DU Ties Holy Cross - Wins Shootout To Play BU

DU 2 - Holy Cross 2 Final OT ..... BU 6 - RPI 2
It wasn't pretty on Friday night in Magness Arena as DU skated to a 2-2 tie with Holy Cross.

Holy Cross employeed Muhammad Ali's "rope-a-dope" tactics and despite being severely outshot, managed to outfox DU throughout the evening. Very frustrating for a talented DU team to play this kind of opponent, who packed everyone around their goalie. Denver was free to move the puck around the perimeter, but were unable to pierce the Crusader's defensive shield.

Luckily DU found the back of the net on 4 of 5 shootout opportunities to advance against Boston University in the Denver Cup.

Shootout. That was freakin awesome. Game though wasn't DU's best, I'm sure Coach is giving them a bit of a talk to this evening. Bye bye Holy Cross, have fun on your trip back to Wooh-Sta, as they say in the Bay State (and not Wor- chest- er. Ha

Wow, what a frustrating game tonight. I'm glad the Pios get a chance to play BU tomorrow, but geez, a tie vs Holy Cross is tough to swallow. I had a bad feeling after the 1st period with all of those chances and DU not being able to finish.

There were definitely sequences during which the Pios looked a bit rusty--they will have to be much sharper tomorrow to beat BU.

DU can't go 0-7 on the PP and expect to win. DU not make enough adjustments when HC was able to get PK pressure high. DU needs to be more physical against smaller teams.

Frustrating game, but lots' o drama,

Not a proud night for the referees.

They scored a goal, disallowed said goal, appeared no butcher - not one but two replays, spent over 10 minutes reviewing a replay, allowed a Zamboni on the ice before the shootout, stopped the Zamboni in mid-lap, then decided to allow two Zamboni's to resurface the middle of the ice.

Maybe we need to go to 5 referees. :-)

Yeah, the refs did not have their best game. Looked as though they were still on holiday.

Speaking of refs, do you all ntoice these linesmen and their propensity for tossing guys, especially DU players, out of the faceoff circle?? I can't remember their names but it's really annoying. I can't figure out of they are on a power trip or just like to fake out the players before dropping the puck.

Pathetic display of hockey tonight and I hope Gwoz ripped them open a new one and reminds them they are DU!

PLAY DU HOCKEY and stop trying to make the PP pretty.

DG--You forgot to mention how many times they got in the way of play. I don't think I saw any of them make any effort to move out of the way.

Not a good way to start 2009. Holy Cross is a team Denver should beat every time out. Much tougher test tonight, but let's hope for a better result.

I saw my first college hockey game last night--very cool experience. You guys have an awesome arena and a good team. Denver-Boston should be a dandy.

BTW--I was curious--beer and booze are sold at your arena but not at the Frozen Four, Final Four and other NCAA events. Does your arena have some special license? I was very pleasantly surprised to be able to have a couple of cool ones last night!

The NCAA allows schools to sell any kind of alcohol they want.

However, each school and sometimes, their conferences, may have alcohol policies that they must follow.

NCAA Championship events may not sell alcohol.

I don't think we have a special beer license, I think the individual schools can choose to serve beer or not. DU also serves mixed drinks. at NCAA sanctioned events like the frozen four and the regionals there is no alcohol served. I remember going to columbus and having a horrid hangover by the end of the CC DU game because of it.
