University of Denver defenseman Scott Mayfield, who contributed two assists, four hits and two blocked shots to help the Pioneers to a two-game home-ice sweep over league-leading and Minnesota last weekend, has been named Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week.

A 6-4, 200-pound freshman from St. Louis, Mo., and a draftee of the NHL's New York Islanders, Mayfield assisted on teammate Jason Zucker's game-winning power-play goal at 4:02 of the third period last Friday evening at Magness Arena as Denver collected a 5-3 victory over the Golden Gophers.

On Saturday night, Mayfield earned an assist on Nick Shore's third period tally that evened the game at 3-3 and catapulted DU on to a 4-3 overtime win. He quarterbacked Denver to a 3-for-10 effort on the power-play over the weekend and also fired four shots on goal.

As a rookie, Mayfield has seen action in 29 of the Pioneers' 30 games this season with eight points (2g, 6a).

He's shown great improvement. And he'll be a beast after some time in the weightroom. I really liked it that he wanted a piece of that chicken shit Rau on his way off the ice.

Mayfield is starting to "get it".

You can see in his play that the game has slowed down for him to the point that he is able to make the right decisions (most of the time) without thinking about it.

Reaching this threshold is critical for a young player...and doing so in his freshman year is an impressive feat. Mayfield can now spend the rest of his career at DU developing his game, instead of merely struggling to keep up.

Scott still needs to gain about 25 lbs of muscle, though.

Also, speaking of tall defensemen, John Lee played probably his best two games of the season last weekend.

Mayfield will be a good pro. He's skilled, tough, nasty and can skate very well for a big man. He needs to bulk up a bit and he'l be in the NHL for years.

His problem at the college level is that the refs don't really toleratre his style of play very well. He needs to continue to channel his nastiness into greater effectiveness.

Any word on TV coverage on the Wisc series?

TV question is complicated.

Both games are being televised.

Friday's game is live on FSN-Wisconsin's Alternate Channel, but I'm not finding it on the Channel Guide.

Saturday's game in on FSN-Wisconsin [DirecTV Channel #669].

My Direct TV channel guide shows the Friday game on channel 680-1 RSN alternate in HD. Saturday on channel 669 Fox Sports WI and 669-1 Fox Sports WI HD

Slow, steady improvement throughout the year. He has skills you can't teach and now that he's comfortable with the college game, look out. He's physical. He can skate and handle the puck far beyond his years. 30 games in there is nothing any of us has seen which indicates he won't be a force in the WCHL and solid professional when the times comes. Wait until next year when he comes back at 220-225 of additional muscle and brimming with confidence. Sorry DU, take advantage for the net year or two because the Isles won't be able to wait too long given their situation.
