Colorado College Caught With Schwartz Down

(above) This was a common sight on Saturday night

Colorado College forward Rylan Schwartz spent Saturday evening in a suit and tie at Magness Arena.  Without their star on the ice, CC was dropkicked out of Magness Arena 6-2 by the University of Denver hockey team.

Things were  tight heading into the third period with DU holding a 3-2 edge.  The final period was an exclamation point on a great weekend as DU rolled to a famous victory.  It was the first Pioneer sweep of CC since 2005.

Senior Chris Knowlton stole the show for DU this weekend.  He had two goals, two assists and was +4 on Saturday.  DU Freshman Gave Levin scored his first DU goal and added an assist while playing on DU's first line.

In a reversal of recent form this season, all six goals were scored by DU's forwards.  Matt Tabrum, Quinten Shore & Shawn Ostrow also scored for DU.

Two Front Page Articles About DU-CC Series

The front pages of the Colorado Springs Gazette and Denver Post sports sections had fantastic articles today about college hockey.

The Gazette focused on the matchup tonight between #14 ranked Colorado College and #2 ranked DU.  The Post looked at the Colorado Thunderbirds hockey development program and the inroads that have been made in youth hockey in Colorado in recent years.

Zac Larraza Becomes DU's Latest Hero

(above) Zac Larraza's game winning goal ended the longest playoff game in Final 5 history
by Roman Augustovitz

Zac Larraza was wearing a white hard hat after Denver's 4-3, two-overtime triumph over Minnesota Duluth on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in the Final Five semifinals.

Larraza was the game's unlikeliest of heroes. The fourth-line winger from Scottsdale, Ariz., had not scored a goal in 23 games this season. Yet he ended this 3-hour, 45-minute struggle on a rebound at 8:14 of the second extra session.

He really should have given his hard hat -- awarded after games to the Pioneers' hardest worker -- to the goalie. Sam Brittain faced 70 shots and stopped 67 in the longest game in Final Five history. It went 88 minutes, 14 seconds in ice time.

Larraza? "At most I played about 10 shifts," he said. "I had fresh legs in the overtime."

He scored on his only shot of the game, seconds after linemate Matt Tabrum clanked a shot off the right post.

Denver Post Profiles Matt Tabrum

by Mike Chambers

In some ways, Colorado Springs native Matt Tabrum is no different from Littleton's T.J. Tanberg and Richard Bachman, the Testwuide brothers of Vail and, more recently, John Ryder and Chris Knowlton of Colorado Springs.

Each grew up a University of Denver or Colorado College fan but went on to play for the intrastate rival he used to despise. Tanberg and Bachman played for the Tigers, and Ryder and Knowlton are current Pioneers [read entire article].

Chambers Blog Has Injury Updates and Xmas Stories

Mike Chambers
Our favorite hockey scribe has been busy this week.

DU's ongoing injury problems include a new name.  Mike Chambers Blog sheds some light on David Makowski, who won't play this weekend, Adam Murray, who may play this weekend & Sam Brittain who is starting to skate.

Chambers has details of University of Denver hockey players Juho Olklinuora and Matt Tabrum's unusual Christmas vacation.  The players spent the holiday at the home of Air Force head coach Frank Serratore and his family.  The blog posting is a great read.

News & Notes From Around PioNation

Rough weekend for former University of Denver assistant coach Seth Appert. His RPI squad was upset in the first round of the ECAC playoffs by last place Colgate and RPI dropped out of the Top 15 in the Pairwise. This is the second year in a row that RPI has exited in the first round of the ECAC playoffs, despite win totals of 18 games in 2009-10 and 20 games this season.
