The recent supensions of two University of Nebraska-Omaha hockey players, arrested on suspicion of public intoxication Sunday night were not the first alcohol incidents within the UNO Athletic Department this year.

Senior Bobby Henderson, 24, and sophomore Adam Bartholomay, 23, neither of whom practiced with the team Monday, won't suit up for the Mavs again in 2006-07, UNO coach Mike Kemp said.

Four people ticketed in death of a UNO volleyball player

Last May 31, UNO vollyball player Shelly Thompson, 18, died from injuries sustained when she fell out of her boyfriend's car while leaving a party near Lincoln.

Boyfriend Daniel Deaver, 19, was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol and for driving with a blood-alcohol content above the 0.02 percent limit set for minors.

Investigators said after Thompson fell, Deaver took her to her parents' house, and they immediately decided she needed medical care. She was taken to a hospital from near home. Investigators said the pair were traveling at about 25 mph, and they may have been arguing right before the incident.

"We do not know if she jumped out or fell out," said Bill Jarrett, of the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department.

Christopher Thompson, 25, and Ann Beckman, also 25, were later ticketed on June 5 and the third, Tracey Foreman, 44, was ticketed on June 16. Thompson, no relation to the deceased, was cited for suspicion of supplying alcohol to a minor and Beckman was cited for suspicion of aiding and abetting the purchase.

Four Hockey Players Suspended

In November, Nebraska-Omaha sophomore goaltender Jerad Kaufmann was among four hockey players suspended by coach Mike Kemp for a "violation of team rules," and the suspension will last at least through this weekend.

The other suspended players were junior forward Mick Lawrence, junior forward Bill Bagron, and freshman forward Chris Wilson.
.
Kemp told the Omaha World Herald that the players were suspended for drinking alcohol during the team's recent trip to Oxford, Ohio, to play Miami. All but Wilson is of legal drinking age. Kemp also told the paper that the length of the suspensions could vary.

It appears that there is less to do in Omaha than there is in Grand Forks.

These are the kind of incidents that cost coaches, AD's & School Presidents their jobs.

And for a young person to die under these circumstances is tragic beyond description.

Makes you wonder what might of happened if the hockey players drove home in that condition.
