DU scored in the final two minutes of regulation after lifting goalie Sam Britan to knot the score at 1-1.  Joey LaLeggia tallied the lone Pioneer goal.

After suffering four 3-2 overtime losses to start the season, including two last weekend against Nebraska-Omaha, DU managed to "win" the game via a shootout.  Nationally & in regards to the Gold Pan, the game will count as a tie, but Denver picks up an extra point in the NCHC standings.

Denver Post: Gwozdecky's TV Career Sidetracked

From: Denver Post
by Terry Frei

Until last month, George Gwozdecky was planning to work as a college game television analyst for several networks during the 2013-14 hockey season. The former University of Denver coach had accepted that he wasn't going to land a high-profile head coaching job this year, and that television would be his sabbatical in the wake of his controversial April firing after 19 seasons with the Pioneers.

"I was thinking it would give me an opportunity to stay in the game, stay in the environment," Gwozdecky said recently over lunch in Denver. "That was the plan — to see what jobs opened up in the spring."

Then Jon Cooper, who took over as the head coach of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning on March 24, asked Gwozdecky if he was interested in talking about joining the Lightning as an assistant [read entire article].

DU's Mascot Survey Ends In Failure

From: Denver Post
Re: Caitlin Swieca

After a months-long controversy surrounding the University of Denver's mascot, the DU Pioneers community has spoken and said it would prefer to have no mascot at all.

The news came as DU's Mascot Steering Committee announced the findings of its research on Friday and recommended that none of the considered mascots move forward as they are currently designed.

A survey containing three mascot options— an elk, a jackalope and a mountaineer — was sent to DU students and alumni in July, asking them to evaluate the concepts against 20 attributes of the DU community.

More than 8,000 community members participated in the survey, more than three times the expected response. The release by the committee said that nearly 70 percent of respondents were either receptive or neutral to moving forward with a new mascot, but were not aligned on what that mascot should be.
.
The mountain explorer and elk options performed the best, but neither gained a consensus.

The controversy began in March, when chancellor Robert Coombe announced that Denver Boone, the school's official mascot until 1998, would not be considered by the committee. In a letter to students and alumni, Coombe said that Boone "did not reflect the growing diversity of the DU community."

The concepts were created after the committee conducted over 45 focus groups, 15 open forums and a number of one-on-one interviews with alumni, students and faculty. The mascot committee had 76 members — more than the Colorado state Senate, state House or the final Broncos roster.

DU has not had an official mascot since the 2007-08 season.

Looks like DU's move to the Big East conference came just in the nick of time.  Today Johns Hopkins will announce they are moving to the Big Ten conference in lacrosse.  The departure of DU, Ohio State & Michigan this year and Loyola and Notre Dame in recent years decimated the ECAC.

After eight years, 1.5 million visits, 5755 posts, 32,596 reader comments and countless laughs; LetsGoDU is ceasing operations today.  LetsGoDU averaged 30 visits a day in 2005 to almost a thousand visits per day in recent years and its been a wonderful journey.  We launched a mascot, built school spirit to unprecedented heights, covered many epic victories and more than a few heartbreaking DU losses.  To those who supported DU through this Blog [du78 & many others] and helped PioNation fight the good fight, we say thank you.  To the many DU students who shared our vision and supported school spirit and Boone, you helped change the culture at the University of Denver for the better.  Like Boone, LetsGoDU is leaving on top.

Denver Post Profiles Montgomery & Roy Connection

Colorado's two newest hockey coaches were briefly teammates, but friends ever since.
.
Jim Montgomery made his debut with his hometown Montreal Canadiens in 1995, after being addressed in front of the team by star goaltender Patrick Roy, who by then had led the Canadiens to two Stanley Cups

" 'Go show everyone what's inside your heart tonight,' he told me, right in front of everyone," Montgomery said. "For the superstar of the Montreal Canadiens to say that to me, it was very motivating and something I will never forget."

Montgomery, 43, was hired by the University of Denver last month and Roy, 47, by the Avalanche last week [read entire article].

CU AD Gets Canned For Fundraising Failures

Mike Bohn axed at CU
A very interesting article in the Denver Post today on the University of Colorado Athletic Director getting fired this week. These are unbelievably challenging times for collegiate athletic departments.

In March, Chancellor Coombe cut the DU Athletic Department budget by $500,000 for next fiscal year. He also froze faculty salaries and raised tuition by 3.8% for 2013-14 as well. No doubt the Gwozdecky firing, the golf coach resignation and reported budget problems on the ski team were related. More painful cuts are sure to come.

This week DU extended Bill Tierney's contract, joined the Big East in lacrosse and priority number one is to expand seating capacity at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

The point of this is that the facilities arms race, wild television contracts, huge coaches contracts and conference affiation roulette will call for elite fund raisers to run the athletic departments and universities of tomorrow.
"One day after Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano had his say about why the university abruptly decided to let its athletic director go, Mike Bohn took his chance for rebuttal.

Tops on the list? Fundraising not matching expectations.

"The insinuation that we don't have a (fundraising) plan is offensive at best," Bohn said. "Our Sustainable Excellence Initiative is one we've been working on for three years. And we've been working hard on what works. How do we work within the footprint we have?" [read entire article].
