New NCHC Commissioner Introduced To Media

Jim Scherr, the former head of the U.S. Olympic Committee was introduced as commissioner of the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Wednesday.  Scherr signed a 4 1/2 year contract with a base salary of $150,000 that will take him through the 2015-16 hockey season. His contract also includes the possibility for bonuses.

The new league will include the University of Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, St. Cloud State & Western Michigan.

Scherr said one of his first tasks will be to help solidify media platforms for the league. The NCHC will soon announce its first television contract. The Grand Forks Herald reported it will be with the CBS Sports Network and it will include around 16 telecasts per season.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, former U.S. Olympic Committee chief executive officer Jim Scherr has been selected as the first commissioner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Scherr resigned abruptly from the USOC in 2009 after a series of layoff and staff reductions.  He led the USOC for six years during which time the USA won a record number of medals in the Beijing Olympic Games and doubling of USA athletes' compensation and aid.

He wrestled for the USA in the 1988 Seoul Olympics finishing 5th.
