Has Mannino Played Last Hockey Game?

(above) Denver goalie Peter Mannino keeps his eye on the puck as Wisconsin's Michael Davies tries to maneuver during the second period last night

Its a flimsy, anonymous internet rumor left on the most unreliable of blogs; ours. But someone is claiming that Denver Senior Peter Mannino will finish his degree at DU and pursue another career.
.
Mannino was the last player off the ice on Saturday night and certainly looked to be disappointed in a playoff loss to the Badgers that ended Denver's season. However he was as he slowly skated towards the tunnel, he was enthusiastically cheered by the small contingent of DU fans that recognized one of the greatest Pioneer goaltenders to ever wear the Crimson & Gold.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post doubts the rumor is true, having spoken to Mannino about his future, as recently as a few weeks ago. LetsGoDU on the otherhand, sees smoke and where there's smoke, there's an unconfirmed rumor that drives up our visitor count.

Apparently this may be Mannino's last ever hockey game. There are rumors he has turned down several AHL and ECHL offers to graduate and pursue another career.

He should choose another career. He can't stop a break away to save his life. Does he get to keep the lemone now? That should be a good award for the biggest hack in the WCHA.

That "hack" won a national title as freshman, FF MVP, Broadmoor, all league recognition etc. Wherever he goes or whatever he does he'll be successful.

10:12....you are quite a genius. Go back to your cave, jackass.

Anonymous hack. How many games have you played. You were truly born stupid and never got any better. I will bet your family is so proud of you.

Anon 10:12,

Your post speaks volumes about your hockey knowledge, or lack thereof. Sad.

Seriously does he get to keep the lemone?

Manno's only weakness (albeit a big one) is his rebounds- he kicks them straight out 20 feet in front of him. He's an emotional goalie too, once he's cracked he's wide open. But when he's on his game, he's unstoppable.

If he's on track to graduate this June, he could just be looking to finish his degree and sign a two-way deal this summer instead of playing just a few more games this season. He may just need some time to decompress after a long, tough season on him mentally...

I really hope that's not the case for his sake. But, I also heard that same thing from someone at the bar yesterday afternoon while watching the game. Don't know how reliable any of this is. If so, good luck Manno great career and if you do sign the Rangers need some goaltending help in the minors. Zaba isn't cutting it.

Best of luck to Peter whatever he decides to do in the future! He's a great guy and we've enjoyed watching him play from juniors through college.

What's the word on this kid Adam Murray who has committed to DU as a netminder? I know it looked like he wouldn't join the team until '09, but any chance a good season in juniors might have changed that?

Gwoz has already stated that Marc Cheverie will be the goalie next season.

Mannino to the Rangers??? Not bad, any team he plays for it will probably take him 2-3 seasons before he'd really be ready for the NHL.

Either case I hope things for well for him and I look forward to seeing him play hockey in the future if that's what he decides to do.

Well we're going in now with unproven goaltending starting from this point on. The Frozen Four era has not ended. I hope Marc Cheverie is ready and up to the task.

While the '57 Chevy will be manning the nets for the Pioneers next season, I was told that we'll see Lars Paulgaard get some starts for the Pioneers as well.

Paulgaard spent the season practicing with the team and is reportedly very popular with his teammates.

DU recruit Adam Murray played with the USNDP under 17 team and will arrive in 2009.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Murray get red-shirted his frosh year if Paulgaard is a competent backup to Chevy

Talk about sandbagging. Set expectations low, so if/when Mannino actually makes a few ECHL saves, everyone will be singing his praises. He probably posted that rumor himself. :)

You Mannino haters are hilarious. You turds reek of insecurity and jealousy. You're the types who pimp out your Honda Civics to be cool. Losers.

Well... at least he didn't graduate from CC. So he is still a good guy in my book.

acshdu17, even if the mannino went to rangers they still wouldn't make the playoffs. Why? Because they are the Rangers.

If Peter decides to hang up the skates after his DU career, he wouldn't be DU's first outstanding goalie to do it. All American Ernie Glanville called it a career after beating CC 4-3 on March 15, 1978. Ernie turned down a very nice offer from Emile Francis and the St. Louis Blues to pursue a business career. He knew that he would probably have to bang around the minors, ride buses for a few years and the Blues had Mike Liut in front of him. He decided to put his diploma to work and the last time I spoke to him he never regretted doing it.

Perhaps Manny would have a decent pro career and perhaps not. Unfortunately the road is littered with players who were studs in college and who languish and hang on in the lower levels of the pros, often avoiding reality. Kudos to Manny if he has determined that this is as far as he wants to take it. He has reached the pinnacle twice during his college career which is much much more than most players can even dream of. Also makes sense if you want to get your career in the real world established - use your name and contacts while you are still on people's minds and not 5 years down the road when people won't remember you as well.

jeruwan,

that wasn't my post i was suggesting that zaba be replaced in the rangers minor league system by mannino. also, look for a red wings first round exit.

also the average salary for a ECHL player per week is $450. I think anybody could and would want to do better than that.

I heard Gwozdecky was retiring this summer

Gwoz isn't retiring you dumbazz.

The Mannino rumor is compelling on a lot of levels. Besides being one of DU's greatest players, he's obviously got strength of character thats unrivaled.

On the otherhand, if the rumors not true then I'm a dumbazz. :-)
