Maiani Leads DU In Exhibition Win

Freshmen Sensational In 5-1 Victory

DENVERFreshman Anthony Maiani tallied one goal and two assists to lead the University of Denver Pioneers to a 5-1 win over Calgary in exhibition action tonight before 5,103 fans at Magness Arena.


Brock Trotter, Rhett Rakhshani, Tyler Bozak and Kyle Ostrow added goals for the Pioneers, who improved to 12-1 in exhibition action under 14-year head coach George Gwozdecky.


Peter Mannino earned the win for DU with 12 saves as the Pioneers outshot the Dinos, 43-23. Freshman Marc Cheverie stopped 10 of 11 shots in relief of Mannino. Chris Nutini added two assists. The Pioneers went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Calgary was 1-for-3. Andre Blanchette scored the lone goal for Calgary with six minutes remaining in the game.

The Pioneers open the regular season at home against Maine on Oct. 12-13. The series marks a rematch of the teams that battled for the 2004 NCAA National Championship. The Pioneers defeated the Black Bears 1-0 for their sixth NCAA title.
