DU 4 CC 1 Final

The University of Denver hockey team defeated Ccolorado College 4-1 tonight on two power play goals, one even strength goal and an empty net goal late in the game. There was no scoring in the 1st in a period that featured a fairly even game with 13 shots by each team.

DU built a three goal lead in the 2nd period including power play goals by Anthony Maiani and John Lee. Luke Salazar added an even strength goal right after John Lee's power play goal.

The third period was scoreless until late in the game when Stephen Schultz scored a power play goal for CC. Jason Zucker added the empty netter with 9 seconds left in the game to ice it for DU.

DU 2 WI 2 Final OT

DU steals a point from Wisconsin tonight by storming back from a 2-0 deficit in the 3rd period. Kyle Ostrow got both DU goals at the 8:18 and 15:16 marks of the 3rd period. Jesse Martin got the assist on the first goal and Anthony Maiani and David Makowski got the assists on the 2nd goal. Neither team could score in the overtime.

Wisconsin freshman Mark Zengerle put the Badgers up 1-0 at 4:17 in the 1st period when DU turned the puck over and he fired it past Sam Brittain. The Badgers built a 2-0 lead at the 8:17 mark of the 2nd period on another DU turnover. Sean Dolan got the goal with assists to Ryan Little and Patrick Johnson.

Scott Gudmanson had an outstanding game in net for the Badgers with 35 saves. DU goalie Sam Brittain also had a solid game in goal as he stopped 21 pucks for DU. Neither team had a power play goal tonight.

BC 3 DU 0 Final

Boston College completed their sweep of the University of Denver this weekend. Jimmy Hayes scored on a DU turnover at 1:28 of the 1st period. DU had some good chances but couldn't find the back of the net. Jason Zucker absorbed a knee on knee hit near the end of the 1st period but returned later in the game.

Tommy Cross gave BC a 2 goal lead at 8:57 of the 2nd period when his shot deflected off of a DU d-man and went past Sam Brittain.

The 3rd period was scoreless until Cam Atkinson scored an empty net goal for BC to ice the game at 19:43 of the period. DU did not score a power play goal all weekend which played a major part in losing the game. DU had 5 minute power play when Phillip Samuelsson was ejected from the game for a hit to the head and couldn't cash in. Sam Brittain played very well in goal for DU.

Next up will be the Wisconsin Badgers at Magness next weekend.

DU 5 UVM 3 Final

The University of Denver hockey team withstood a determined effort by the University of Vermont to escape with a 5-3 victory on Friday night. Falling behind 2-0, the Pioneers clawed their way back into the game and exploded with three third period goals to wrap up an improbable victory.

DU fell behind 2-0 at 6:15 of the 2nd period when Wahsontiio Stacey scored his second goal of the game. Drew Shore responded for DU at 10:43 of the Period on DU's only power play of the evening with an assist to Anthony Maiani. Matt Donovan tied the game late in the 2nd period on a beautiful short handed goal assisted by Maiani and Jesse Martin.

Donovan gave DU a 3-2 lead at 6:31 of the 3rd period, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. An assist went to freshman Dan Olszewski.

Midway through the period DU succesfully killed a 5 on 3 UVM power play. Right after killing the 5 on 3 Jesse Martin scored DU's 4th goal at 9:38 of the period. It was the game winner. He was assisted by Luke Salazar and Kyle Ostrow. UVM pulled their goalie with 2 plus minutes to go and scored their 3rd goal as Stacey got a hat trick.

Adam Murray made a spectacular game saving glove save with about 46 seconds left. He was flashing the leather all night long. Drew Shore iced the game late with his 2nd goal of the night, an unassisted empty netter.

DU 2 MTU 1 Final

The University of Denver defeated Michigan Tech 2-1 on Friday Night in a hard fought game to close in on their quest for the Final Five. Even though DU outshot MTU 40-20, Techplayed a close checking, tight game. Josh Robinson, the Tech goalie, was outstanding limiting DU to just 2 goals.

Jesse Martin put DU on the board at the 37 second mark of the 1st period. Assists were given to Anthony Maiani and Kyle Ostrow. On a weird play in which Marc Cheverie was screened, Carl Nielsen backhanded a puck towards the net and it trickled in to tie the game at one at the 15:31 mark.

Brian Gifford got the game winner and put DU up 2-1 at the 15:45 mark of the second with assists to Drew Shore and Chris Knowlton. There was no scoring in the 3rd period. DU is still #1 in Pairwise but it is oh so close with Miami.

CC 2 DU 1 Final

CC eked out a 2-1 win at Magness this evening. DU opened the game with a 2 minute flurry but CC goalie Joe Howe kept them off of the scoresheet. Nick Dineen put CC ahead 1-0 at the 8:22 mark of the 1st period.

DU came out with energy in the 2nd period and Patrick Wiercioch tied the game at 1 at the 1:05 mark of the period. Rhett Rakhshani and Marc Cheverie got assists on the Wiercioch goal. DU took a penalty and Bill Sweatt put CC ahead 2-1 on the PP at the 16:03 mark of the period.

The 3rd period was scoreless and DU pulled Marc Cheverie with 1:25 left. DU had a number of chances in the last minute and Joe Howe stopped all of the shots.

The game was an exciting close fough battle between two archrivals. DU had a number of chances to tie the game but couldn't. Both goalies played well and the difference was CC's power play goal which Chevy had no chance on.

Even through DU lost the game, the team was presented with the MacNaughton Trophy for winning the WCHA Championship. The winner of tomorrow night's game wins the Gold Pan. With tonight's loss DU drops to #2 in the Pairwise.

What you might have missed; Paul Stastny was ushered onto the ice during a 1st period break in the action. He was wearing his USA jersey and Silver Medal from the Olympics. He removed the USA jersey to reveal his 60th anniversary DU jersey. Very cool.

DU 3 WI 3 Final OT

Big Joe Colborne scored a power play goal just past the halfway mark of the 1st period to give DU the 1-0 lead. Wisconisn controlled most of the play for the first 10 minutes and then DU got their legs under them. Marc Cheverie made some nice saves early. Wisconsin hit the pipe early in the game and the goal light went on. The review showed it clearly hit the pipe.

No scoring in the 2nd period. DU killed off all of Wisconsin's power plays and Cheverie was solid.

Kyle Ostrow tipped one in the Badger net to make it 2-0 DU early in the 3rd period. Blake Geoffrion scored a power play goal for Wisconsin on a tip in in front of Chevy 5 minutes into the 3rd period to cut DU's lead to one. Michael Davies tied the game at 2 on a nice shot with just over 12 minutes remaining. Blake Geoffrion then gavs the Badgers a 3-2 lead near the midway mark of the period. Anthony Maiani tied the score at 3 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd. That sent the game into overtime.

An exciting overtime in which both teams had multiple chances to win it but the game ended in a 3-3 tie. DU was able to put 4 shots on goal in the OT and blocked a couple of Badger shots that never made it to the goal. Good game by both teams. DU stays in 2nd in the WCHA, 1 point behind UMD with a game in hand. CC is in 3rd 1 point behind DU, SCSU is in 4th 2 points behind and Wisconsin is in 5th place 3 points behind. CC has played 2 more games than DU. With Miami tying Alaska-Fairbanks last night, DU and Miami stay tied for 1st in the Pairwise.

DU Ties Minnesota State on Saturday 4-4

DU took 3 of a possible 4 WCHA points from MSU this weekend with a win last night and tie tonight at Magness Arena. DU and Colorado College are tied for 1st place in the WCHA with identical 3-0-1 league records and 7 points. DU has an overall record of 5-2-1 and will head to Anchorage, Alaska next weekend to face UAA in another league series.

After falling beind 2-0 early in the first period on goals by MSU's Joe Schiller (Ev) and Tyler Pitlick (PP), DU came back with goals by Drew Shore (Ev) and Tyler Ruegsegger (PP) to end the period tied at 2. DU went ahead 3-2 on a second period goal by Anthony Maiani (EV). MSU tied it up late in the period on Tyler Pitlick's (PP) second goal of the night and the second period finished with the team tied at 3. MSU took a 4-3 third period lead on a goal by Kael Mouillierat (PP). DU tied the game late on a goal by Kyle Ostrow (Ev). Neither team could score in the OT even though both had power plays during the OT period. Patrick Wiercioch had 2 assists for DU tonight. DU goalie Adam Murray had 30 saves and MSU goalie Kevin Murdock had 40 saves.

DU Sweeps The Gophers On The Road

The University of Denver completed a shutout sweep of the Minnesota Golden Gophers with a 3-0 victory on Saturday night. Marc Cheverie recorded his 3rd shutout in a row and second of the weekend. The victory gave DU coach George Gwozdecky his 500th career victory.

Kyle Ostrow put DU on the board with an even strength goal at 10:15 of the 1st period. (Assists Luke Salazar, Drew Shore)

Rhett Rakhsahni scored at 4:27 of the 2nd period on the power play to put DU up 2-0. (Assists Patrick Wiercioch, Tyler Ruegsegger)

Kyle Ostrow tallied his second goal of the night at 4:12 of the 3rd period, also on the power play. (Assists Drew Shore, Jesse Martin).

1929-30 was the last season the Gophers lost consecutive shutouts at home. This also was only the third time in Gopher history that they were shutout in back-to-back games.

Chevy's scoreless streak at 203:19 minuntes is the second longest streak in DU history trailing Peter Mannino's 208:42 in 2004.

On a night when the University of Denver honored its past hockey heros, DU lost to the University of Vemont 6-4. DU was plagued by defensive mistakes that led to several Vermont odd-man rushes.

Freshman Adam Murray started in goal but struggled through an inconsistent evening. At times he made fantastic saves but a decisive six goal against DU was too much to overcome.

One of the few heros for DU was Tyler Ruegsegger scoring two goals.

Big Joe Colborne netted two goals tonight

DU came from behind in a thrilling game at Magness Arena against the University of Vermont. DU trailed 4-2 after 2 periods and cut it to a one goal lead early in the period on a PP goal by Patrick Wiercioch. Then Joe Colborne took over the game and scored the tying and winning goals. DU 3 MTU 1 Final

Kyle Ostrow (above) scored the game winner tonight

With this weekend's sweep of MTU DU remains in first place in the WCHA, 3 points ahead of Wisconsin, 5 points ahead of CC and 6 points ahead of North Dakota and Minnesota. Marc Cheverie had a stellar night with 31 saves against a revitalized MTU team. Patrick Mullen made some great passes tonight and had the primary assists on DU's first two goals.

1st Period: Jesse Martin scored the first of the goal of the game for DU at the 10 minute mark of the period. Dobson got a late goal for MTU to tie it at one with 39 seconds left in the period.

2nd Period: Kyle Ostrow scored the game winning goal with about 4 minutes left in the 2nd.

3rd Period: Rhett Rakhshani scored an empty net goal in the last 4 seconds to ice the game.

J.P Testwuide, Joe Colborne, Rhett Rakhshani and Anthony Maiani. scored goals to lead DU to a thrilling overtime victory on Friday night in Magness Arena.

Maiani's game winner came with 16 seconds left in OT. Jesse Martin fed Maiani a beautiful pass across the front of the MTU net and he banged it in from the backside of the net.

DU had a 3-2 lead late into the 3rd period when Geoff Kinrade of MTU scored the tying goal with 55 seconds left in the period.

Tyler Rugsegger had two goals for DU tonight

Tyler Ruegsegger had two goals for the Pioneers to lead them to a 6-1 win over visting Colgate. DU also got goals from Kyle Ostrow, Luke "The Goal Czar" Salazar, Patrick Wiercioch and Patrick Mullen. Anthony Maiani with 3 assists and Joe Colborne and Tyler Bozak each with 2 assists. DU faces the 13-0-0 Air Force Falcons tomorrow night at 7:00 PM MST.

DU 2 UMD 1 - Colborne Express Arrives In Denver

DU spent most of the first period in the sin bin while Minnesota Duluth put in an inspired efffort. Rhett Rakhshani was injured in the opening period and did not play the rest of the game. Unconfirmed reports said he suffered an injury to his mid section. He was able to escort/skate his parents out for the ceremony in between the 1st and 2nd periods.

Joe Colborne scored a PP goal to put DU ahead in the 2nd period. Gergen got credit for the UMD goal off a puck that deflected off of Brookwell's skate. The puck was shot into the zone by Gergen and it was headed well wide of the net. UMD was on the PP and was also on a delayed penalty when the goal went off of Brookwell's skate.

Tyler Ruegsegger scored the game winner on a beautiful pass from Joe Colborne in the 3rd period. It was also a PP goal.

A nice win for Jimbo on Parent's Weekend.

Colorado College jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers bounced back with two of their own in a thrilling game at Magness Arena. DU held a solid 44-27 shot advantage, but the Tigers seemed to have premium scoring chances.

DU carried large portions of play, especially as the game wore on. CC had a shot ring off the post in overtime.

Ostrow Leads DU Over Ohio State 3-1

Kyle Ostrow scored twice and added an assist to lead DU to a 3-1 triumph over the Ohio State Buckeyes. Anthony Maiani notched a goal and one assist for DU, while sophomore netminder Marc Cheverie turned aside 41-of-42 shots to pick up his fourth victory of the season.

Colorado College tied Clarkson 1-1. CC has not given up a power play goal in 33 shorthanded situations this season.

DU Beats Notre Dame 5-2 In Hall Of Fame Game

Freshman Luke Salazar scored two goals on Saturday night, including the game winner, to fuel DU's 5-2 win over Notre Dame in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Magness Arean. The DU win capped a special weekend in Denver which included the induction of Brett Hull, Brian Leetch, Mike Richter and Cammi Granato into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

Salazar had two goals and an assist to lead the way. Tyler Ruegsegger, Patrick Wiercioch and Anthony Maiani had the other DU goals. Goalie Marc "Chevy" Cheverie was outstanding in net for DU with 23 saves. He definitely saved DU's bacon several times in a penalty filled 2nd period.

DU Loses to Badgers in NCAA Midwest Regional

MADISON, Wis. – Michael Davies tallied two goals and an assist and Shane Connelly stopped 30 shots to lead No. 17 Wisconsin to a 6-2 win over No. 4/5 Denver in the NCAA Midwest Regional tonight before 9,968 fans at Kohl Center. The loss ends Denver’s (26-14-1) season and sends the Badgers (17-17-7) into the regional final tomorrow against North Dakota.

Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.) and Tom May (Eagan, Minn.) scored for DU, and Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made 20 saves in his final game as a Pioneer.

Wisconsin jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals from Davies and Jamie McBain before Jackson put the Pioneers on the scoreboard at 16:40 of the second stanza. Wisconsin outscored Denver 4-1 in the final stanza and rode the rowdy home crowd to its first NCAA tournament win since claiming the national title in 2006.

Denver outshot the Badgers 12-7 in the opening stanza, but hit four pipes through two periods and was stymied all night by the stellar goaltending of Connelly.

“We had a great ride,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “I am extremely proud to coach this team. We gave ourselves a chance to win, and that’s all you can ask for in the NCAA tournament. Wisconsin was given a new life in the NCAA tournament and played a great game tonight.”

After Jackson’s goal made it 2-1, Cody Goloubef put Wisconsin up 3-1 when his blast bounced off the back of Mannino and into the net at 9:19 of the final stanza. John Mitchell made it 4-1 with a breakaway tally at 10:19. May’s wrist shot from the high slot made it 4-2, but Davies’ second goal of the night iced the win at 14:38. Davis Drewiske added the final goal with empty-netter at 17:14.

DU outshot Wisconsin 32-26 and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Wisconsin went 1-for-5 with the man-advantage.

Notes: DU falls to 26-15 overall in the NCAA tournament. The Pioneers had won eight consecutive NCAA tournament games prior to tonight’s loss. DU is 11-2-2 all-time at Kohl Center. Mannino and Andrew Thomas (Bow, N.H.) will participate in the NCAA Skills Challenge during the Frozen Four on Friday, April 11.
