BEIJING - Jessica Brizeida LOPEZ AROCHA, the first ever gymnast from the University of Denver to compete in the Olympic Games, placed 43rd overall in the women's all-around competition on Sunday.
Lopez, competing for Venezuela, finished with a score of 56.175. She needed to finish in the top 24 in the all-around competition to move on to the finals on Friday.
Competing in Subdivision I on Sunday morning in Beijing, Lopez placed 52nd overall in floor exercise with a score of 13.95, and 61st overall in balance beam with a 14.050. Lopez placed 61st on uneven bars, scoring a 13.800, and finished 56th in vault with a score of 14.375, which was her highest score in any event.
DU sophomore Annamari Maaranen also earned the right to compete in Beijing, representing Finland, but a knee injury suffered in January while competing for the Pioneers kept her out of the summer Games.
