DU Completes Stirring Comeback To Win 6-5

(above) Rhett Rakhshani is profiled in both the New York Daily News and USCHO.com today

"They came at us unlike I've ever seen a team come at us before," Wisconsin goaltender Shane Connelly said of the Pioneers.
It was a bittersweet night at Magness Arena. Word quickly spread that "Boone Was Dead" and DU fell behind 4-1 in the second period. However it was a heroic effort led by Patrick Wiercioch who led a comeback for the ages. Wiercioch tallied two goals and added an assist.

DU wins 6-5... {sigh}

Rhett Rakhshani profile in NY Daily News
We can't thank all of the alums, students and DU hockey fans who supported our efforts to "Bring Boone Back" to the University of Denver. Particularly, Peter Mannino who started the whole movement by the simple gesture of painting Boone on his helmet.

Its been a rocky road over the past three years with Boone. At the end of the day, we fought the good fight and our efforts just weren't good enough. The past two weeks were our finest hour. People were excited about DU and proud to be Pioneers.

Go DU & LetsGoDU

Scored tix at the last minute to the game, glad I was there ... DU forwards played amazing, but the Badgers' goalie was even better, on his head ... 52 shots on net for the Pios, and that dang goalie made some amazing stops. At the end of the first period, I was ready to give HIM a round of applause ...

Two of those goals against Chevy were freaks, one a deflection of a defender's stick, and the other went up in the air and bounced in off his back ... not going to blame him for those, but the three others ... well, c'mon.

Pios were a bit lax on passing, not as crisp as they could've been at times.

But a win's a win. This one proves DU has the firepower to spare. And the defense will improve with time.

All is not lost if what Swami posted is 100% true. Students and alums can still use Boone's facsimile without any reprucussions from the school. So Boonetown can still live on and Boone pep rallys can still be held. Boone is still on Chevy's mask. The shirts DG handed out last weekend can still be worn.

As long as people keep Boone in the forefront, wear their coonskin hats, Boone t-shirts and cheer for their Pioneers all is not lost.

And DG, the package was here when we got home, pix will be yours from the next game, Ohio State next weekend. Thanks, man.

WHAT A GUT CHECK WIN!!!! That game was crazy! 24-5 in shots in the first period! I've never seen such an offensive push in the first period. Then in the second the Badgers were taking the body everywhere! Our PP sucked until the third when it came through twice. Mullen was once again incredible. Adam just sucked. How many flipping penalties were called? So my question is was the Salazar game winner really a goal or was it twilight zone revisited with the replay? I was in section 19 and it looked like he was in the crease. We'll have to wait for the replay on utube. Can't wait for tomorrow. Gotta love the way this team responded to screwing up in the second! Hope they learn from it. In the post game coach said you have to work hard every single shift. If you don't you pay for it!

Awesome game tonight!
oh, and Boone rules...bring him back, DU.

No box is posted as of yet. Here's a link to badger summary of the game. It says the game winner went of a badger and was allowed even though a pioneer was in the crease.

meant to type " game winner went OFF a badger"

Blogger won't let me edit. Makes me feel like the tech in the video reply booth--duh!

Wiercoach got the winner--his second of the night. Love the irony he was supposed to be a Badger! Box score is up on DU's site. A total of 19 penalties called. DU was 3 for 11 on the PP and UW was 2 for 8 (one of which was JP's major--which I thought was a lousy call. The other one was the non-call at the end of the second when the big badger (that helps narrow it down--their all built like trees!) took a cheap shot after the horn sounded. Adam turns around and gives them off setting roughing calls--nice work idiot!

Pretty entertaining, but sloppy game.

I really liked the band in in the middle of the student section, too. They started out a little slow, but by the third period, the student section and the band were working together quite well.

When DU took the lead, the students went bonkers. Very cool to watch.

I must say -- It is total bullshit that the DU game was buried on the AM band on 560 and yet the lousy farkers from CC had their game broadcast on The Fan FM 104.3.

How does this happen? I blame the Conserverals.

Still ... Go DEW. Sloppy Sloppy but we managed a victory. Lets see the same tomorrow night when I make my way into the stands.

And the best to Jim White and his family on this evening ... Lets complete this sweep this weekend for him!!!!

GO DU!

Nice article on Rock. Our old buddy, Elliot Olashansky penned it. Unbelievable that two NYC newspapers would have two college hockey articles in October. Can a Frozen Four at MSG be far off???

It is tough to take DG, I am disappointed though not surprised. My thanks to all who put in such a tremendous effort. Boone will live on in our hearts.
How about those PIOS! I had to turn up the setting on my pace maker. I like the fact that they didn't give up, they kept on it the entire 3rd period.

I am still concerned about Colbourne, he didn't play that much. Mullen has played two great games, they guy never gives up.

DU has 11 goals this season in 2 games. 8 of them in the third period.

DU is 2nd in the WCHA in Power Play at 26%.

DU is 1st in the WCHA in scoring at 5.50 goals per game.

The Scoring Czar leads the team in +/- with +3.

Colborne is -1. Heard he's struggling, not sure if he has any injury issues.

Impressive comeback & really entertaining game to watch. Scary to see how much firepower this team has and how when it chooses to go full throtle what it can do. Chevy let in a few very soft goals. Hopefully an an aberration and not the norm for the season. Hopefully they can put away Wisc. early tonight which they should be able to do.

Watched Minny & St. Cloud prior to the DU game and all I can say is that they had better be ready when they play DU based on what I saw last night.

Where was Colbourne? I saw him out on a few shifts but he was basically MIA. I am still waiting to see what all the hype is about.

The NHL drafts players for the future, and Colborne is very much a project player. Colborne is struggling to adapt to the speed of the college game, which is not at all unusual for an 18 year old that is still growing into his very large adult body.

He does have skills, but looks very tentative out there, and that can only be overcome with effort and risk. He's got to get his feet moving more and trust his instincts.

Give him time.

Angélique C. Murray (Jori) said...

The Swami has it. Colborne wont make an immediate impact. He still looks a bit lost and it will take him some time to adjust. You can see the talent, but he's very raw.

While I would agree that Colbourne is the prototype of what the NHL looks for in terms of size (i.e. when I saw him play in the AJ he reminded me of a young Joe Thorton) and that he is indeed young, I don't agree with the notion that he "needs time" given that Turris and 100's of others others from Tier II backgrounds have hit the ground running in college hockey and have not had any trouble adjusting to the college game. Actually there is very little difference between a good AJ or BC game and a good college game given that many of the players are scholarship players. Perhaps the notion that he is a "can't miss" player and the shift to the states from Cammy will take him a while to wrap his head around but he needs to play the way he is capable of and soon. He really should be the most dominant player in college hockey hands down given his size and ability and he needs to get it in gear.

Colborne is a lot like a Blake Wheeler (Minnesota), Brian Boyle (BC), Hugh Jessiman (Dartmouth) or Joe Finley (UND) - all where tall and gangly (over 6-3) 18 year old NHL first rounders that took a while to adjust as 18 year olds to a college game played by faster and smaller players.

Be patient. The adjustment is much quicker for smaller guys than it is for players who are still growing into their bodies.
