Hobey Baker Award Handed OutDespite the fact that North Dakota lost to BC the night before, the Sioux Nation turned out in droves for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award ceremony. The UND band trumpeted louder (Howard Jones’ “It Can Only Get Better”) with the prescient knowledge that their own Ryan Duncan would beat out Air Force’s Eric Ehn and Notre Dame’s goalie David Brown for the 30-pound trophy. And, without a drum roll, he did.
.Duncan, in classic Hobey Baker style, deferred to his teammates and the fellow Hobey-contestants, saying, “I’m not sure I am the most deserving candidate.”
.Duncan, despite his humility, was very deserving of the award (even if ESPN added two inches to him, announcing him at 5-foot-8 instead of 5-foot-6)…
Eric Ehn, who was the first ever military school candidate for the Hobey, said he choose the Air Force Academy, in large part, because of the full dental coverage they offered. That is not a misprint: AFA’s bargaining chip for a hockey player to sign on (and all but forego any chance of turning pro with a five-year commitment to the forces after his athletic career concludes) — dental coverage.
