Coach Gwozdecky Fielded Questions On Live Chat

University of Denver head coach George Gwozdecky was featured in the second installment of the "Pioneer Chats" on Wednesday.

Fans joined the online chat by visiting www.DenverPioneers.com. College hockey fans from all over the country asked a variety of questions and the coach even cracked a joke, although it appears that not all got it.

Moderator - DU head coach George Gwozdecky and the Pioneers face North Dakota at the WCHA Final Five on Friday. Thanks coach for taking time to answer some questions.

Gwozdecky - Thank you. I am happy to be here to answer questions from our fans.

Cody, Lakewood - Is North Dakota a tough semi finals match-up for DU or can the Pioneers make it into the finals?

Gwozdecky - North Dakota is one of the top teams in our conference and in the country. They are an excellent opponent and will give us the kind of challenge we need.

GOON, G.F, ND - How are you guys planning on getting the puck past JP lameroux? He is the nations best goalie.

Gwozdecky - Whenever you face a great goaltender you must do everything you can to make it difficult for him to see the puck. Traffic in front of the net is critical for success.

dg, Houston - Thanks for taking our questions. Which players do you think have to step up for DU this weekend at the Final Five?

Gwozdecky - Toga Man, thanks for your continual support of DU hockey. We have been receiving great efforts from different players throughout the 2nd half. This will have to continue vs UND.

PCM, Grand Forks - Who is your pick for the player of the year award thorughout the WCHA or your top 5?

Gwozdecky - There are four WCHA players that I feel have had outstanding seasons and could be MVP of Year winners; J.P. Lamoureux, Richard Bachman, T.J. Oshie and Chad Rau.

Kenny, Denver - What did the Pioneers learn from earlier defeats to UND this season that could help in this Friday's game?

Gwozdecky - In our recent series at Grand Forks we learned how quick and dynamic UND's offense is and how fast they can create a scoring opportunity from a turnover.

R. Brown, Lakewood - Any chance Brian Gifford will play this weekend?

Gwozdecky - Brian will not play this weekend. We are projecting that he will be available to play for the NCAA Regionals.

S. Mason:Hls Ranch : - Any preference on which regional you'd like to see your team in?

Gwozdecky - We really do not have a preference. It has been three years since we played in the NCAA Tournament and we are very excited to have that opportunity once again.

Julie, Fort Collins - Who will be the starting goalie next year?

Gwozdecky - Freshmen Marc Cheverie has gone through a great year of learning and is the heir apparent. If our appeal for a fifth year for Mannino is not approved, we expect Marc will be our guy.

R. Hewitt:Englewood : - How's your pal Enrico Blasi and his team going to do this weekend?

Gwozdecky - The Redhawks have had a great season and I fully expect them to be in the CCHA Championship game on Saturday night.

Twister, Denver - Can you give us your assessment of this year's freshmen? I think they are an excellent class.

Gwozdecky - We had had to rely heavily on our freshmen class throughout the season. They are terrific student-athletes and have done a tremendous job for us on and off of the ice.

B. Richards,Arvada: - What are the team's travel plans to the Final Five?

Gwozdecky - We are departing for St. Paul on Wednesday evening.

G. Smithson, Denver: - Will John Ryder be in the lineup this weekend?

Gwozdecky - John Ryder will not be available to us for the rest of the season due to his wrist injury.

J. Gamboudi,Denver: - Will anyone from your staff being scouting other tourneys this weekend?

Gwozdecky - We will be recording all of the televised games from each of the conference tournaments. Our staff will not be attending other tournaments to scout.

Jack, Golden - On what basis is DU appealing for Peter Mannino to get a fifth year of eligibility? That would be great to see him again next year.

Gwozdecky - It was an attempt at a joke. Peter Mannino will exhaust his eligibility at the end of this season and we are not appealing for further eligibility.

Moderator - That's all the questions we have time for DU fans. Thanks for participating in today's chat and best of luck this weekend to Coach Gwoz and the Pioneers.

I didn't realize they were petitioning for a 5th year for Manno. Although if he has interest in playing on a higher level he's got to work on controlling his rebounds.

Guess I should've read all the way to the end...

There goes LetsGoDU's April fools Joke.

DU is asking for the 5th year due to the fact that Mannino was in a rotation for three years with Fisher and lost 66 starts. Its pretty standard stuff. :-)

I thought the questions asked were all pretty good. Pretty interesting how the coach was evasive or vague on a lot of the answers. That tells me that they were good questions that he didn't want to answer publicly.

Props to the coach for taking the time to do it and bring some exposure to the DU Athletics Website.
