WINDSOR, Ont. - The family of a budding hockey star who died suddenly last winter near Windsor, Ont., says he died of an underlying heart condition. The same condition that afflicts incoming DU freshman David Carle.

On the afternoon of February 18, 2008, team captain Mickey Renaud died at Windsor Regional Hospital in the emergency room after collapsing at his home in Tecumseh, at the age of 19. In a statement, his family says an autopsy determined that the player died of a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

The family says toxicological tests showed no evidence of drugs and that today's statement would be the only public comment it would issue.

Renaud had been drafted by the NHL's Calgary Flames at the time of his death.
