Illinois Defenseman Will Enroll In 2009

Heisenberg's Site, USHR & Western College Hockey Blog are reporting that DU received a "verbal commitment" from Paul Phillips. Phillips, a 15-year old native of Darien, Illinois, skated for the Chicago Chill midget program last season. Darien is a suburb of Chicago.

Phillips is a defenseman and reportedly was invited to tryout with the USNDP earlier this season. Playing for the Chicago Chill last season against players that were up to three years older, he tallied 12 points in 26 games, including four power play goals.

Phillips will play for Cedar Rapids in the USHL for the next two seasons and will enroll at DU in 2009. At Cedar Rapids, he will be a defensive teammate of DU's Oklahoman Recruit Matt Donovan.

Phillips joins Donovan and Nate Dewhurst as probable 2009 recruits.

Hope he's a good player. But I must say I find the whole idea of 15 year olds committing to colleges repulsive, and just as repulsive is the colleges having to chase after them. But as hockey fans, we live with a very competitive Canadian Junior system that is after the same kids.

I agree with you Swami about 15-year olds committing to colleges. This would be a moot point if major junior players from Canada could play for US colleges if they wanted to change their path. Nowadays top players have to decide which path to take early on and if they choose the Canadian major junior path that is the only road they can take.

Personally, my oldest son did not make a final decision on what college to attend until May of his senior year. He is not attending school on an athletic scholarship but did have a tough time narrowing down his final choices. My 16-year old son, who will be a junior in HS, just has a general idea of where he may want to go. It changes all the time. Not an esay task for a teenager to select a college and go through the admissions process.

Let's hope that Phillips is more honest and forth right than what's his name.

No argument with the idea of 15 year ols committing but unfortunately it is the game we are forced to play. Recrruting is hardly an exact science and grabbing 15 year olds makes it even a bigger crap shoot.

It probably goes both ways. By knowing that he has a spot at DU, if all goes according to plan, he can focus on his schoolwork and hockey development and not worry about his stats.

Really to good to see DU grab a nice recruit in Notre Dame & Wisconsin's backyard.

I have watched him play a couple years now and he is a grinder who gets after the puck in the corners and makes smart decisions with the puck. He will be a real asset to this team.
