The Colorado Eagles (CHL) announced Wednesday that they have signed rookie forward Matthew Glasser, a product of the University of Denver and a 7th-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2005.

Glasser joins the CHL’s reigning MVP, Kevin Ulanski, as a former Pioneer on the Eagles’ roster.

In 133 games over four seasons at DU, the 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pound two-way forward collected 21 points (13-8-21) and 60 penalty minutes. Glasser was named an alternate captain last season, adding leadership to a resume that reflects strong academic success as well — highlighted by winning the Dr. Art Mason Award.

The Eagles, founded and owned by former DU coach Ralph Backstrom, have sold out every home game in the Budweiser Events Center (Loveland, CO) since the team was founded in 2003.as DU hockey’s top scholar/athlete the past two years (co-winning last season).

The University of Denver men's lacrosse team will host No. 6 Loyola University at INVESCO Field at Mile High today at 1 p.m. MT in the final regular season home game for the Pioneers. DU has a seven game winning streak and today's game will be for an NCAA tournament bid. Loyola has most likely already clinched an At-large bid.

As expected, Jason Zucker's performance at the World Under 18 Championships sent his NHL Draft stock upwards. He cracked the Top 30 of the International Scouting Service's List of Top 30 Prospects for the upcoming NHL Draft. Zucker and incoming Freshman Beau Bennet both have a chance of being selected in the first round of the NHL Draft in June.

DU Alum Kevin Ulanski has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Central Hockey League. Ulanski had 34 goals, 75 assists and a league-best 109 points this season for the Colorado Eagles. He also led the league with a plus-45 rating.

2011 recruit Scott Mayfield was selected by the Kitchener Rangers in the 6th Round of the OHL Draft. Since Mayfield's parents attended DU Law School together, its pretty likely that he'll attend Denver in 2011.

2012 recruit Dakota Mermis was selected in the 12th round of the OHL Draft by the London Knights. No doubt the Knights will try and pry Mermis away from playing at DU, but there are a couple of reasons to think that he will play for the Pioneers. His other brother Jarrod is coming to DU next season and his father is a school teacher so presumably a college education is a priority for the family.

DU Alum Kevin Ulanski will be the centerpiece for the CHL Colorado Eagles this season. Ulanski returns to a team that has won two Championships, sold out almost every one of its games in Ft. Collins and split its opening series (OTL & Win) with the defending champion Texas Brahma's this weekend. Ulanski had two assists to open the season.

NHL Report: Matt Carle has 1 goal and 7 assists in just six games for the Philadelphia Flyers. Paul Stastny has 1 goal and 5 assists for the first place Colorado Avalanche & Tyler Bozak has one assist in one game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are winless this season.

Former DU Captain Andy Thomas will open the season with the ECHL Trenton Devils. Thomas played in his first professional season last year splitting his time between the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL and the Iowa Chops of the AHL. With the Condors Andy played in 24 games and has 14 assists. With the Iowa Chops Andy played in 25 games and had 4 assists on the year. While at DU, Thomas had 6 goals and 20 assists over the course of 159 college career games.

Former DU goaltender Glenn Fisher is no longer in the Edmonton Oilers organization. A few days ago, Fisher signed with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the East Coast Hockey League.

LOVELAND — Left wing Kevin Ulanski, an assistant captain for back-to-back national championship teams at the University of Denver in 2004 and 2005, and defenseman Scott Polaski, who played for rival Colorado College at the same time, have become friends as Colorado Eagles teammates.

If you know anything at all about the Gold Pan rivalry, you know that was no sure thing.

"At first I was a little bit skeptical because it was such a huge rivalry," Polaski said with a laugh Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center. "But now that I've gotten to know him, I know they're good guys too. I love to play with him now."

Ulanski and Polaski have a lot in common.

They're both 26 and in their fourth full professional seasons after playing four years of NCAA hockey. They accept reality: Their chances of reaching the NHL are minuscule, and although both have made appearances at the sport's Triple-A level, the American Hockey League, they now embrace playing for the CHL Eagles as an optimum minor-league existence.

They're also going after a championship together.

Polaski had a goal in the Eagles' 5-4 overtime win against the Texas Brahmas in Game 2 of the Ray Miron President's Cup Finals on Friday. Tied 1-1, the series continues today with Game 3 in North Richland Hills, Texas.

A Colorado Springs native, Polaski stayed home to go to CC, and he spent part of his stay with the Tigers on a line with diminutive stars Brett Sterling and Marty Sertich, both now playing in the AHL.

After leaving DU, Ulanski made several stops in the ECHL and United Hockey League while wedging in 53 AHL games with Albany and Milwaukee. The native of Madison, Wis., signed with the Eagles before this season, and he had 24 goals in 63 games for Colorado in 2008-09 and has added five goals in 12 playoff games during the Eagles' run.

"I love the area," Ulanski said. "I spent four good years in college here, and I was looking to get back. When this opportunity jumped out at me, I had to take it. This is an awesome place to settle down, and I'm glad to be back.

"My daughter and her mother had moved to Denver from Madison, so that gives me a chance to be close to my daughter. I know a lot of people around here, and it's like a second home to Madison for me."

The Eagles have five players in their 30s, unusual in a league that allots four "veteran" spots per team. Ulanski isn't planning to emulate star winger Greg Pankewicz, still going strong at 38, but he hopes to keep playing for a few years before moving into the business world.

"I'd definitely like to finish my career here," Ulanski said. "And then when a job comes around, I'd like to stay in the Denver area. I was a finance-marketing major. It might be hard to get into that right now, but I'd also like to stay involved in hockey somehow. I'm not positive about what I'd like to do yet, but I've got my eyes open."

Considering the average salary is barely $500 a week in the CHL, this isn't a way to get wealthy or bankroll a future business venture. CHL teams pay living expenses, though, and offer other perks and connections. The major lure is virtually universal.

"We're playing because we love the game," Ulanski said. "It's an opportunity to keep playing."

Kevin Ulanski Named CHL Player Of The Week

University of Denver Alum Kevin Ulanski who helped lead the University of Denver to two National Championships was named CHL Player of the Week. Ulanski plays for the Colorado Eagles in Ft. Collins in the Central Hockey League.

Ulanski had six points in three games for the Northwest Division and Northern Conference leading Eagles. Colorado went 2-1 on the week and the Madison, Wisconsin native had points in each game and scored the game winning goal in each victory. In his first CHL season, the former DU star ranks just outside the league's top 10 with 31 points (11-20=31). Last week, he notched the game winning shootout goal and an assist in the Eagles 3-2 win in at Rapid City. After recording an assist in Colorado's loss to Amarillo, Ulanski scored the game winner and had a pair of assists in the team's 7-5 win versus Arizona.

DU Alum Kevin Ulanski is coming back to Colorado, where some of his most memorable moments as a hockey player took place.

The former University of Denver Pioneer signed with the Colorado Eagles today, becoming the first non-returning player signed by the team for the 2008-09 season.

Ulanski has spent the last three seasons playing for the Elmira Jackals. This will be his first experience in the CHL, but he said he is looking forward to the return to the Centennial State.

“Getting back to Colorado is going to be awesome for me,” said Ulanski. “I loved every bit of it when I was in college, and now getting to play with the Eagles is going to be exciting. They always are competing for the championship, and I like to win.”

If Ulanski is used to one thing in hockey, it’s winning. Another savvy player, he has plenty of big-game experience. He was the assistant captain for the DU back-to-back championship teams, as well as the MVP of the UHL’s Colonial Cup Championship playoffs in 2006-07 while with the Rockford IceHogs.

His time in the AHL, considered the “AAA” of minor-league hockey, proved beneficial, and he hopes to get there again, but he is gearing his focus on helping the Eagles for now.

“My goal has always been to play in the (AHL) … and I’m not cutting out the chance at moving up again,” Ulanski said, “but I’m going to be by my family, and I’m going to try and win and have fun while I’m playing again.

“I like to think of myself as a reliable forward on both ends of the ice, I like to score goals and set up plays, but I also pride myself on defense and doing what it takes to win.”

Kevin McClelland also said Ulanski was a player the Eagles had been looking at for a while, and he has the versatility to fill many roles.

“He’s a guy that’s going to bring a lot of speed to our hockey club, and a lot of experience,” McClelland said. “Anytime you get someone that’s won championships, they know how much you have to sacrifice to get to that level.”

Ulanski will reunite with Erik Adams, and he also said he knows Scott Polaski quite well from playing against him while Polaski was at Colorado College.

In 217 career professional games as a winger, Ulanski has registered 125 points (45 goals, 80 assists). His best year statistically came in 2006-07, when he scored 66 points in 61 games. He also has averaged about a point per game in the postseason, scoring 22 points in two playoff stints.

DU Alums Not Injured In Hockey Bus Crash

It could have been a lot worse.

That's how several members of the Elmira Jackals hockey team feel after their bus rammed the back of a tractor-trailer on a Pennsylvania interstate early Thursday. DU Hockey Alums Luke Fulghum (lower left) and Kevin Ulanski play for the Jackals and are listed on the team roster. Ulanski was not injured in the accident and Fulghum did not travel on the bus because he had a previous injury.

The accident took place amid darkness about 4:30 a.m. in Harborcreek, Pa., near Exit 37 on Interstate 90. The team was on its way back home from a two-game Ohio trip that began with a win in Dayton on Tuesday night and concluded with a Wednesday night loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones.

As most of the players slept, the bus slammed into a tractor-trailer, caromed down an embankment and stopped upright in a field, said Pennsylvania State Trooper James Quirk. Harborcreek Fire Chief Richard Chiappazzi, who was on the scene, told WSEE-TV in Erie, Pa., that the truck was loaded with drywall.

Chiappazzi said that the bus's momentum carried it about 300 feet off the road. The bus driver, 56-year-old Kenneth Nance of Blossburg, was seriously injured and had to be extricated from the wreckage. Chiappazzi said rescue workers needed almost an hour and 45 minutes to remove Nance from the bus. Other than the driver, the players and staff escaped without serious injury.

But it was a harrowing few minutes until people could figure out what was going on, said defenseman Chris Busby, who said he came through the accident OK.

"I was sleeping. That's when I woke up and got slammed against the wall. We were all in individual bunks," Busby said. "We swerved off the road and went into a ditch. We were tumbling around and didn't know what was going on. People were screaming.

"Once things calmed down, we sorted things out and saw how serious it was," he said. "I woke up, and right away, I knew something bad was happening. It was the scariest moment of my life."

Nance was taken by helicopter to Hamot Medical Center in Erie with serious lower body injuries. A hospital spokeswoman said Nance was in serious condition in the intensive care unit, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Nance was employed by JGM Coach Co. of Wellsboro, said Jackals General Manager Robbie Nichols of First Arena in Elmira, who was not on the bus.

A replacement bus carrying team members arrived at the arena shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday. As players filed off the bus, it was hard to tell most of them had been in a harrowing accident, except for goaltender Dan LaCosta. He was on crutches, and Nichols described him as the most seriously injured player.

Several other players will have to be evaluated to see how well they came through the crash, he said.

"(Defenseman) Dan Boeser has a bad knee. I couple of them have sore necks," said Nichols, a former player and coach himself. "Obviously, we've got injuries. As a player and a coach, in 20 years of riding buses, one of my biggest fears was a bus accident. I always sit up front."

One positive break the Jackals got is their schedule. They don't play again until Wednesday, Nichols said.

The Jackals, in their eighth season of existence and first in the ECHL, will put a team on the ice on Wednesday, but they aren't sure yet who will be able to suit up, said Coach Steve Martinson.

Martinson called Nichols at home from his cell phone shortly after the accident.

Other than feeling a little sore, Martinson escaped injury, even though equipment manager Jim Carey landed on top of him when the bus careened off the road.

"I was sleeping when it happened. It was confusing because it was so dark," Martinson said. "I was trying to find my shoes. We were calling the police. Nobody knew where we were. We were up front trying to push out the front of the bus where the driver was pinned. "

Team Vice President of Communications Grady Whittenburg said the accident was scary, but it wasn't as serious for the team as it could have been.

"The first concern was to make sure everyone was OK. Everyone was checking on each other," Whittenburg said. "Our first concern was for the driver.

"If you travel on a bus long enough, it's in the back of your mind. You hope you never go through it, and if it does happen, you hope it never happens again. At least we were in a field. We were pretty fortunate."

It is unknown at this time if two DU hockey alums sustained minor injuries as passengers on the Elmira Jackals team bus was involved in an accident at approximately 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning in Harborcreek, Pa., near Exit 37 on Interstate 90.

The driver of the bus, Kenneth Nance, 56, of Blossburg, had to be extricated from the bus and was airlifted to Hamot Medical Center in Erie with serious lower body injuries. The Associated Press is reporting that a hospital spokeswoman said Nance was in serious condition in the intensive-care unit.

Yesterday, Coach Gwozdecky was asked during Ask the Coach...

Danielle (Boulder): Most of the national championship team from last year returns for the 2005-2006 season... team's leading scorer, WCHA Rookie of the Year, Frozen Four MVP...With all this returning talent, how is it that you began the season ranked number one and have gradually slipped to 15 in the national polls?

Coach Gwozdecky: Through our last two National Championship runs, we have had the great luxury of a good sized senior class. These seniors have been strong, skilled and had valuable experience. We are challenged this year with having only one senior who has been a regular in our lineup over the last three years. As a result, we have asked many of our younger and more inexperienced players to assume roles of primary responsibility that they are slowly getting comfortable with.

I thought this was a very candid answer, so I went back to Heisenberg's site and did a little research to see what was going on at DU in 2001, during the Letter of Intent signing periods. This was a very pivotal moment in DU's Hockey History. The Pioneers had their last losing season under Coach Gwozdecky in 1999-2000 and may not have been on the radar of the top college hockey "blue chippers." Down the road in Colorado Springs, Don Lucia was in the process of moving on to Minnesota and Scott Owens was taking over the reins at CC.

During the "Early LOI" period (March-May, 2001), DU signed Brett Skinner and Ryan Dingle. (During this period DU also signed Jon Foster, Kevin Ulanski and Nick Larson, who were "late signees" coming to DU in the following Spring). Skinner was a huge prize for the coaching staff. He was a Canadian defenseman who played for Des Moines in the USHL. At 6'1" 170 lbs. he might have been on the "skinny" side, but Heisenberg had him listed as the #2 recruit in the USHL and the #1 defenseman. During his DU playing career he improved unbelievably and eventually became an All-American his Junior season. As we all know, he signed with the Vancouver Canucks a year early. The other signee, Ryan Dingle from Steamboat Springs ended up deferring his college admission at DU for two seasons, but has been a fantastic addition for the Pioneers. So if you were to grade DU's recruiting signees in the Fall of 2001 you would have to give the coaches an "A" or perhaps an "A+", when you factor in the contributions made by Foster, Ulanski and Larson during the Championship runs. There were some real "finds" there.

During the Fall Signing Period of 2001 DU inked commitments from Gabe Gauthier, Scott Drewicki, and Glenn Fisher. Gabe Gauthier was a another huge signing for the DU coaching staff. Gauthier was a Californian playing for the Chilliwack Chiefs along with Jeff Tambellini, who ended up being a superstar with Michigan. Tambellini racked up 129 points for Michigan in just three seasons, but like Skinner signed a professional contract a year early. Tambellini was considered to be the #1 recruit out of British Columbia and Gauthier #2.

Gauthier narrowed his choices down to Boston University and DU. Gabe's father was so sure that he was heading to Boston, that he loaded up on BU Hockey shirts on a recruiting visit. Gabe had played some prep hockey out East, so he was familiar with the area. Something must have happened on his visit to Denver, however, because Gabe choose the Pioneers in a bit of a surprise at the time. One GWG against Maine, two National Championships and over 100 career points later and Gauthier is a shoo-in for the DU Hall of Fame.

Glenn Fisher was signed during the 2001 Fall signing period as well. He was always slated to come to DU a year after Gauthier. Fisher was a prize recruit considered by Inside College Hockey to be the #1 incoming goaltender. The Scott Drewicki signing can only be descibed as a "bust." He was a sought after prospect from Alberta, and was ranked by Heisenberg as the #2 defenseman and #13 prospect overall. When DU signs a player out of Canada, big things are expected. In a season and a half at DU he saw limited duty with the Pioneers appearing in 28 games and notching up two assists. He quit the team during the middle of first Championship season and transferred to Merrimack. The irony was that as soon as he quit in his sophmore season, DU had a rash of injuries and he would have seen more playing time. Add to the fact that he walked out on two National Championships and perhaps a key role this season. Hard to say what kind of a grade you would give the Fall Signees. Skinner is one of the top Power Play defensemen in DU history and he played a pivotal role in two Championships. Perhaps a "B," but it sure would be handy to have a few more Seniors on the roster right now.

Ted O'Leary was a Late Signee in the Spring of 2002. He has played in two National Championship games, is the Assistant Captain this season and as we all know is a three time WCHA All-Academic Team selection. You have to love what he has contributed to the Pioneers over his career. The coaches frequently point to his leadership and hard work to motivate the younger guys.
