am a soccer fanatic. I follow European soccer very closely, especially my two favorite teams Celtic Football Club and Manchester United. Next to the winter Olympics my favorite event to watch on TV is the World Cup even though I have never been a good soccer player. I appreciate the athleticism the players have and the massive following some of the teams have.

I have won championships every place I have played since youth hockey. On the three junior teams I played on through high school I won league or playoff championships and most recently while at Denver I won a National Championship, one regular season championship, and two playoff championships.

Pioneers In The Pros: News & Notes

(above) Brett Skinner [almost] made the opening day roster of the New York Islanders

Brett Skinner, a two time National Champion at DU, finally made it to the NHL. He's on the opening day roster of the New York Islanders.
Edit: Skinner was the last player sent down to Bridgeport (AHL) today, after the Islanders picked up a player on waivers.

The Iowa Chops assigned defenseman Andrew Thomas to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. Thomas (6-2, 202) is a rookie who was captain at the University of Denver as a senior last season.

Wade Dubielewicz played his first game in the Russian Super League the other night. We're still trying to get our translators to figure out the box score.

There is a nice article in the Union Leader about former DU player Gabe Gauthier. He'll be playing for the Manchester Monarchs in the AHL, but is just a phone call away from the LA Kings. Interesting situation for Gabe, he's a high scoring forward in the AHL and a grinder/high energy player in the NHL.

Odds & Ends From Around Pioneer Nation

2010 recruit Jason Zucker from Las Vegas scored two goals for the USNDT-Under 17 team in the second day of the NAHL Showcase. Zucker has three goals in two tournament games. Nick Shore from Denver (younger brother of 2009 DU recruit Drew Shore) chipped in with two assists. Nick Shore is a top notch recruit.

DU alum Peter Mannino saw his first action in the nets for the NY Islanders Rookie Team. The Isle's rookies beat the Bruins rookies yesterday 8-4. Mannino have up two goals and played half the game.

Former Pioneer Ryan Dingle scored the first goal of the game as the Ducks rookies beat the Sharks rookies 3-2. The goal was scored after recent DU alum Andy Thomas was able to control the puck into the corner of the offensive zone.
The Ducks would finally break a scoreless tie on a goal by left winger Ryan Dingle at the 18:40 mark of the first period, an unassisted goal while the two teams were playing at even strength.

“O’Dell had a great win off the draw and then Andy Thomas was able to get it deep in the corner,” said Dingle. “Fortunately, I was able to get to the puck first. I kind of wheeled around the net. The goalie was caught on the other side of the net, so I saw that right away and threw it right at him. It was a nice little break. It was a good offensive play from the get go.”

Thomas Signs Professional Contract With Iowa

(above) Former DU Captain Andy Thomas helped DU win the 2005 National Championship, two Broadmoor Trophies and a MacNaughton Cup

Former University of Denver captain Andrew Thomas has signed a one-year entry level minor league contract with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League. Thomas is expected to make his professional debut with the Iowa Chops of the American Hockey League this fall.

Thomas guided the Pioneers to their 15th WCHA playoff championship and return trip to the NCAA Tournament en route to a 26-14-1 mark last season. Thomas netted 26 points in 161 career games for the Pioneers and was a three-time All-WCHA Academic Team honoree. He finished his four-year DU career with 100 wins, one NCAA national championship (2005), two WCHA playoff titles, one WCHA regular-season crown and three Wells Fargo Denver Cup championships. Kevin Doell Signs Contract With Swedish Club

(above) DU alum Kevin Doell is heading to Sweden

From: Leksand Stars Website

DU alum Kevin Doell has signed a contract with the Leksand Stars of the Swedish Ice Hockey League. The Stars are currently playing in the second division in Sweden, but obviously with the signing of Doell, will be looking to move back to the first division by the end of next season.

Doell spent last season in the AHL, winning a Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves and playing 8 games in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Leksand's Mikael Lustrom said, "We are happy to sign a player of Doell's ability. He is a very good two way player who will help us tremendously."

Doell is the 4th DU alum to sign in Europe for next season. The other three are Ryan Caldwell in Germany, Wade Dubielewicz and Mark Rycroft in Russia.

Doell will be joing a team that is a phenomenon in Swedish sports. Its a tiny community (just 6,000 residents) with a big-time ice hockey following and remains one of the most popular clubs in Sweden.

Notes: Andy Thomas and Adam Berkhoel are two players with DU ties that have yet to sign a contracts with professional clubs. The Washington Capitals drafted Thomas in 2005 have until August 15th to sign him or he will become a free agent.

Eleven Pioneer student-athletes, including several hockey players, were honored at the University of Denver’s 83rd annual Pioneer Awards Ceremony held in the Governor’s Ballroom in the Driscoll Student Center on May 15.

The highlight of the annual awards ceremony is the naming of “The Pioneers” – individuals whose dedication to the University of Denver and its students is beyond measure. Ten students, one faculty and one staff member were selected as Pioneer Award recipients this year, including a trio of senior student-athletes. Volleyball’s Alyssa Hampton, hockey’s Peter Mannino and Nordic skier John Stene received Pioneer Awards this year.

Outstanding Student Awards
Students were nominated for these awards based on their contributions to academic excellence, the campus and university, and community involvement. Hockey player Zach Blom was named the Outstanding Senior. Matt Glasser and co-captain Tyler Ruegsegger were nominated for the Outstanding Sophomore awards.

Hockey senior captain Andrew Thomas received the Managerial Leadership Award from the Daniels College of Business.

Andy Thomas Awarded Post Grad Scholarship

From: DU Athletics Website

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today (May 9) announced that Andrew Thomas (Bow, N.H.) of the University of Denver has received one of the annual WCHA post-graduate scholarships for 2008-09.

An advocate of excellence both on and off the ice, the WCHA announced the annual post-graduate scholarship program in April of 2003, with the first recipients named after the 2003-04 school year. The scholarship grant is for $10,000 for post-graduate studies.

Thomas is set to graduate from DU in June with a Bachelor of Science degree in management. He was honored as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete this past season, is a three-time member of the All-WCHA Academic Team, carries a GPA of 3.81 in his management major, and has an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.37 (on a 4.0 scale). Thomas hopes to pursue a Masters of Science degree in business intelligence, which is a program unique only to Daniels Business School at DU and eventually accept a position at an upper level management consulting firm.

As team captain in 2007-08, Thomas saw action in all 41 of the Pioneers’ games, helping anchor their nationally-ranked (9th) scoring defense and leading Denver to an overall record of 26-14-1 (.646), a third-place finish in the WCHA regular season race, the Broadmoor Trophy as team champions of the 2008 Red Baron™ WCHA Final Five held at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., and to another berth in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey championship. He led the team with a +14 plus/minus rating.

“Andrew Thomas has made an outstanding contribution to the University of Denver Pioneer hockey program,” head coach George Gwozdecky. “During his four-year career, he became one of the best defensive defensemen in the WCHA and was constantly matched up against our opponents’ top offensive units. He played a vital role on our No. 1 penalty-killing unit and led our team in hits. His strength, courage, character, intelligence and personality made him not only one of our greatest team leaders but also one of the most respected student-athletes on our campus.”

Over his 161-game collegiate career at Denver, Thomas was a defensive regular all four seasons, contributing 26 scoring points and playing on the Pioneers’ 2004-05 MacNaughton Cup (WCHA regular season), Broadmoor Trophy, and NCAA Men’s Frozen Four (national championship team. A 2005 fourth round draftee of the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals, he was also chosen to participate in the 2008 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge this past April 11 at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

“Andrew always set the example for his teammates with his mature and serious approach to his academics and to his hockey training,” added Gwozdecky. “Throughout his four years at the University, he volunteered his time to many community activities including the Starlight Starbright Foundation and the University of Denver Youth Hockey Association. He also represented the hockey program at numerous other volunteer activities throughout the region. He is one of the finest student-athletes and leaders to have ever worn the Pioneer hockey jersey.”

Thomas was nominated for the WCHA Post-Graduate Scholarship by Denver Faculty Athletics Representative Nancy Sampson. According to Sampson, Thomas demonstrated leadership by example on the ice, with his teammates off the ice, in the community and in class. “Those of us who have worked with Andy, whether in class, the community or with hockey know he will be a positive influence in whatever endeavors he chooses in the future,” said Sampson. “He is a young man with charisma, depth and integrity.”

Blueliner John Lee In USHL Championship Series

(above) DU recruit John Lee (#5) helped the Waterloo Black Hawks to an overtime victory last night in first game of the USHL Championship Series

With the elimination of Matt Carle's San Jose Sharks and Paul Stastny's Colorado Avalanche from the NHL playoffs, several players with DU connections still remain in playoff contention around North America. Ryan Dingle and Adrian Veideman are still playing for the AHL Portland Pirates, while DU recruits Joe Colborne and Shawn Ostrow are playing for the Canadian Junior A Championship and DU recruit John Lee helped the Waterloo Blackhawks to a 4-3 overtime victory against Omaha last night in the USHL Championship Series or Clark Cup as it is known.

For the third time in the USHL playoffs, the Black Hawks went to overtime, picking up a 4-3 win against the Omaha Lancers in Game One of the Clark Cup championship series Sunday. John Lee did not figure in any of the scoring, but did draw two penalties during the game.

Waterloo last won the Clark Cup in the 2003-2004 season with DU defenseman Andrew Thomas & JP Testwuide on the blueline for the Blackhawks. Joe Pavelski (Wisconsin and now San Jose Sharks ) skated on offense with them.

DJ Powers Interviews Andy Thomas For LetsGoDU

(above) After the Skills Competition at the Frozen Four, DU Captain Andy Thomas sat down with hockey journalist D.J. Powers to talk about hockey, DU and his future

Editors Note: D.J. Powers of Hockey's Future.com & Future Considerations.com writes articles about NHL prospects. In the past she's written exclusive articles for LetsGoDU about DU hockey alums at the Snoopy Old-Timers Tournament and interviewed former Pioneer Adrian Veideman. As the Frozen Four approached we asked her to write an article or two with a DU theme for us to publish in LetsGoDU. The first interview was with DU Captain Andy Thomas. Tomorrow we'll run her interview with Air Force star Eric Ehn.

Q & A with Andy Thomas
By: DJ Powers
Special to LetsGoDU

Defenseman Andy Thomas just completed an outstanding four-year career at the University of Denver, having served as team captain this past season. Thomas, a 2004 draft selection of the Washington Capitals, was became one of the Pioneers most reliable and durable defensemen. He appeared in 161 career games, posting 26 career points (six goals, 20 assists). Thomas’ 161 career games ties him for seventh all-time in the program’s history, while his 278 career penalty minutes ranks him eighth all-time. During the Skills Challenge last Friday at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Thomas won the Shooting Accuracy title, hitting 3 of 4 targets in the playoff round after going 4-for-8 in the opening round.

Following the Skills Challenge, Andy Thomas took time out for this interview.

Q: First of all, you were great out there tonight.

AT: Thank you

Q: So tell me about all those events that you were in, and how it all went for you tonight.

AT: I think Coach Gwozdecky wanted to put me into as many skills (events) as I could be in, just so I can keep improving myself, because I knew that I would screw up one or two of them if I didn’t do well. (Laughs) The hardest shot competition didn’t go great and obviously the breakaway relay didn’t either. It was a lot of fun and this is really great for Colorado.

Q: C’mon, Coach Gwozdecky was giving you some preferential treatment, right?

AT: (Laughs) Maybe, maybe, but I would never say that. That’s for sure.

Q: So how has the weekend been for you?

AT: Hectic. It’s been real busy. Obviously living here in Denver makes it a lot easier. It’s been pretty structured and pretty rigorous. I’ve been spending a lot of time here at the rink and have been watching some great hockey. I saw the crowds yesterday and two terrific hockey games, it was so great.

Q: Now, I’m going to ask you a real painful question

AT: Go ahead. I’ve probably been asked it before.

Q: How is it for you personally to be here at the Pepsi Center during the Frozen Four without your (DU) team among the four teams playing here this weekend?

AT: It’s tough. We had a lot of freshmen this year. We had 11-12 freshmen and it’s disappointing. At the end of the day and at the end of the season, there’s only one team really happy. Every team is kind of in the same situation. We won the (WCHA) playoff championship and the Broadmoor Trophy and can’t really beat that, especially with so many young guys. If you’d told me at the beginning of the year that we would’ve done this well, then I’d have told you that I’d definitely have been satisfied.

Q: Winning the WCHA Playoff Championship had to have felt pretty good, especially since everyone seemed to be predicting either North Dakota or CC winning it.

AT: Yeah, we were playing great hockey, but in the end [NCAA Tournament], we ran into a team (Wisconsin) that didn’t have much to lose. We played Wisconsin real tight, but gave up six goals. So we kind of beat ourselves that night. But we went into the WCHA tournament with a lot of confidence and we were successful there.

Q: So what happened against Wisconsin in the regional aside from the fact that you guys lost in their house?

AT: Yeah, that was tough. It adds a whole new element to it. But they play good hockey and great playoff hockey. They’re very well coached and have a good goalie, so it was tough.

Q: But that sounds just like what you guys have.

AT: Yeah, and that’s the funny thing. They play a much similar defensive style. They can get all the pucks to the net and they play real physical. They played with a lot of emotion and they had a lot of rest coming into that weekend.

Q: Having served as captain of the Pioneers this year and going through the many adversities that you guys went through, how were you able to handle it all and bring the guys together game in and game out?

AT: We just kept reminding each other and kept reminding all of the guys on the team that adversity happens, whether it’s injuries, sickness or personnel losses. We obviously faced some injuries and some personnel losses, but we battled through it. We have a lot of great, young guys that have a lot of energy who were very, very understanding, very attentive and really took what I, the other captains and coaches said to heart. Everyone says that I have a real hard job with 11-12 freshmen, but they made my job so easy because they were like clay to mold. Looking at the next three or four years, Denver hockey is going to be very, very good.

Q: Now that you’ve wrapped up your career at DU, what are you taking from it going forward?

AT: Well, I’m a Capitals draft pick, so we’ll see what happens in the next month or two here. The best part is that I’ll be getting my degree pretty soon. That’s exciting to have that chapter of my life coming to a close and we’ll see what happens. Obviously getting an education from Denver isn’t too bad.

Q: Speaking of the Capitals, have they been in touch with you since the (DU) season has ended?

AT: Yeah, there’s been a little bit of contact, but they’re real busy with the (NHL) playoffs and they’re going to be busy for the next however many weeks, which is great that they’re back in the playoffs and having more success. It’s a long summer and they have my rights until August 15, so it’s a big waiting game. I’m starting to realize that now. (Laughs)

Q: So is the wait really tough?

AT: It is because you want to know what your future is going to hold for you, and what’s going to come next. It’s so hard to wait, especially in terms of hockey and professional sports. But the nice thing is I know that I have my degree from Denver to fall back on.

Q: Something that I asked one of your former teammates, Adrian Veideman earlier that I’ve gotta ask you is in your career at DU, how many oranges and how many lemons did win? [Orange & Lemon YouTube Video]

AT: I counted them like three days ago, and I had two oranges and five lemons in my career.

Q: So when did you win your oranges?

AT: My sophomore and junior years. In this past year, I came real close once, but I’m alright with it. That helmet got pretty uncomfortable a couple of times. (Laughs)

Q: Finally, now that you’ll be leaving DU soon, what would you like to be best remembered for?

AT: The pride that I had playing for Denver and the fact that I truly cherished every second that I wore the jersey. I’m thankful because towards the end of this year, I really realized that it was coming to an end. I just want to be remembered as a person who was very appreciative of all the people that have influenced me. It’s tough and it always has to come to end, even though you don’t want it to. I just want to be remembered as a person who was passionate about, appreciative of, and really takes a lot of pride in Denver and Denver hockey.

Q: Do you feel that the team has become like a second family to you?

AT: Oh, absolutely. They took a chance on me when I was 18 and Coach Gwozdecky threw me right into the fire.

Q: In covering the DU old-timers at the Snoopy Tournament, one thing that I discovered was the team really is like one big family.

AT: Yeah, guys like Jim Wiste, Cliff Koroll, Ron Grahame and all the names. A lot of those people have had a big influence on me since my career started at Denver. And even former captains like Ryan Caldwell and Matt Laatsch I credit a lot to for taking me from where I’ve been to where I’ve gotten to now. So yeah, it really is a family here. If you’ve worn the jersey, you’d understand.

Q: So for you, it’s more like an extended family.

AT: Absolutely and they’re people who would do anything for you too.
