Chambers Article Questions Dakota Mermis' Commitment

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post penned an article today portraying a player that hasn't been happy with his coaching, his utilization or his playing time on his last three teams.
Whether the unhappiness stems from overbearing parents, pressure from family advisers or the
player himself or a combination of all three is not answered.
Like an onion, its going to take time to peel back the true story about Dakota Mermis' departure from the University of Denver. Many will ask why this departure different from the half dozen or so other student athletes that left their teams over the XMAS Break or the dozens of other players who choose major juniors over college hockey every year.
Dakota Mermis is not an elite hockey player at this time. He was battling for playing time with six other players, most of whom had statistics and performance far superior than Dakota's.
This was not a major recruiting coup for the London Knights. They did not acquire a player who will be a sure-fire NHL prospect.
This was a loss for the University of Denver, because Dakota Mermis was well on his way to becoming a very steady, reliable defenseman over the next three or four seasons. In time he could of developed into a leader and perhaps a star. It takes even the best players years, not months, to develop to an elite defenseman in the WCHA.
Dakota left DU to pursue his dream of playing in the NHL. Sooner or later he's going to discover that sixth men at DU rarely transition to NHL stardom.

DU's men's lacrosse team will host the Whitman's® Sampler® Mile High Classic. The Pioneers will face Notre Dame in a double header with defending National Champions Loyola playing Air Force at Mile High Stadium on March 16, 2013. Last year's event drew 12,282 at Mile High Stadium.
Denver Post Cuts Pioneer Hockey Coverage

Several LetsGoDU readers of the Denver Post noticed that the DU hockey coverage was significantly reduced last week. No mid-week article on the team, no preview on the series on Friday and then a pathetic four paragraph AP story on the game on Friday night.
We've been spoiled over the past few years with excellent DU hockey coverage by the Post. Mike Chambers, Adrian Dater, Terry Frei and Mark Kiszla have done an amazing job covering the Pioneers after the demise of the Rocky Mountain News.
The Post deserves credit for stepping forward and covering college hockey better than any other large newspaper in recent years. Far better than the Boston Globe, the Star-Tribune and New York papers combined. But now our coverage is being compromised and DU's flagship sport will inevitably suffer if the trend continues.

DU Senior David Carle was hired this week by the USHL Green Bay Gamblers according to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post.

For the second straight year the DU basketball program posted an NCAA Top Ten improvement in attendance. Not only that, but they led the Sunbelt conference in attendance.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post is reporting that Dylan Gambrell has made a verbal commitment to the University of Denver. Check out Mike Chambers Blog for more information about the player.
"Ninth-grader Dylan Gambrell has committed to play hockey for the University of Denver, his coach said. Gambrell plays for the U16 Colorado Thunderbirds (Tier 1, triple-A), coached by former Pioneers forward Angelo Ricci, whose organization has become a feeder program to the local NCAA powerhouse."

Congrats to the DU Women & Men's Swimming & Diving Teams. In its final Sun Belt Conference Championships, DU left the conference as back-to-back champions. The Pioneers totaled 18 first-place finishes en route to both team titles.

Thanks to DU's mens basketball 64-52 victory on Sunday, the Pioneers will be the third seed — and receive one of the three byes into the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Pioneers will play Sunday night against the South Alabama-Troy winner in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The Pioneers Women's hoops team gained their 19th victory of the season Sunday, defeating North Texas 55-36 at Magness Arena. They head into the Sunbelt Tournament quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed in the West Division. The Pioneers play next Sunday at 11:15 a.m. vs. the first-round winner between Florida International and Louisiana-Lafayette.
