DU Recruit Helps Lead USA To Gold Medal

DU recruit Matt Donovan had two assists in the championship game of the 2008 World Junior A Challenge to help lead the US team to its first ever Gold Medal in the tournament. Donovan was also named to the six man all-tournament team.

The United States Junior Select Team used four power play goals enroute to a 7-1 victory over Canada West in the championship game. The U.S. finished the tournament with a 4-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

"I really liked the composure of our team throughout the tournament," said Mark Carlson, head coach of Team USA. "The guys stuck to our game plan and were rewarded with the championship which is something special."

The US team made it to the championship game by defeating Canada East, 5-1 in the semi-finals. Donovan was named Team USA's Player of the Game.

Last year DU freshman Joe Colborne won a gold medal in this event for Team Canada West.

Donovan was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 4th round of the 2008 NHL Draft and will play for DU next season.

NOTES: Seven different players scored goals for Team USA in the championship game ... Mike Cichy, who led the tournament with 10 points (5-5), was named the most valuable player of the World Junior A Challenge and earned a spot on the six-player all-star team along with teammates Mike Lee, Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) and Craig Smith ... Team USA outshot Canada West, 39-19 ... Teams participating in the 2008 World Junior A Challenge include Belarus, Canada East, Canada West, Germany, Russia and the United States.
