Volcano Threatens To Cancel UAA-SCSU Series

(above) Mount Redoubt is set to blow

Turns out that explosion you heard last weekend in Alaska, wasn't DU's hockey season imploding in Magness Arena. Its just a volcano.

This weekend's hockey series between Alaska-Anchorage and St. Cloud State is in danger of being scrapped due to impending volcanic eruption.

Scientists are concerned that Mount Redoubt, which is roughly 100 miles from Anchorage, could erupt at any moment sending a storm of ash "several millimeters" thick raining down on the city and effectively shutting it off from the rest of the world. So officials in St. Cloud have been warned of the possibility that the team might not be able to fly to Alaska this weekend.

The riskiest place to be during an eruption is, unquestionably, on an airplane. Ash can get into the engines and cause them to stall in mid-flight.

If Mount Redoubt erupts Tuesday or before the team leaves Wednesday, the trip is cancelled. But if the volcano erupts while the team is in Anchorage, they could be stranded in Alaska for days, or even weeks.

A postponed series could add up at the end of the season.

It's good to see that rank exaggeration doesn't stand in the way of good blog fodder on blogs other than LetsGoDU.

At most an ash event lasts a few hours. It could conceivably disrupt air traffic for a day (at most). This isn't anything new to us ... UAA had a tournament cancelled during the 92-93 season when Redoubts neighbor Mt. Spurr erupted.

I know there's some good Palin jokes just waiting to be made ... so at least this is good for that.

Living 40 miles away from Mt. Redoubt on Redoubt Ave, nonetheless, in Kenai, AK.... This volcano will disrupt little. It will blow again eventually, but no one knows when. There is an expression up here in Alaska, "A watched volcano never blows." Good luck DU this weekend and keep up the good work Damien...
