DU In Running For Big Time Recruit Jeremy Morin

(left) Jeremy Morin

Jeremy Morin a big time prospect — once the Eastern Junior Hockey Leauge's Rookie of the Year and recently listed as a probable first round draft choice by Central Scouting & a Top 10 NHL Draft Choice by ISS in their latest rankings.

"Right now, it's in between North Dakota, Denver and BU," he said after Saturday's game.

NHLDraftSite.com has Morin going to the Washington Capitals with the 13th overall pick in their mock draft. He would fit quite nicely with DU commitments & current USNDP teammate Drew Shore going in the 1st Round (11th overall) to Florida Panthers. William Wrenn is projected to be drafted in 2nd Round (56th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings. Defenseman Paul Phillips is projected to be taken 3rd Round (63rd overall) to Blue Jackets.

As a Sioux fan I'm hoping we get lucky and get this kid as well. However, rumors about his academics keep following him and interviews like this always raise speculation that it is just a play against the Kitchener Rangers. The one thing that is certain is that this kid is on a fast track to the NHL, so if he does play college hockey it is hard to imagine it will be for more than one year. But that would be a nice year to have for any university.

North Dakota fans should feel good that he mentioned UND first. Thay might be a tip off.

Would DU have room for this guy if does commit for 2009? He sounds like a stud, so I'm guessing Gwoz would make room. Or is safe to assume that the Tylers, Rhett etc might be bolting early?

DU probably has some wiggle room for Morin if he chooses us. It's a safe bet that at least one forward will leave early after this year. My money would be on Bozak leaving, since he's 22 already and had NHL offers last year. Rhett and Rueggs are not setting the league on fire right now, and unless things change and they do take another step in their development, I think they'll stick around for another year, assuming their NHL teams are happy with them developing at Denver.

The other option DU has is they can always re-purpose a couple of partial scholarships to make a whole one and pulling the money from fringe players who are not sufficiently contributing.

Swami,

You're probably right on Bozak, unfortunately. I actually had a pretty good source on campus who last year was told Bozak was leaving. Thankfully it was unfounded.

I think we are all still waiting for Rhett and Rueggs to find their their groove. Tyler has been working really hard but not getting the results. I think Rhett needs to play with a bit more tenacity.

What's the future for guys like Cook, Brehm, Cunningham, and Vossberg? I'm guessing they are all partial scholies at best.....DU could pull money from them to get a player of Morin's caliber?

is it just me or is next year's class absolutely loaded? isn't matt donovan part of that class w/ shore, wrenn, philips....

Jeremy Morin is a great player, but he's a Mass kid, so there is virtually no way we will get him. He's gonna commit to BU. sorry guys.

also, brehm, cook, cunningham and vossberg are not on scholarships. They pay to play.

If he has a criminal record, he's probably heading to the Sioux.

If not, then he may grace DU with his presence for a year or two.

Maybe I'm making generalizations about the Sioux, but they have always had some players of questionable character.

Yeah, highly doubtful Morin heads west since he has Hockey East in his backyard.

Morin is from Auburn, NY which is to the north of Ithaca (Cornell) and west of Syracuse, not exactly Hockey East country but more ECAC. The ECAC teams are not on his list. My understanding is that the Kitchener Rangers went to watch him last weekend at the Four Nations Cup Tournament in Lake Placid which the U-18s won.
