Seth Appert has long considered the head hockey coaching position at the University of Denver a “dream job.” Same could be said about the same position at Ferris State, Appert’s alma mater, it should be added.

Appert, though, interviewed for the open job at Denver earlier this week.

DU Alum Leaving RPI To Return To Denver

(left) Shawn Kurulak played at DU from 1996-99

From: Troy Record
by Ed Weaver

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s hockey family has lost a key member, as assistant coach Shawn Kurulak has resigned.

The former University of Denver defenseman and assistant coach is returning to the Denver area to spend more time with his family.

While that clichéd phrase is often a catch-all excuse to cover the true reason(s) a coach or player leaves a program, it’s totally accurate for Kurulak.

“It’s strictly a family decision,” he said on Wednesday. “I need to be with them more than I have been. I love this place and it’s been a great three years of my life but this is just something I need to do for my family.”

“Our profession keeps us away from home a lot,” RPI head coach and former DU assistant coach Seth Appert said. “Shawn wants to put his young family first.

“We will miss him,” Appert said of Kurulak. “He’s done a very good job here and I appreciate everything he’s done for RPI hockey.”

Appert said RPI players will miss Kurulak a great deal.

“He had a good balance of being tough on them and still being their buddy,” he said.

“Obviously, it was very difficult to tell the guys,” he said. “It was very emotional.”

Rensselaer has not officially announced Kurulak’s resignation and Appert said there are dozens of applicants for the vacated position.

“We wanted to tell all our upperclassmen, all our incoming freshman and all our recruits personally before it was on the internet,” Appert said.

And coaching changes, even among assistants, can often cause players currently being recruited to feel uneasy.

Kurulak and fellow assistant Jim Montgomery played big parts in RPI’s recruitment of players in all four current classes.

Kurulak’s immediate plans include hockey only at the youth level in the Denver area.

“I don’t want to say I’m out of (college) hockey for good,” he said. “I just need to do something else right now.”

A four-year letterwinner on the blueline for the Pioneers, Kurulak wore the alternate captain's "A" for three seasons. A three-time WCHA All-Academic selection, he helped the team to the league championship as a senior. In 131 career games, he had 41 points (7 goals, 34 assists) and 268 penalty minutes. He also represented the WCHA on an all-star team that traveled to Switzerland for an international tournament in 1998.

Vines a former defenseman for the University of Denver served as a volunteer assistant coach for the RedHawk staff for the 2008-09 season. Vines will replace another former Pioneer, Shawn Kurulak who resigned as an RPI assistant coach in order to move back to Denver and pursue business interests not related to hockey.

Former DU star Tyler Bozak will have to battle Christian Hanson and Andre Deveaux for fourth line duties on the Toronto Maple Leafs this preseason.

Phillips Nets Game Winning Goal Against Swiss

(left) DU recruit Paul Phillips netted the biggest goal of his career on Saturday for Team USA

From: USA Hockey.com

DU 2009 recruit Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) tallied the game-winning goal with less than seven minutes to go in the game against Switzerland. With a delayed penalty coming against Switzerland, the U.S. pulled goaltender Casey DeSmith in favor of an extra attacker, and Phillips scored on a shot off the post to account for the 6-5 final.

With the victory the U.S. Under-18 Select Team finished in 7th place at the 2008 Under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. Caleb Herbert, who scored two goals, was named Team USA's Player of the Game.

"It's good to see the guys find a victory in a difficult game and end the tournament on a strong note," said former DU assistant and Team USA Head Coach Seth Appert (Albany, N.Y.). "We knew we were playing in a tremendously difficult bracket, so it is great to end it with a win."

Herbert opened the game's scoring when his wrist shot from the high slot beat Swiss netminder Remo Trub through the legs with Team USA on the power play at 12:06. Switzerland scored twice before Herbert tallied his second of the game, knocking in a long pass from Collin Bowman (Littleton, Colo.) at 17:44, to tie the game, 2-2.

After Switzerland took the lead at 8:02 of the second frame, Steven Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.) scored on an across-the-crease pass from Christopher McCarthy (Collegeville, Pa.) at 9:16 to again tie the game for Team USA. Switzerland a 4-3 lead at 11:31 before Brendan Rempel (Willington, Conn.) knocked the puck out of the air and into the back of the Swiss net at 14:28 to knot the game at four. Nick Oliver (Wannaska, Minn.) re-directed a slapshot from Bowman at 17:31 to give the U.S. a 5-4 advantage after 40 minutes.

Switzerland scored at 8:41 of the third, before Phillips' heroics talling the game-winning goal less than a minute later.

Former DU Assistant Becomes AHCA President

From: Polytech Online
by Melanie Depoian

The American Hockey Coaches Association announced in May that former DU assistant coach Seth Appert was selected by its members as their new president. Appert follows in the footsteps of University of Denver coach George Gwozdecky, under whom he got his coaching start. Gwozdecky will act as an advisor to the board and particularly to the president, as stated in the AHCA bylaws.

We are thrilled that Seth has agreed to serve in this capacity, said Joe Bertagna, AHCA executive director, in a press release. His self-confidence and energy will give our organization a boost as we set out to meet the demands of our many constituencies.

Appert will serve a three-year term as president, while he continues to guide the Engineers (Rensselaer Polytech Institute) toward a championship.

The AHCA bylaws describe the duties of the president, including to be chair of the Ethics Committee, to represent the AHCA, and to prepare written correspondence with the NCAA, USA Hockey, NHL, USOC, and other such bodies with the executive director, as well as to initiate revisions to the constitution as necessary.

Butler Readies Himself For Professional Career

(above) Professional hockey player Chris Butler hopes to finish his degree from DU within two years

From: Portland Pirates.com

Portland, Maine - When Chris Butler signed a contract with the Buffalo Sabres on April 13, 2008, opting to forgo his final year at the University of Denver, he became the fourth player in the past three years to leave DU early for a chance to play in the NHL. His collegiate career may be over on the ice, but off the ice it's a different story; Butler plans to complete his bachelor's degree in Business within the next two years to keep a promise he made to his grandmother. That shows loyalty and determination that would be welcome by teammates and fans wherever he plays.

In the 2007-2008 season, Butler earned RBK/Hockey AHCA West-All American second-team honors and All-WCHA second-team accolades. He was named to the WCHA Final Five and Wells Fargo Denver Cup all-tournament teams. Butler blocked a team high 110 shots while scoring three goals and 17 points in 41 games for the Pioneers. The St. Louis, Missouri native appeared in 115 games over three seasons and finished his collegiate career with 66 points on 20 goals and 46 assists.

RPI head coach and former DU assistant Seth Appert describes Butler saying, "He's the ultimate two way defenseman. He can and does provide offense, but he does it with minimal risk to his game. When he contributes offensively he does it by making great decisions. Chris is a rare defenseman that runs the first power play, but can also match against the other team's top line."

Butler represented team USA at the 2006 World Junior Championships held in Vancouver, Canada, where he was a teammate of fellow Sabres prospect Nathan Gerbe. In the 2004-2005 season, he led Sioux City (USHL) with a +36 plus/minus rating and was named to the first team All-USHL, earning a spot in the USHL All-Star Game.
