YouTube Video Of Ruegsegger's Goal
University of Denver senior goalie Peter Mannino allowed just one goal in two games to spearhead the Pioneers' weekend sweep over Minnesota State.
In Saturday's series finale, a 7-0 rout before an announced crowd 6,037 at Magness Arena, Mannino collected his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career with a 28-save effort.
He also had two assists. Yet, Mannino wasn't the game's No. 1 star. Sophomore center Tyler Ruegsegger collected that honor for producing two highlight-reel goals, an assist, at least five blocked shots and several big hits.
In addition to his postgame curtain call, the Lakewood native received the construction helmet DU coach George Gwozdecky gives to his hardest-working player.
Mannino (1.31 goals-against average, .949 save percentage) happily was the No. 2 star.
"He's a great player and he proves it every night with his work ethic," Mannino said of Ruegsegger. "Tonight, he's absolutely deserving, and I got an assist on one of his goals, so I'm happy about that."
The sweep made No. 4-ranked DU 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association heading into next weekend's home-and-home showdown with No. 7 Colorado College (7-3, 7-1). Both teams have thrived despite playing many of the best teams in the country.
The Tigers have yet to play an unranked foe, and Minnesota State (3-6-1, 1-6-1 WCHA) was DU's first.
Back to Ruegsegger. After freshman Dustin Jackson and junior Patrick Mullen scored in the first six minutes of the game, Ruegsegger made it 3-0 at 13:07 with a shorthanded tally that will likely be available on YouTube. He took a pass from sophomore Brock Trotter at the Mavericks' blue line and embarrassed defenseman Kurt Davis before snapping the puck through the legs of goalie Dan Tormey.
Ruegsegger put the puck through Davis' skates twice before sailing in on the breakaway. He made it 4-0 early in the second period by making a similar move to produce DU's only power-play goal.
"They walked around our guys," Minnesota State coach Troy Jutting said of the Pioneers, who have won four in a row. "I don't think in (my) eight years I've seen our guys get beat 1-on-1 like tonight."
Said the modest Ruegsegger: "I was lucky enough to put a couple pucks on net."
Trotter and freshmen Jesse Martin and Tyler Bozak also scored for DU, which won 2-1 on Friday and led 6-0 after two periods Saturday. Trotter and junior defenseman Chris Butler led the team with a plus-4 rating in Game 2.
"It's very gratifying and very pleasing to me to see how our team played once we took the lead," Gwozdecky said. "We didn't get selfish. We didn't get complacent. We didn't start reserving our energy and efforts. We won all three periods."

DG,
Is there any video of the highlight reel goals from Sat nite? I was at Magness and man- they were sure purdy!!
We're working on trying to get the video on YouTube. We've asked DU for help and there is a highlight show on Pioneer Vision, but we don't have it yet.
Hopefully soon, because I haven't seen it either.
