Three DU Players Named 1st Team All-Americans

The University of Denver led the way with three first-team selections when the Division I men’s ice hockey All-Americans were announced Friday. Goaltender Marc Cheverie, forward Rhett Rakhshani and defenseman Patrick Wiercioch were named from the Pioneers.

New Hampshire had one East first-team choice and two so honored on the second team. Twenty different D-I programs are represented.

There are 14 players from the United States, eight from Canada, and two from Sweden. Seventeen players participated in the NCAA tournament. Three of them advanced to the Frozen Four, all from the West. The honorees include all 10 finalists for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award (see entire list).

The last time DU had 3 or more 1st Team All Americans was in 1961 when they had 5. In 1961 there were only First Teams for the East and West.

1961 West
GOALIE George Kirkwood - DU
DEFENSE Marty Howe - DU
DEFENSE Grant Munro - DU
FORWARD Red Berenson - Michigan
FORWARD Bill Masterton - DU
FORWARD Jerry Walker - DU

DU had 3 All Americans in 2005 but not all were on the West First Team. They also had four in 1986, again they were not all on the First Team. The only other time they had 3 West First Teamers was in 1960.

1960 West
GOALIE George Cuculick - MTU
DEFENSE Marty Howe - DU
DEFENSE George Konik - DU
FORWARD Paul Coppo - MTU
FORWARD Reg Morelli - UND
FORWARD Bill Masterton - DU
