The University of Denver hockey team will make its first road trip of the season this week and it will be an exciting one as they travel to historic Notre Dame. The games take place Thursday and Friday nights, with both starting at 5:30 MST. The Fighting Irish finished last season with a 32-7-3 record and lost to eventual champion Michigan State in the Midwest Regional Championship. Notre Dame won its first CCHA title last season and were ranked No. 1 in the country multiple times.
"Notre Dame was one of the top teams in the country last year. They will be one of the top teams in the CCHA and country this year," said Head Coach George Gwozdecky.
This season, the Fighting Irish started with a 4-1 loss to Wisconsin in the Lefty McFadden Invitational and followed with a 4-0 victory over Mercyhurst in Dayton, Ohio.
Notre Dame is led by sophomore defensemen Kyle Lawson, picked to be a first team CCHA pre-season selection. On the second team is junior right wing Erik Condra and linemate Ryan Thang.
The Fighting Irish were selected third in the pre-season CCHA poll, behind Michigan State and Miami (Ohio).
"It gives us another opportunity to compete against a another top team in the country. We couldn't ask for more. It will be in a very difficult environment," said Gwozdecky.
Senior goaltender Peter Mannino from Farmington Hills, Mich. is excited about playing close to home. "Being from that area and growing up with the CCHA, it is going to be exciting going back," Mannino said. "Notre Dame has a lot of history in any sport. It is going to be a lot of fun to go there."
This will be a rare road trip because DU will not travel home until two days after they finish game. The whole team will attend the Notre Dame vs. USC football game on Saturday.
"A lot of these guys have never ever seen a college football game live. It may be the only game they ever see live and even more importantly at a tradition that surrounds Notre Dame football," said Gwozdecky.
DU is 33-9-3 all-time against the Fighting Irish and last played Notre Dame Oct. 22, 2005 when Denver won 6-3 at home.
Mannino will most likely play both games in goal this week and sophomore Rhett Rakhshani could make his season debut this weekend after missing the series against Maine with a concussion.
