DU Seniors Leave Mighty Legacy

(left) DU's Senior class won the 2005 National Championship in Columbus starting four Freshman against the Fighting Sioux

As DU's senior class skated off the ice at the Kohl Center for the last time Saturday night, they left behind a trophy case that is unmatched in the WCHA over the past four seasons. The tally includes one National Championship, one MacNaughton regular season championship and two Broadmoor Trophies for winning the Final 5.

Andrew Thomas, Peter Mannino, Tom May and Zach Blom not only collected hardware but were leaders on campus, admired by students, fans and alumni alike. They now become one of a select group of DU hockey alums who have won a National Championship. There is no doubt they have left the DU hockey program in better shape than when they arrived on campus in the Fall of 2004. So while we'll miss their poise and class on the ice, they'll join hundreds of DU hockey alums as graduates of one of the most prestigious hockey programs in the country.

So long, but not goodbye. We'll see you at reunions, Frozen Fours and and at the Magness Arena in the future. A sincere thank you from Pioneer Nation.

WCHA Trophies In The Past Four Seasons
Denver: 1 National Championship, 1 MacNaughton, 2 Broadmoors
Wisconsin: 1 National Championship
Minnesota: 2 MacNaughtons, 1 Broadmoor
Colorado College: 2 MacNaughtons
North Dakota: 1 Broadmoor

Playing an intercollegiate sport for 4 years is a major undertaking in terms of effort, emotion, and obviously time. Thanks to the seniors--they were small in number but great in terms of contribution. Best of luck to these guys in whatever they do, hockey-related or otherwise.

Amen, good luck to this class as they leave a great legacy to follow. To whatever path they follow, best of luck, they'll always be Pioneers in my book.

First things first. Sorry for omitting Tom May's name yesterday. Thanks to those of you who caught the error. The post was written in a coffee shop in Madison. Thanks especially, to our Quality Control Coordinator who edited the article last night while was I was traveling.

Anon,

You're not in the minority and you raise a good point that I'll try and get to later today. That recruiting class of our current Seniors plus Paukovich, Stastny & Dingle was amazing.

It just that its a slightly different issue. The Seniors stuck it out at DU and contributed both on and off the ice. Blom at the Clarion, Mannino with the Boone issue, May with his play on the ice and Thomas with his captaincy.

Certainly we can make a case that Paul Stastny has done an amazing job of promoting DU this year with two NHL interviews that prominently feature is college experiences. Hopefully we can get those interviews onto YouTube for all to see.
