DU Officially Releases 2008-09 Hockey Schedule

DENVER - The University of Denver will open its 2008-09 season by hosting 2008 NCAA runner-up Notre Dame in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game on Saturday, Oct. 11, two-time National Coach of the Year George Gwozdecky announced today.

DU will play 18 of its 35 games against teams which qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including four games each against Colorado College, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin.

"Once again, we are looking forward to playing one of the premier schedules in the country," Gwozdecky said. "We're honored to host the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game, especially against a quality opponent like Notre Dame. We’re proud to host this special game, which supports such a worthy cause. The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame’s foundation is comprised of many collegiate hockey players and it is indeed an honor to bring this game to the Denver market for the first time.”

The Pioneers and Fighting Irish split a two-game series in South Bend, Ind., last season. The Fighting Irish claimed the 2008 NCAA West Regional and advanced to their first Frozen Four in school history, while the Pioneers returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

DU's 21-game home schedule is highlighted by two-game series' against Wisconsin (Oct. 17-18), Ohio State (Oct. 24-25) and Minnesota (Nov. 21-22), and single games against Colorado College (Oct. 31 & March 7). The Pioneers welcome Boston University (Hockey East), RPI (ECACHL) and Holy Cross (Atlantic Hockey) to the 17th Annual Wells Fargo Denver Cup on Jan. 2-3 at Magness Arena. In addition, DU hosts Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 7-8), Colgate (Nov. 28), Air Force (Nov. 29), Michigan Tech (Jan. 9-10), Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 30-31) and St. Cloud State (Feb. 27-28).

The Pioneers play at Colorado College (Nov. 1 & Feb. 13), St. Cloud State (Nov. 14-15), Michigan Tech (Dec. 5-6), Minnesota State (Dec. 12-13), North Dakota (Jan. 23-24), Minnesota Duluth (Feb. 6-7) and Wisconsin (Feb. 20-21).

DU finished third in the WCHA last season and participated in its 19th NCAA Tournament with a 26-14-1 record. Leading scorer Tyler Bozak (Regina, Saskatchewan) highlights the group of 21 returning letterwinners. Bozak became the third freshman since 1986-87 to lead the Pioneers in scoring with 34 points on 18 goals and 16 assists. IIHF World Junior participants Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) also return.

Season tickets for the 2008-09 season go on sale Wednesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. DU continues its commitment to provide the community with the most affordable and exciting entertainment in the Denver metro area. Ticket packages begin at $192.

Individual game tickets go on sale Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., with prices ranging from $18 -$35 for adults and children's tickets beginning at $10.

The Quality Control guy must have taken a siesta. The Pios play UND twice in Grand Forks while MTU is scheduled for four games.

You are correct. DU has since edited their website and cleared up the mistake. Obviously DU's Quality Control Guru is not as thorough as ours.

I don't like your non-WCHA schedule so much. I think it could be powered up a little more. It's not bad, but I think it could have been reved up even more. I think you should shed the Denver Cup every other year and hit the road. My thoughts for whatever it is worth.
