Great way to start the season! A gutsy come from behind win for the Pios. They made some mistakes and it wasn't always pretty, but they kept battling. A few first game impressions:

1. Colborne looks poised for a big season. He looks stronger on the puck, tougher in the corners, and more confident than last season.
2. Rhett looks terrific. He's the guy to lead this team.
3. This team may take a few games to really gel. With so many newcomers getting significant playing time right away, on-ice chemistry might take a little while to develop.
4. As the season goes on DU's talented freshmen will get used to the speed of the game and realize what it takes to be successful. There is loads of potential with that group. I really like Drew Shore.
5. Matt Donovan has the makings of a star.
6. Chevy was not sharp tonight. The 3rd goal he let in was bad. He needs to be better.
7. The Pios fall down an awful lot. They need to do a better job keeping their feet.
8. Matt Glasser, the hardest working Pioneer, should get more playing time.
9. Vermont is no slouch. I don't know if they will be back in the FF, but they are big, physical, have some speed, and are tough. They outworked DU in sequences and were successul cycling the puck in sequences.

Great things happen when DU shoots the puck, follows up, takes chances, and embraces the ugly goals!!

Not one of the goals tonight came from passing the puck around the perimeter. I know Gwoz likes to play into a system, but every now and then you just have to trust your guys to make something happen. I remember talking with a guy my freshman year who had been coming to DU games for 35 years. He said he thought that Gwozdecky coaches the instinct out of his players, and I think it has some truth. When DU players step up and do what it takes to make things happen, and play more blue collar than white collar, it usually winds up being a goal. Or 5.

Go Pioneers!

Started watching when DU was down 4-2 but saw the Pios take over the game in the 3rd period. The Pios are scary good. Watched a portion of the Susie-Merrimac game. Not impressed with the Susies. Can't wait to see Minny tear them apart next weekend.

Great Win For The Pios!

That game was so back and forth, both teams really giving it their all... this is how hockey should be played and this is a good reason why college hockey is better to watch.

1st period I thought both teams were pretty even. 2nd period I think Vermont woke up and was defiantly showing why they made the Frozen Four last season. They were beating the hell out of us physically most of the game and really capitalizing on their chances. What changed the game was that game misconduct penalty for checking from behind. That was the momentum changer and DU just took over after that. I'm still shocked we ended up winning that. I was hoping for a tie after going down two but ended up getting way more out of that.

I'm loving the new throwback jerseys. I'll defiantly look into buying one tomorrow.

It's great to see Boone in the stands. Now if we could just make him the official mascot.

Was a good win tonight. You have to realize that, as Twister stated, UVM is very good. They have played together as a unit. We have a lot of new players that will contribute a lot, it will take time for it it to work more consistent, but you see the clear talent.

I disagree with the comment from Jordan that Gwoz coaches to much passing. (this sounds like what you hear a lot of DU and NHL games when fans yell "shoot" during a power play - need to know a little about playing the game), you have to pass some and then pull the trigger. We did pull the trigger a lot tonight, look a the shot advantage. Their keeper played well, Chevy needs to play better

All in all, great energy in the arena, a win to build on.

I'm mad that there's no tv tonight, bah humbug. I'm driving to the only place where I could watch it and it's not on. I blame FSNRM

Someone forgot to tell the University of Vermont that they are supposed to lay down at the feet of the #1 team in the country.

A character win for DU to be sure and a heck of an atmosphere at Magness Arena. You could feel the buzz before the game and the third period was epic.

Best things I saw in Magness last night.

1). No more German Technocrap after DU scores. Just the band cranking out "Rock & Roll-Part II"

2). 700 students at the game. Great turnout.

3). Lots of Boone sightings, Boone posters, d.u.g.s./Boone shirts and of course the mascot himself. People certainly seem to have embraced the "Outlaw Mascot" that was banned by the administration.

4). The band was excellent. They appear to be two to three times larger than in the past.

5). Seeing all the hooligans standing behind & around Section 18. Most fun place to watch a DU game.

6). Want to feel 20 years younger? Hang out with the students.

7). Less "piped in music." College sports is about bands, student sections, cheerleaders, mascots all at an reasonable price compared to pro sports. Colleges that stick to the formula sellout stadiums and arena.

8). Love the throwback unis. Everybody I spoke to said the same thing.

9). Great seeing all the Hockey Alums. Most often heard comment from the former players? "Wow the campus and buildings are amazing.

10). Heard that there in going to be a Boone cake at the Alumni Hockey Reception tonight. Think we can get the Chancellor to cut the cake?

dg, I wouldn't let Coombe anywhere near Boone with a knife in his hand. I fear where he might make the cut :-o

It's the debut of the Fury tonight.

I'll second the comments made about the environment last night--great atmosphere, festive crowd, and excellent student turnout. The pep band adds so much to the atmosphere--I wish they could be at every home game. Seeing Boone in person was very cool. It's great to have a mascot working the crowd. Finally, DU's uniforms were sweet! The red-on-red look was very cool.

Somebody on DU blocked a puck right near the final buzzer...?? Didn't see who it was... but he looked like he was in serious pain. Anybody know who? And is he OK?
