Denver 2 - North Dakota 2 FINAL

North Dakota Brings NASCAR Fans To The WCHA

DU and North Dakota played to a thrilling 2-2 tie in Grand Forks, ND on Saturday night. But the play on the ice was overshadowed by Denver head coach George Gwozdecky's ejection in the 2nd Period.

After a missed call and a subsequent Bench Minor Penalty against DU, Gwozdecky protested. He was immediately thrown out of the game by WCHA refree Todd Anderson.

Not content to go quietly into the night, Gwozdecky boldly strode across the ice to give the referees "the business."

Gwozdecky has only been ejected one other time in his career. It happened three seasons ago against UND after Sioux forward Mike Prpich speared Denver’s Geoff Paukovich below the belt. Anderson also was the ref in that game, Gwozdecky said.

“It was a little bit of a spectacle,” Sioux goalie Brad Eidsness said. “But it might have worked. DU got five straight power plays after that.

After the ejection the Pioneers played their most inspired hockey of the weekend. It was a fitting tribute for their departed coach.

With the one point for the tie, DU remains in first place in the WCHA.

Anderson is an absolute joke of an excuse for an referee. It is time that the WCHA steps up and suspends this cocky punk. He is an embarrassment to the sport of hockey.

DU is all alone in 1st place one point ahead of UND.

Correction DG - I think DU still holds onto 1st place with 24 points to ND's 23 points.

DU maintained their lead by 1, I think. Anyway, what is up with dasher Gwoz? Does he do this just for NoDak? I would have loved to be there for the crowd reaction. Great game DU. That was a lot of fun. I think this game is indicative of what playoff hockey would be like between our 2 teams. Go Sioux, next time! Dasher Gwoz, you did it again to the delight of Nodaks all over the state.

And I agree - Anderson needs to go. He is worthless.

Corrected. Thanks

Anderson has always been one of the worst. How he's maintained a job... no idea.

Anyways that's the kind of hockey I expect from this DU team. Even though they tied they did everything they could, they fought for the puck, they crashed the net... they responded to the call when Gwoz was kicked out, which by the way I salute Gwoz for.

Even if we lose or tie if I see our boys play like they mean it... give it 100%, then I'm happy. I mean as most of you know I get on DU's case when we win and play down to the opponent's level. They better engrave this game into their memory the rest of the season and bring the same effort and commitment for the rest of the season.

Actually, when Gwoz was informed of his ejection, he said "You have got to be shitting me."

It was bullshit nonetheless, but that was a good point earned by the Pioneers tonight.

I don't see a mullet anywhere, and hillbillies live in the "hllls", jackass. Ever been to North Dakota? Denver on the other hand has plenty. Hmmmmm.

Yesterday's game was a classic. Win, lose or draw. It was good stuff. I never fully understood when NoDak forum's call Coach Gwoz "The Dasher" or things to that effect. Now I get it with the dashboard move. I think it is great the ND-DU have this 2nd tier rivalry going since I am a NoDakian who lives in Denver. Makes this a lot of fun. Go Sioux!, and great game yesterday Pios.

haha North Dakota people are goofy rednecks...I bet half the people in the stands are related to each other some how.

I find it funny how you all stand up and say what Belding did was fine. But on the other hand if Hakstol would have done the same thing last night you would have wanted his head.

Wow in that first video... I never heard such a dumb group of f**** in the entire world.

Anonymous said...

Listen to the first video, it represents that charater of the entire UND program - fights seemingly every weekend, coaches flipping off refs, and the Judy's Tavern arrests that went unpunished for the sake of winning.

The only thing that would have made the first video better would have been if the UND PA system had broken out "Cotton Eyed Joe"

DU took a big step forward last night, which was great to see. They deserved a W, but getting at least a point was very important. After Friday's debacle, the Pios had to respond in strong fashion, and they did. When these guys play inspired hockey they can be as good as anyone in the country. When they don't they can be very mediocre. The inconsistency is maddening, but they continue to hold on to 1st place in the WCHA.

Looking ahead, DU has 10 games left in the regular season. On paper at least, the schedule is not terribly daunting. Before the road trip to Madison in late February, the Pios have 5 very winnable games, starting with the UAA series next weekend. UAA, while appearing to be an improved team this year, is still toiling near the bottom of the standings. DU has to sweep. Duluth, also improved, remains in the bottom half. And CC appears to be regressing. DU simply has to beat CC down the stretch and get the Gold Pan back. I think the Pios have a realistic chance to win 8 of the last 10, putting them at 23 wins.

Last night the REAL DU team showed up. And I LIKE them. No question NoDak isa good team and I can easily see DU and NoDak seeing each other again at the Final Five.

My IQ dropped a bit just watching that first vid.

I can speak from first hand experience, at the FF last year, all of the haircuts, windbreakers, and IQ levels were from around the 90's in the North Dakota section, save for those who understood enough to trash talk the BC guys cause 7 is more than 2...

And I've long been a proponent of public stoning for Shepherd and Anderson. What a joke those guys are. Makes the WCHA look like a joke. Its great how UND can complain that they didn't get a 5 on 3 when Gwozdecky was ejected, but turn a blind eye to the obvious blown call that started the whole thing.

After getting into an email fight with G Shepherd though, it becomes clear how hopeless the officiating situation for the league is. The guy is an absolute moron. Can't spell, can't articulate. Ridiculous. And he's never going to fault his kid or his adopted son (daughter? the face makes it hard to tell) Anderson.

gwoz made hak look lke a saint after flipping the bird last year, there should have been a delay of game or forfiet, read the rules people and im a denver fan and am embarassed by gwoz and his actions.looked like a bafoon

rulebook
http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uploads/PDF/2008-10_MW_IceHockeyRules7ff9e6ab-7d20-441b-b768-522bfb15c487.pdf

GG was penalized under Rule 6, Section 1.d.

He should have been penalized under Rule 6, Section 44.a. -- His entrance onto the ice was a refusal to start play. What's the penalty for that?

UND 1, DU 0 (Final, by forfeit)

And for those of you without the rulebook ...

Under Rule 4, Section 10, no, the game can not be retroactively made a forfeit; however, it should have been called such by Anderson and Campion under 6:44.a.

However, 4:10 says GG's actions may (should) face additional scrutiny.

eidsness stole a point for und, du should be pissed they didnt get 2 points but thats what a solid goalie can do for you..eidsness was a stud last night, we easily could have won that game if not for him

The real difference between DU and UND. Not a whole lot of DU fans have moved to North Dakota. North Dakota fans moved here becaose they know ND sucks in everyway. I have seen the place and it sucks. They have to bring their recruits in at night.

Anonymous said...

wow, mature post. people hate north dakota so they move. wow, man those are some brilliant words. what a idiot you are. we all know north dakota isnt the best state to live for industies and job opportunities but grow up. im a denver fan and resident and have been back to g forks. they have 50,000 people there and fill 12,00 every night for a hockey game, why? because they are psssionate and liove their team. so why is it when und comes to denver that 1500 of our 6000 smaller arena are sioux fans? because they love their team and travel anywhere. what a ignorant statement and sad statement.

Anonymous said...

and that so called crappy town has a top program every year, get top recruits and fill their arena unlike DU who nevewr fills unless cc or und are in town and then und has louder fans anyhow. i love my pioneers but hate posters who rip others towns or cities. take annot from sioux fans and fill our rink, be passionate every year and dont bash others towns for no reason. im sure it must really suck for recruits to visit the best arena in the world and best facilities, underground treadmils and xray machines..and by the way, they landed top recruits there before that arena..im a denver native but lived in fargo and loved visiting grand forks

calm down man. everyone knows that these message boards are a joke. so what if he bashes und and their town. you know otherwise so who cares. I say nodak sucks because they do. whatev. i know they have a good team. but thats just what fans do. it doesn't mean anything. so don't take it personally. GO PIOS

4:59....are you the guy that writes rambling and largely incoherent posts and then answers these posts as if you were someone else?? Like in this case? Just curious...whoever posted at 4:59 sounds a helluva lot like the two previous posts.

Lets not deny it: North and South Dakota are in the middle of nowhere. End of story. Want to know why the place is packed every night? Because there is nothing else to do but drink, watch hockey, and sleep with your sister.

I REALLY respect Gwoz for this move. He stuck up for the players against such a stupid non call. I don't know bout you guys but North Dakato fans scare the hell out of me. Truly...the biggest D-bags in hockey.

Rather hilarious that DU fans consider Sioux fans coarse Hillbillies (where there are no hills?!!), mulletheads, and non-intellectual. Whereas rival North Dakota State (NDSU) fans consider Sioux fans to be preppy, turtle-neck and Birkenstock wearing intellectual snobs.

Could you imagine a clash of NDSU - DU cultures? !!!

UND fan--quit your bitching. Your team got 3 points over the weekend. Go back under your rock and quit being so insecure.

The ND fans at magness are ND escapees who now live in colorado.

...escapees of the wood chipper.

DU fans showed a lot more class before the ass kicking of Friday night. Now everyone is on here ripping North Dakota because they're little PIOS got taken out behind the woodshed. You guys are lamer than Gopher fans. Have fun choking the rest of your season away. Go eat some tofu while your at it.

msbdu said...

By the way annoymous, it is you're not your. I would guess that English composition and spelling is not a requirement at ND!

9:35......did you leave your balls at your hairdresser over the weekend?? Quit being so sensitive, homeboy. Your team earned 3 points over the weekend. Congratulations. Other than that you've accomplished nothing. So go back to playing Dungeons and Dragons in your mom's basement.

And by the way, your fan base has class like manure has fragrance.

When some team gives the North Dakota goalie the "Glen Anderson" treatment the Sioux season will be over.

If the Sioux were to lose their starting goalie, all they have backing him up are two third stringers. I'm actually kind of shocked he didn't get steamrolled at some point last weekend.

As a Wisconsin fan (in a family of Minnesota fans) I can say we'll back up the Pioneers over the Sioux any day. End of discussion.

Anonymous said...

DU fans should just be thankful that the Sioux had enough class to not end any of the Pioneers players seasons. I have no idea why Denver would want to come in to the ralph with the intention of mixing things up. This didn't really help Minnesota out two weeks earlier, did it? Don't try to match UND's style of play because you don't have players that can fill that role. Be thankful you got out of there with 1 point and no season ending injuries.
