.
Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez may want to reconsider that pay raise he gave Mike Eaves in the offseason. Its becoming obvious that the Cow Tippers from Madison are no match for your Mighty Pioneers. The last 20 games have yielded a 15-3-2 record for DU and the pattern has remained pretty consistent. Get the lead, rely on goaltendeing and win by the narrowest of margins.
.
Peter Mannino stopped 34-of-35 shots to outduel Wisconsin's Brian Elliott, as the Denver Pioneers recorded a 3-1 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. Denver received power-play goals from freshman Tyler Ruegsegger, sophomore Chris Butler and junior Ryan Dingle as the Pioneers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games. With the victory, DU moves to 15-6-2.
.
"Peter Mannino continues to be tremendous and our power play functioned pretty well tonight," said Denver Head Coach George Gwozdecky. "But as we've said a number of times this year, we have a lot left in the tank and a lot left to give. I don't think that performance was even close to what we're capable of."
.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead on Ruegsegger's power-play tally 2:57 into the game. Ruegsegger controlled the puck at the left faceoff dot and put a perfectly placed wrist shot over the left shoulder of Elliott, who was screened by Geoff Paukovich.
.
Butler's power-play tally gave DU a 2-0 advantage at the 15:47 mark. One second after a DU 5-on-3 advantage had ended, and with Wisconsin still a man down, Butler rifled a wrist shot past Elliott to the glove side from between the faceoff circles.
.
Mannino made several stellar saves in the middle frame, including a sprawling kick save at 8:08 and a stop on a point-blank attempt by Andrew Joudrey at 13:47. However, Jeff Likens finally solved the Denver netminder at 17:36 when he buried a feed from Michael Davies on the power play to cut the Pioneers' lead in half after two periods.
.
In a crucial sequence during the third period, Wisconsin's John Mitchell was sent to the penalty box with a five-minute major for kneeing. DU capitalized less than a minute into the power play when Dingle scored on a second effort at 14:03. Elliott made a diving stop on the first shot, but Dingle was able to shelve his second attempt to give the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage and secure the victory.
Notes: DU is now 6-0-1 in its last seven games ... Dingle ranks first in the WCHA with 17 goals, while Rakhshani moved into a tie for second-place in the conference with 19 assists ... The Pioneers have been out shot in three of their last four games, but hold a 4-0-0 record during that time ... DU has limited opponents to three goals or less in 18 of the last 19 games ... Tonight marked the 46th consecutive sellout at Magness Arena.
