COLORADO SPRINGS – Chad Rau netted his first career hat trick and freshman goaltender Richard Bachman stopped 28 shots to lead No. 4 Colorado College to a 5-1 victory over the No. 3 Denver Pioneers tonight before 7,750 fans at World Arena. The WCHA-leading Tigers improve to 8-3 overall and 8-1 in the league play, while the Pioneers fall to 8-3, 5-2.
Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba) tallied DU’s lone goal, while senior goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) stopped 25 shots in the loss. Nate Prosser added a goal and an assist and Scott Thauwald and Jimmy Kilpatrick added two assists each for the Tigers, who extended their winning streak to six games.
Cody Lampl gave CC a 1-0 lead at 5:33 of the first period. Trotter tied it for DU at 11:00 when he banged in his own rebound from the low slot. Rau made it 2-1 when he slid home a big rebound off the glass behind the net at 16:16. Mannino kept the score close for the Pioneers, who were outshot 9-5 by the Tigers in the period.
Rau made it 3-1 with his second goal of the game with 20 seconds left in the second period. DU outshot CC 13-12 in the period, but failed on both power-play opportunities.
Rau completed the hat trick at 5:42 of the third period and Prosser made it 5-1 at 8:59. CC outshot DU, 30-29, in the game and converted 1-of-5 power plays. DU went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The teams play game two of the home-and-home series tomorrow night at DU’s Magness Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.

Notes: DU’s season-high four-game winning streak ends with the loss. Freshman Tyler Bozak extended his point streak to five games with an assist. The Pioneers are 0-4-2 in their last six games against the Tigers. Peter Mannino has allowed three or more goals in all three DU losses. The Pioneers are 6-3 against ranked opponents.
