Donovan Survives 1st Round Of Cuts At USA Camp

DU Freshman defenseman Matt Donovan survived the first round of cuts to make 29 man Roster at the USA Under-20 Evaluation Camp.

Donovan was touted by Mike Chambers last week as possibly the best incoming defensemen in all of college hockey next season. So far it looks like Chambers is on the money.

DU Freshmen Drew Shore and William Wrenn also were invited to the camp and were cut today. As 1991 birth years, both players will have the opportunity to make the team next year.

The remaining 29 players at the camp will participate in intrasquad drills and scrimmages against the Russian team. The final USA Roster will be announced in December.

Congratulations to Donovan. I can't wait to see this kid in a DU uniform this season. How many cuts are there?

Bummer for Wrenn and Shore. What are we to make of Shore? Was he a bit overrated to begin with? The talk was he was a 1st round pick but then slipped. And I'm assuming he won't be happy not making Team USA.

I would not read too much into Shore slipping into the second round of the draft or not making the Junior team roster of 29. It's hard for a '91 player make it, as the tourney and the preparations for it really favor the older players.

The Final USA Roster will have 22 players and will be announced the first week of December.

The USA scouts will monitor the 29 players over the next few months and decide on the final roster in December.

They could select other players cut today or not sent to the camp, but that's pretty unlikely.

Colborne wasn't even invited to Team Canada's Camp last year, so Shore will need to use this as a motivator for next year.
