Wiercioch Injury Details Still Not Forthcoming

Wiercioch has not played since the injury. The Senators are letting him have some time before making him, or many details, available to the media. But he is doing well.
He has been attending team meetings.
"He needs to be around," Coach Kleinendorst said. "There is no question he is going to get back to 100 percent. It's just a matter of when he gets through this, he'll be a better player because of his experience and what he's been going through."

Binghamton Senators (AHL) defenseman Patrick Wiercioch was transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse on Saturday after spending Friday night at Lourdes Hospital.
Wiercioch, 21, suffered a serious throat injury when he was struck by a puck during the B-Sens' game on Friday. He was in stable condition at the time of the transfer.
"The update on Patty is he's in good hands," B-Sens coach Kurt Kleinendorst said. "At some point, we are going to transport him to Syracuse just to see a specialist. But I know he's doing well. I know he's stable. They've got everything under control. Honestly, still don't know quite what the extent is. But he's in really good hands, and I know he's doing well."
After Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Norfolk Admirals, Wiercioch was on the B-Sens' minds.
"I know that we all care about Patty," Kleinendorst said. "I know that we all have him in our prayers. But how much it affected us ... I hope we didn't dedicate this one to Patty, because it would have been a shame. But any time you have a teammate that something like that happens to, it can't help but affect you in some way."
Wiercioch's teammates are waiting for news about his condition and hoping for the best.
"It's tough whenever anything like that happens," goalie Mike McKenna said. "Some guys in the room have never played with anyone who's been injured in a way like he was. Some of us have -- guys who have been around longer probably have a better chance of it. From a personal standpoint, we play the game, and we often forget about the risks that are associated with it.
"He's been on our minds the last couple nights, but once play starts, you're into the game, and it just tends to go away. Once the game's over, your mind goes back to it. We're all anxiously awaiting an update to see how he's been doing."

Former University of Denver star Patrick Wiercioch helped the Binghamton Senators win their first-ever Calder Cup championship on Tuesday night, earning a 4-2 series win over the Houston Aeros in the American Hockey League Playoffs.
Wiercioch dished out one assist and posted a +5 rating in 15 playoff games for Binghamton. It was the first professional season for the former DU defenseman, who made his NHL debut this season with Ottawa.

Wiercioch played against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night and appeared in 9 minutes of action. Although he was -2 on the evening, he was on the ice for teammate Colin Greening's first goal of the game. The Senators lost 4-3.
Wiercioch, 20, was fourth among Binghamton defensemen in scoring with 4 goals and 16 points in 64 games. Prior to joining Binghamton for his first pro season, Wiercioch played two seasons with the University of Denver, where he scored 18 goals and had 62 points in 75 games.

When Ottawa Senators training camp opened last autumn, few prospects came as highly touted as the University of Denver’s Patrick Wiercioch. So it was somewhat disappointing to both the young, puck-moving defenceman and the organization as a whole when his first professional season got off to such a slow start.
Wiercioch notched 62 points in 75 games over two years in college — garnering a 2009 invite to Canada’s world junior championship team in the process — only to struggle to 12 points in 55 games with the American Hockey League’s Binghamton Senators.
The good news is that seven of those points came in 10 February games, and if you ask both the player and the team, his hard work is finally starting to pay off.
“Yeah, definitely, I mean over the last 10, 15, 20 games here, it’s been noticeable for me and hopefully my teammates,” Wiercioch said in an interview here. “I’ve been able to get a little more confidence, and I think that’s the hardest part.
“Once you lose your confidence a little a bit, you start struggling. It’s a tough thing to gain backquickly.”
Wiercioch may have been somewhat guilty of believing his own press clippings, most of which projected him as a dark horse to crack the Ottawa Senators’ lineup out of training camp.
It didn’t help that he suddenly morphed from go-to guy into a role player when he arrived in New York State’s Southern Tier, either.
“I was never the guy who wasn’t out there in the last couple of minutes of a game and … not starting the first five, six minutes of a period, when the games is getting going,” he explained. “It’s an adjustment. I think that’s probably what I wasn’t expecting.”
It fell to coach Kurt Kleinendorst to convince Wiercioch that he wasn’t there yet, but would be soon if he was willing to do the work.
“I think that the early expectations that were placed on him were a little bit unfair,” Kleinendorst said. “I just feel like, once I got to know Patty a little bit, it wasn’t really fair. I saw what it had done to him. It built him up and he thought he was so close.”
Since then, the coach said, Wiercioch has delivered on and off the ice.
“The challenge was to be the best player you can be at the rink and away from the rink, that you make good choices in what you do socially and how you take care of yourself — view your body as your temple so to speak,” Kleinendorst said.
“You come in early every day, stay late every day and whatever we’re selling, you’re buying. He has done everything asked.”
Binghamton general manager Tim Murray said it’s too early to say whether Wiercioch will be in the running for an NHL roster spot next year, adding he’ll need to have a big summer.
He believes the talent level is there, though.
“He’s a tall, lean guy (and) it just takes time to get muscle on,” Murray said Tuesday. “He’s got all the tools.”
With his mind in the right place, Wiercioch is turning the attention to his body. At a lanky 6-4, 185 pounds, and without breakaway speed, he needs more strength to succeed at the next level.
“I don’t think you can ever get too strong or too fast,” he said. “Those are just the things that, if you get better at those and you improve in those, making decisions and making plays might be easier because you have that time and space. I think that’s my biggest focus.”
So where does he see himself 365 days from now?
“That’s hopefully in a Sens uniform,” he said, chuckling. “It’s a beautiful country up there (with) great fans.”

In Patrick Wiercioch's mind, it was anything but just an educated guess.
When the Ottawa Senators prospect decided to surrender his final two years of college hockey eligibility with the University of Denver to begin his professional career, he did so knowing the timing couldn't have been more right to make the move.
"I felt like I had an opportunity to make the team this year," said the 19-year-old native of Maple Ridge, B.C. "There's a lot of work ahead of me to earn that spot on the team but if there was ever a time in my life that I was prepared to do it, it would be right now.
"So I'm excited for the opportunity ... It's a goal of mine. I wouldn't have left school if I didn't think I had a legitimate chance to make the team."
"If I do get the chance, I have to make the most of it. If it takes me a little while, it'll take me awhile, but I'm going to keep pushing through to stick with (the Senators)."
Nobody in the Senators organization doubts that the 6-4, 185-pound Wiercioch has a major future with the team. Already, the Senators are envisioning a defensive corps that features first-round picks Erik Karlsson (2008) and Jared Cowen (2009), along with Wiercioch (second round, 2008) and Swedish blueliner David Rundblad, who was obtained for Ottawa's top selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
"He definitely makes great passes," said Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson, who patrolled National Hockey League blue lines for two decades. "He’s kind of got that sneaky, spidery skating style to gets around guys, almost like a Brian Leetch the way he joins the play ... (Wiercioch) knows when to get in on the offence, but he also knows when to get back and play good defence."
"I think I’m mentally prepared to make the jump," he said during a break from workouts at the annual Senators development camp. "Last year, I was raw. I was definitely a young kid awed by everyone around me. You get into the organization, you get into the locker room, the history of the fans and the city … it’s a little overwhelming.
"You want to become a professional, but I probably wasn’t ready for it last year. This year I feel, after another year of playing in a couple of big games (at Denver) … it's not quite like in the NHL, but the experience was good for me so hopefully, I can take that with me."
Wiercioch also soaked up everything he could when he spent the final few weeks of the Senators' 2009-10 season hanging around the big club, including their six-game playoff series with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"To get that little taste of the regular season and playoff run here was helpful, just to teach me how to be a pro," he said. "Day in and day out, you're no longer a student-athlete. You're a professional and you get paid to do your job. There's a lot of things you need to be aware of to take your game to that next level ... To see what guys do on the road to keep their routines and to keep it going for 82 games was pretty special."
With a grin on his face, Wiercioch admits it's the kind of environment he hopes to reside in regularly sometime very soon.
"It's a nice lifestyle," he said. "I'm not going to lie and beat around the bush. It's a great life to live, but it's not an easy life. There's only 600 or 700 individuals in the world that are privileged enough to do it.
"Hopefully, I'm one of those next year and can work my way into staying there."
Chambers Blog Covers Makowski, Polls & Kids
Mike Chambers' Denver Post Blog had three entries this week. Go to the head of the class if you can name DU's three previous USHL Defensive Player of the Year recipients. Incoming recruit David Makowski became the fourth winner this week. Chambers points out that Makowski is older than Patrick Wiercioch who he will replace in the Pioneer lineup.Chambers is cheesed off at the final polls. DU ended up fourth. I think that's about right based on the season they had.
Congrats again to the Colorado Thunderbirds Under-16 National Championship. We'll probably see a player or two from that team in Pioneer uniform around 2013 or so.
Finally thanks to Mike Chambers and the Denver Post for covering the team this season. With the demise of the Rocky Mountain News, the Post could of slacked off and just posted game blurbs this season. Chambers really squeezed a lot of extra coverage into his Blog and the inside scoops all season were excellent. My favorite article all season was the front page of the sports section about "Madness Arena" and our student section.

Mike Chambers' Blog had quite a few interesting items in the past week.Quentin Shore, the third of four Shore brothers, has been selected for the U.S.N.D.P. Under-17 Team. DU has offered him a scholarship for 2012.
The University of Denver's goaltending will be very young next season. Murray is still only 18 and Sam Brittain is 17. Both Peter Mannino and Marc Cheverie were 20 years old when they arrived on campus at DU. Chambers also asked Murray about the "Alaska Rumor."
Chambers has exit conversations with Patrick Wiercioch and Joe Colborne. Chambers raises an interesting point about DU snatching Wiercioch in the 11th hour from Wisconsin. Obviously Wiercioch played a huge role in DU's success the past two seasons. Not many programs could withstand the loss of a player of Patrick's ability and yet its Wisconsin that will play for the National Championship tonight. Good luck to Wisconsin tonight.

New Hampshire had one East first-team choice and two so honored on the second team. Twenty different D-I programs are represented.
There are 14 players from the United States, eight from Canada, and two from Sweden. Seventeen players participated in the NCAA tournament. Three of them advanced to the Frozen Four, all from the West. The honorees include all 10 finalists for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award (see entire list).

He likely won’t play this season because the Senators don’t want to burn a year on his contract, but the 19-year-old was on the ice for practice at Scotiabank Place Friday and will travel with the team on its final road trip of the season to give him a taste of life in the NHL.DU recruits Nick Shore and Jason Zucker will play for the U.S.A. in the Under 18-World Championships in Belarus in two weeks. The NHL Florida Panthers have Jacob Markstrom, who was selected No. 31 in 2008, was awarded the Honken Trophy as the Swedish Elite League's top netminder this season, as well as the league's rookie of the year. He posted a 20-10-10 mark with a 2.01 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 43 games for Byrnas IF Gavle this season. "Jacob Markstrom's contract in Sweden is up at the end of this year and the plan is to sign him and bring him to North America next year," Sexton told NHL.com. "We also have a young goalie named Marc Cheverie (a junior) at Denver University, who we'll move forward and sign as well. Wiercioch, 19, was the Senators’ second-round pick (42nd overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Burnaby, B.C., he concluded his second season at the Western Collegiate Athletic Conference’s University of Denver on March 26 when the Pioneers fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology in the National Collegiate Athletic Association East Regional semifinals. In 39 games with Denver this season, the 6-4, 190-pound Wiercioch scored six goals and 21 assists while adding 34 penalty minutes.
In his rookie season at Denver, Wiercioch scored 12 goals and added 23 assists for 35 points in 36 games. For his efforts he was named to the all-WCHA second team and all-WCHA rookie team. His 12 goals led all NCAA rookie defencemen and ranked third among all NCAA defencemen.
Prior to his arrival in Denver, Wiercioch played one season for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League, where he scored three goals and 18 assists in 40 games. Denver Post: Joe & Pat Have Not Signed Contacts
Mike Chambers of the Denver Post is reporting this evening that Joe Colborne and Patrick Wiercioch have not signed contracts with the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators.Bruins sources have told CSN.com, despite reports to the contrary, that a contract with first-round pick Joe Colborne isn’t a done deal.
"It’s up to him to decide if he’s ready” to play pro hockey. There’s virtually no shot Colborne would play with the Boston Bruins should he sign before the regular season is over. That’s never been the modus operandi of the current B’s front office crew, who develop players with patience, care and a willingness to wait until they’re truly ready for NHL action. Colborne ain’t ready."
Joe Colborne Signs With Boston Bruins...Maybe
A source emailed LetsGoDU that the Boston Bruins just signed Joe Colborne to a contract on Monday afternoon. Later in the day, the Denver Post reported that the contract had not been signed. Perhaps a deal had been agreed to, but as of Monday afternoon nothing was signed.

Sophomore Joe Colborne signed a contract with the Boston Bruins Monday evening and junior Marc Cheverie and sophomore Patrick Wiercioch also are expected to sign NHL contracts.
“I felt like I’ve had two years of great development down here,” Colborne said Monday afternoon. “I have my coaches teammates to thank for that. Boston said they definitely thought it was good for me to come now. They have been really impressed with what’s one on here and the help I’ve gotten here. A decision here as a group, my family and my agents in Boston as well thought it was a great time to make a move.”
Colborne said he is leaving Denver Wednesday morning.
Patrick Wiercioch May Sign With Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Citizen newspaper is reporting that the Ottawa Senators will sign Univeristy of Denver defenceman Patrick Wiercioch today.
Ottawa will play the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night. It is possible that if Wiercioch signed a contract, he may be in the lineup, but no official word as of yet.
Patrick is still trying to decide whether or not to accept the offer. The Ottawa Citizen article is not correct. He hasn't signed a contract yet.

Discounting rumors, Wiercioch said he has not yet made a decision about next season. He was the Ottawa Senators second-round draft pick in 2008, No. 42 overall.
“It was news to me,” he said Monday afternoon. “I got a few text messages saying ‘Congratulations.’ It’s not true as of yet."

CC 2 DU 1 Final
(above) Brian Gifford introduces himself to the Colorado College TigersCC eked out a 2-1 win at Magness this evening. DU opened the game with a 2 minute flurry but CC goalie Joe Howe kept them off of the scoresheet. Nick Dineen put CC ahead 1-0 at the 8:22 mark of the 1st period.
DU came out with energy in the 2nd period and Patrick Wiercioch tied the game at 1 at the 1:05 mark of the period. Rhett Rakhshani and Marc Cheverie got assists on the Wiercioch goal. DU took a penalty and Bill Sweatt put CC ahead 2-1 on the PP at the 16:03 mark of the period.
The 3rd period was scoreless and DU pulled Marc Cheverie with 1:25 left. DU had a number of chances in the last minute and Joe Howe stopped all of the shots.

The game was an exciting close fough battle between two archrivals. DU had a number of chances to tie the game but couldn't. Both goalies played well and the difference was CC's power play goal which Chevy had no chance on.
Even through DU lost the game, the team was presented with the MacNaughton Trophy for winning the WCHA Championship. The winner of tomorrow night's game wins the Gold Pan. With tonight's loss DU drops to #2 in the Pairwise.

What you might have missed; Paul Stastny was ushered onto the ice during a 1st period break in the action. He was wearing his USA jersey and Silver Medal from the Olympics. He removed the USA jersey to reveal his 60th anniversary DU jersey. Very cool.

As title-clinchers go, they hardly get more dramatic than this.
University of Denver captain Rhett Rakhshani's goal with 13.3 seconds left in overtime Saturday lifted the Pioneers to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota State — a win that clinched the regular-season title in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. It was the Pioneers' 12th WCHA regular-season title, and the first since 2005.
After a faceoff in the Mavericks' zone, Denver defenseman Patrick Wiercioch got the puck to the front of the net, where, after a bounce, it ended up on Rakhshani's stick with no opponent covering.
"We did have a play on, and it did fall apart," Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky said. "We wanted Patrick to get the puck to the net right away. . . . He shoveled a backhand toward the net front, and a split second later it winds up on Rhett's stick and Rhett buries it."
The last-second drama came after the Pioneers had built, and lost, a two-goal lead in the second period. With the Mavericks playing like anything but a ninth-place team, the Pioneers had to rely heavily on goaltender Marc Cheverie, who responded with 36 saves, extending Denver's win streak to 10.
The Pioneers face Colorado College in a home-and-home series next weekend to close out the regular season. DU Fans are encouraged to wear white clothing for tne "White Out."

"We did have a play on, and it did fall apart," Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky said. "We wanted Patrick to get the puck to the net right away. . . . He shoveled a backhand toward the net front, and a split second later it winds up on Rhett's stick and Rhett buries it."
The last-second drama came after the Pioneers had built, and lost, a two-goal lead in the second period. With the Mavericks playing like anything but a ninth-place team, the Pioneers had to rely heavily on goaltender Marc Cheverie, who responded with 36 saves, extending Denver's win streak to 10.
The Pioneers face Colorado College in a home-and-home series next weekend to close out the regular season. DU Fans are encouraged to wear white clothing for tne "White Out."
