It may not be one of the better-known sports organizations in Las Vegas, but some of the valley's top athletic talent has been practicing at an old family roller skating rink for years and traveling the country to compete against the best inline hockey teams in the nation. One of the best players in the program is 16 year old DU recruit Jason Zucker.

Zucker is so good that he plays up an age group with the 18 year olds. He was also recently named to the U.S. Developmental Ice Hockey team and has a scholarship to play for the University of Denver.

Zucker's teammate Max Nicastro is getting ready to accept his hockey scholarship to Boston University and was drafted by the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings.

The Las Vegas Tour Rebels hockey club plays in northwest Las Vegas. Larry Sanford, owner of the skating center, also coaches most of the club's six teams in five age groups.

The club is about to attend the 2008 North American Roller Hockey Championship nationals in San Jose, Calif., where the Las Vegas teams were expected to make a serious run at a national title this season.

"It's a very big deal this year, because every year we come so close or lose in the finals," said Chris Francis, 19. "It's our goal this year to win at three different levels. We're the best we've ever been this year."

Playing roller hockey in Las Vegas helps keep many players in shape for the ice hockey season.
