Love The Jersey Poppers

(above) DU's two "Jersey Poppers" had a lot of fun on Saturday night in Magness Arena
"Apparently, the jersey pop has made its way to the Mile High City as both Jason Zucker and Scott Mayfield were jersey-popping after their goals Saturday. After the second one, Ben Blood went in for a word with Mayfield and that’s when the penalties started."
Some hockey purists may not be enamored with the art of "Jersey-Popping," but it was great to see Jason Zucker and Scott Mayfield showing pride in their Denver colors on Saturday night.

Both of these athletes could of played hockey for any school in the country.  They choose DU ... PioNation thanks you.

Jersey popping in your own barn? What the he## does that mean?... you're the home team....everybody knows who you are playing for.

I think Zucker and Mayfield should have watched HBO 24/7 this season... Claude Giroux tells Brayden Schenn.."Hey, we're not in the f---ing World Juniors here jumping in the glass, ok?"

With the general lack of hockey knowledge on this blog, it's not a suprise the DG would think that this is prety cool at this level of hockey.

Act like you've been there before.

I totally disagree.

This isn't the NHL. Let the kids have pride in their school in a sport where they ony play twice a week. As long as they aren't trying to show up the other team, who the hell cares?

Haha I could not have put it better myself...so I won't even try. Well played sir

Mayfield would eat Blood for breakfast!

North Dakota fans are going to lecture us on "class?"

Pass the popcorn.

Jersey-popping is the whole point of having spirit for your school in your own home barn - it's not a tax audit - it's a hockey game where share your joys with your teammates and fans in communual celebration.

Jersey-popping is just a little American school spirit. Enjoy it.

They were jersey popping because half the arena was full of ND fans....... at home!

There were popping because the DU fans have no faith...look at the posts after the Fri. night game.

They were popping because they were pissed off that their own fans don't support them thru thick and thin.

I'm sorry, but your fan base is pathetic for having a top notch D1 hockey program.

North Dakota fans and class...a true oxymoron.

For the ND fans that frequent this blog, you can Google the meaning of oxymoron.

Just trying to help our friends from the frozen tundra.

Our fan base is fine for who and where we are.

We're a very small private school of 5K undergrads in a highly oversaturated sports market. Our student body mostly comes from out of state, and many of them come from non-hockey places. Unlike UND, most students here did not grow up watching DU.

The city of Denver is a football town and DU hockey is about sport #15 on the local priority list - theere are 8 pro sports here and five larger public colleges within a 75 minute drive that splits up the state's allegiances.

We are quite lucky to have 10,000 people who care about DU Hockey.

We are not a state flagship school in a state where college hockey is the largest sports attraction (without any real competition).

UND might think out fans base is pathetic by their standards, but we keep things in perspective.

This is college hockey. The kids were jacked. The popping was great. I personally loved seeing it and it got a great reception from all of the group I was with.
All of you tight ass hole N.D. goons-loosen up,get a life.I realize that you have nothing else in N.D. but this hockey team but remember it's still just a bunch of college kids.

DU scored three goals in five minutes on Friday night and four goals in eight minutes on Saturday.

This team can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime - unless they grip the sticks like they did for 55 minutes on Friday night.

Play loosey-goosey, relax and have fun in the playoffs and they can hang #8 in the rafters.

And if they have to roll over UND again on the way to the title, all the better.

Completely agree with 4:05.

And to 4:01, I think the etiquette in the NHL is largely irrelevant for us fans and I don't give a shit what Claude Giroux tells Brayden Shenn about how he should celebrate in the NHL. I LOVE college hockey. I like the NHL. There's a lot of reasons why I like college better than the pros, but I think a big part of it is the pride the players have for their team colors and the pure excitement of players like Mayfield and Zucker after great moments. It was exactly how I felt after they scored. AWESOME!

DG's jersey is "popping" at the seams.

Ben Blood lecturing DU on hockey etiquette?

That's so rich - a guy stripped of his captain's letter by his own coach for attacking a player in post-game handshake line. Talk about hockey etiquette. Laughable.

Adding on to anon 4:42's very valid points...

The other thing that people from other locales tend to forget is that many of the students who choose DU do so largely because of its proximity to the mountains and the recreation that little quirk of geography affords.

Since the vast majority of undergrads at DU do not have classes on Fridays, keeping the kids in town on a weekend during the ski season...particularly when the week prior brought the first REAL snow of the season to the I-70 resorts...is next to impossible.

4:01...get your head out of your ass. DU players were excited. You're telling me the dipsh**s on your team don't do some celebrating as well after a big goal?? Get off your high horse, turd.

@ 5:16...

The sooner you accept the fact that...

As far as a great many Sioux fans are concerned, NOTHING a North Dakota player, coach, alum, fan or Nazi-sympathizing benefactor has EVER done could EVER be worthy of the slightest bit of condemnation...

the better.

Honestly, every DU series with UND feels like 6 games rather than 2.

So much violence, ejections, injuries. controversey, coaching explosions, referee implosion, etc.

Every year, I just hope our team makes it out alive.

PLaying 4 times a year will be both delicious and a horror show at the same time.

Mess with the bull, you get the horns. Mayfield would rip Blood apart and everyone knows it. Learn to think before you act, Ben. #2 ain't who you wanna be scrappin' wif' foo......

Props to Blood for successfully navigating the handhake line last Saturday.

Popping at the seams........that's some funny stuff. I haven't laughed that hard in quite some time.

BTW, no need to 'jersey pop' with a stolen name and image. The Sioux don't even own the Sioux name so maybe they are embarrassed?

In post season with NCAA sanctions it will be fun to see what the UND jersey's say. Can I suggest "for rent",'On Parole', or 'I'm with him - Stupid".

Twister said...

Funny stuff. No surprise that this story has generated some buzz between both fan bases. The jersey popping is sort of juvenile, but so what. DU's players were excited to score some huge goals against an arch rival. Not a big deal.

On another note, I'm curious what other DU fans think of MacWilliam's hit on Tabrum? I've watched the replay several times and think it was a bad call. Maybe MacWilliam deserved two minutes for a high hit, but it was not a hit to the head. Tabrum landed a bit awkwardly against the boards, but I thought it was a clean hit. Hard, but clean.

Anonymous said...

Glad I could make someone laugh. The back and forth between the fans of both programs gets old, but that joke was.sitting on a tee just waiting to be hit out of the park.

Ring_of_Fire said...

@ Twister...

If you read the rule strictly, contact to the head was the correct call.

MacWilliam's shoulder undoubtedly made immediate and unimpeded contact with Tabrum's head and he did follow through high. The shoulder didn't hit anywhere on Tabrum's body and then "ride up" onto the head, which during a shoulder check, is the main mitigating factor in the contact to the head rule.

That said, upon watching it again, I can't say that any contact to the head was intentional. Meaning, I don't think he "tried" to head hunt.

But he didn't try NOT to hit the head, either. And that, in the end, was what got MacWilliam thrown out of the game.

From the NCAA Rules Committee commentary surrounding the new contact to the head rule: "the responsibility remains with the player making the hit to avoid contact with the head and neck area of an opposing player."

MacWilliam could have come in low and delivered a hip check and sent Tabrum ass-over-teakettle and it wouldn't have drawn a penalty...but he didn't.

IMHO, the refs got it right.

Im tired of the no class DU hockey goons who always go after our NHL playeers. Tabrums hit from behind on blood, then after DU scores and jersey pops that little runt Lelaglia goes after blood. Tab's and Lelag's should have great careers in the ECHL. but to try and take out NHL calliber players? No class

Anonymous said...

LOL @ 10:20

Blood started chit on Saturday, punching LaLeggia in the back of the head and being in the middle of a goal celebration. LaLeggia retaliated and got a penalty -- after Blood came after him, not the other way around. You are a dipshit.

Anonymous said...

Once again, Sioux fans prove that they are uninformed and consistently clueless. Flame on UND, flame on.

Head butting in hockey has no place . Maybe in the ECHL where the little guy will have a nice career

First, anonymous knuckledragger, glad you can read. Second, congratulations on having electricity to power your zero-net. Third, glad your snot green gladiators have a sycophant like you licking their taints. The NHL is a perfect place for them-they are not students-they are human-like turds in pads. I would guess the UND locker room has a glory hole that you can cuddle up to. Be sure to bring some wipes because you’ll need ‘em...

Watch the video. There was no head butt by Laleggia.

Anderson thought he saw one and called it, but the video tells a different story,

2:48 is correct.

FWIW, 10:20 is only a troll trying to get a reaction by saying stupid shit. He doesn't really believe what he is saying.

Never seen a player in their home barn jersey pump. Never! DU celebrated like they won the title on Sat after getting worked by a rebuilding UND team in a "down" year. I guess it's a compliment to UND and the UND fans that packed their barn. Only if the student's had that type of passion! I hope we get to end your season again this year.
