Mannino Named Finalist for Michigan's Best

DENVER - University of Denver sophomore goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is one of 22 finalists for "Michigan's Best," it was announced this week by the Detroit Free Press. The annual award honors the state's top sports figure from 2005.

Mannino was named the 2005 Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player after helping the Pioneers to back-to-back NCAA National Championships last April. He stopped a career-high 44 shots in Denver's 4-1 victory over North Dakota in the championship game. Mannino posted five shutouts and finished the season with an 18-4-1 record, 2.19 GAA and .927 Sv%. He set DU records with three consecutive shutouts and a scoreless streak of 208 minutes and 42 seconds. In 15 games this season, Mannino is 9-5-0 with a 2.42 GAA and .911 Sv%.

Mannino is joined on the list by Colorado native Chauncey Billups (Detroit Pistons), Brendan Shanahan (Detroit Red Wings) and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (professional boxer). Other nominees include: Ryan Bertin, Anna Garina, Kristin Haynie, Carol Hutchins, Greg Jennings, Chuck Martin, Joanne P. McCallie, Michael McFadden, Brent Metcalf, Lela Nelson, Dan Priestley, Jennie Ritter, Mary Jo Sanders, Deanne Scanlon, Melissa Sneller, Peter Vanderkaay, Becky Weima and Mandi Zemba.
