Oilers To Retire DU Alum Glenn Anderson's Number

It looks to be a memorable winter for former University of Denver hockey player Glenn Anderson.

Anderson, who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 10, was told Wednesday that his No. 9 will be retired to the rafters of Edmonton's Rexall Place on Jan. 18, when the hometown Oilers welcome Wayne Gretzky and the Phoenix Coyotes.

He is the seventh member of the Oilers so honoured, joining Al Hamilton (3), Paul Coffey (7), Mark Messier (11), Jari Kurri (17), Grant Fuhr (31) and Gretzky (99), now head coach of the Coyotes.

"Putting Glenn's number up with the other honoured players at Rexall Place is absolutely deserving," Oilers president Kevin Lowe said. "It is the right thing for our organization to do."

Anderson only played one season at the University of Denver (1978-79) but he recorded 26 goals, 29 assists in 41 games. After playing for DU, Anderson played on the Canadian Olympic team in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. The Edmonton Oilers drafted Anderson in the 4th round of the 1979 NHL Draft. He won five Stanley Cups with Edmonton and won a final Cup with the New York Rangers.

Anderson, 47, had 498 goals and 601 assists for 1,099 points in 1,129 games over 16 NHL seasons with the Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and the Rangers.

Anderson was drafted 69th overall by Edmonton in 1979, and was a teammate of Coffey, Gretzky, Fuhr, Kurri and Messier during the Oilers' dynasty years.
