Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the BU men’s hockey team, was arrested early Sunday morning by the Boston University Police and charged with sexual assault. BU Police Chief Thomas Robbins says his department is working with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, which is investigating the allegations. Nicastro is accused of sexual assault by a female student on campus. He is being held on $25,000 cash bail, and will be arraigned in Brighton District Court on Tuesday.

Michael Lynch, BU athletic director, says Nicastro has been suspended from the hockey team pending the outcome of the investigation.

Nicastro, a junior, becomes the second Terrier to be arrested for sexual assault this season. Corey Trivino was arrested on Dec. 11 and was subsequently dismissed from the team.

According to Boston.com, other than Nicastro and Trivino, fewer than five of BU’s 33,000 students this academic year have faced charges related to sexual assault, according to a school official. The hockey team appears to be cornering the market on sexual assault along the Charles River.

Charlie Coyle, a Minnesota Wild prospect, quit the BU hockey team five days after Trivino’s arrest, saying he was “done being a student-athlete’’ and wanted to focus fully on hockey.

The rape charge carries a 20 year sentence if convicted.

Jack Parker could be on the hotseat with two similar incidents within 10 weeks of each other.

There seems to be a real issue in recruiting character hockey players to BU these days.

I really respect BU and Parker, but it's time there was a culture change there in the way they recruit and develop the character of their athletes.

I realize that coaches can't control their athletes 24/7, but it sounds like the inmates are running the asylum up in Boston.

We were all a little slow to appreciate the significance of BU hiring Marcellus Wallace as an assistant coach.
