DU Opens With An Exhibition Against Calgary

When the University of Denver kicks off its much awaited hockey season on Sunday night, they will face a battle tested University of Calgary team that is off to a 4-1-0 start.

Glancing at the Calgary roster, at least 12 team members played Major Junior hockey up in Canada and would be ineligible to play for any U.S. college because the league is considered professional by the NCAA. Three more players last played in the ECHL which is the minor league that J.D. Corbin and Glenn Fisher will begin their professional careers this season.

Keeping in mind that DU has up to 12 Freshman that might see some ice time Sunday night and a logjam of players are competing for the sixth defensive position, things could get dicey for Peter Mannino and Marc Cheverie in goal.

The word out of Magness Arena is that DU is taking this game very seriously and aren't expecting the usual walkover victory that we've seen in past seasons in the opener.

The "unofficial" LetsGoDU predicted lineup
(We've been wrong before and we're probably wrong here, but you gotta take a stab at it)

Offense
Rakhshani - Ruegsegger - Trotter
Ostrow - Bozak - Gifford
May - Maiani - Martin
Jackson - Glasser - Vossberg
(sub) Cunningham

Defense
Thomas - Mullen
Butler - Brookwell
Testwuide - Marcuzzi
(subs) Cook, Brehm, Nutini, Ryder
(In The Doghouse) Blom

Goaltenders
Mannino
(sub) Cheverie

I counted 11 players over 200 lbs on the Calgary roster, so DU had better be quick. Those are some pretty big dudes.
