Colorado College coach Scott Owens believes it does not really matter what the stakes are when the Tigers square off against the University of Denver, and he probably is right.
So intense is the rivalry, the action likely would be just as heated if the teams met late at night in an empty arena as it would if they battled in the Frozen Four, as they did in 2005.
Nevertheless, adding a dose of league standings intrigue to this week's home-and-home regular- season finale between the longtime rivals surely will make the showdown one of the marquee series of the college hockey season.
North Dakota's overtime win Sunday at Minnesota Duluth keeps the pressure on Colorado College in the race for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's MacNaughton Cup. The Fighting Sioux trail the Tigers by two points and lead third-place DU by four points.
The series begins Friday at Magness Arena and continues Saturday at World Arena in Colorado Springs.
"I don't think it matters. I think it's going to be the same intensity for the most part," Owens said. "I don't think it's going to be ratcheted up another notch."
