DU defenseman Patrick Wiercioch has been invited to Team Canada's Selection Camp. He will miss DU's games against Minnesota State University in mid-December. If he makes Team Canada's Under-21 Team, he will also miss the Denver Cup.
It is a tremendous honor to be named to any of the national teams. Wiercioch's selection is considered to be somewhat of a surprise, because he didn't attend Canada's Camp this Summer. But his play for DU this Fall has been so impressive, that the Canadian selectors made the decision to invite him.
He was selected by the Ottawa Senators in last summer's NHL draft. The Selection Camp and Tournament will be held in Ottawa and Senator fans are said to be thrilled with the opportunity to see one of their prime prospects play at the Camp and perhaps in the Tourney.
In all, four goaltenders, 14 defenceman, and 20 forwards were invited. The roster will be cut to 22 players on Dec. 15. Wiercioch will have to be one of the top 6 or 7 defensemen. Team Canada could potentially field 13 NHL first round draft choices so competition for each spot will be steep.

Good luck to Wiercioch. Hopefully he isn't too impressive and the Sens don't pluck him away......!!
I noticed Riley Nash from Cornell is getting a tryout. Wasn't he close to coming to DU a couple years ago?
Yep.
DU's near misses have also turned out to be very good hockey players including Riley Nash, Brock Bradford, Chad Rau and Richard Bachman.
Its a credit to our coach staff and recruiting program when DU not only lands great players like Bozak, Colborne, Rakhshani and Ruegsegger but the "near misses" are also great players.
Right now DU is working hard on putting together its 2010 recruiting class and you can bet that DU will be in the mix with some of the best programs in the country. You can't win them all, but as long as the scouting remains solid we'll do alright. :-)
