Former DU Recruit Tyler Pham Heads To West Point

Monty continues to juggle the incoming recruiting classes as a third recruit in recent weeks falls off the DU recruiting radar.  Tyler Pham originally committed to the University of Denver in November 2009 as a 15 year-old.  Despite several seasons in the USHL, Pham's stats and his stature never reached the levels necessary to become a bona fide D-1 hockey player.

Pham recently tweeted that he will attend West Point.

Landon Smith and Cody Depourcq recently decommitted as well.

Coach Montgomery is looking for players that will fit his system and it appears, these three recruits won't fit his style of play.

Congrats to Pham. Attending West Point is an incredible opportunity. He must be a special kid.

From what I understand, a more accurate statement would be that Landon Smith and Cody Depourcq "were decommitted" from DU - i.e., after being told that their future places on the team were no-longer assured, they were encouraged by Montgomery to look for other opportunities.

However it went down, this is not an uncommon occurrence in the several years following a coaching change...particularly when you have kids as young as 15 committing to a program.

Definite kudos to Pham, though. Securing an appointment to a service academy is an honor reserved to a very select few. I wish him much success both in college hockey and in his future service of our country.

I echo your congratulations to Tyler Pham on his appointment to West Point.

Monty might want to keep contact with Landon Smith in 26games in the BCHL he is 20-19-39. A break out year after 2 so-so years in the USHL. And he is from Denver.

I think the Landon Smith ship has sailed.

Maybe he'll end up at Colorado College.

Not knowing any background on Landon Smith, it does seem odd that he wouldn't be a fit at DU. Local kid and last I heard he is the leading scorer in the BCHL--what's missing? I talked to a source here in Denver who knows his family and said he is a super kid from a great family. Seems strange he is no longer in the mix.
