(above) David Carle talks to DU assistant Coach Derek Lalonde
"There were some nights that week where I'd talk to him until 2, 3 in the morning after games. He couldn't sleep. He felt like he was walking around with a ticking time bomb."- Former DU star Matt Carle
From: Denver Post
by Mike Chambers
Carle recalls "messing around" on the ice before practice with DU assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Steve Miller. He had been cleared to skate as long as he wore a heart monitor and kept his heart rate under 160 beats per minute. If it climbed to 165, an alarm would warn him. On this day, Carle was wearing the watchlike device but his monitor wasn't on. Forty-five minutes after he was helped off the ice and while he was receiving treatment from trainer Aaron Leu, Carle said he turned it on. His heart rate was 180.
"He was obviously having arrhythmia. His heart wasn't functioning properly, but symptoms of a heart attack weren't coming into play," Leu said. "We were in communication with the doctors." (Read rest of article)

The video interview with David Carle is pretty interesting. It has some good footage of DU practices.
Interesting that the Denver Post is getting into videos to help convey a story. Obviously traditional newspaper websites are going to rely on video more in the future if they are to compete.
I don't know how many of you have had the chance to meet Dave or talk to him - but I have; and he's a great kid. What a great story this is. He has a long hockey career ahead of him. There's alot more to the game than being a player on the ice. In 5 or 6 years, he'll be another DU Hockey Alumni working in the NHL.... and another "Gwozdecky Protege" who we'll all think back on and say "I remember when he was in Magness Arena".
This year I have noticed an increase of favorable "human interest" type articles in the Denver Post re D.U. hockey. In the past they mostly just covered game reports. These articles shoud expand interest in D.U. hockey among those who only follow Avalanche or not hockey at all.
Saturday's game should be a barn burner. Hope to see you there DG
I really enjoy these stories on David. While his competitive playing days may be over, I'm sure he'll find his niche in the sport or in whatever he chooses and be very successful. High-character, strong-willed, and courageous people always find their way.
No wonder the DU coaches were so giddy over the summer. Everyone except Bozak was coming back and there was a chance that Carle & Wiercioch could of been playing together on the power play.
I'm very surprised to see that there aren't any Sioux fans in here claiming foul/cheating for the NCAA allowing DU an extra scholarship for Carle.
Darth Gwozdecky must be stopped!
After DU swept the Sioux, we don't hear much from them these days. :-)
David Carle did not almost make a comeback this season. He was feeling good and his condition improved, and he internally thought he might someday play again. He was optimistic until he collapsed on the ice before the season opener and ultimately required heart surgery. Perhaps it's my fault for not explaining this well enough in the story. David was the only one who told me there might have been a chance of a comeback. You can't blame him for that. -- MC
Mike Chambers is doing a wonderful job of following and reporting on the team. Besides the game recaps, he has provided great human interest stories regarding the players as well as keeping us fans posted with breaking news regarding injuries and who is playing and who isn't. Kudos to Mike on a great job of reporting on the DU team.
And stop saying "come back". He never went away - like all the other guys he was highly recruited, planned to come here, so he came here and he's here now, on the team today.
He's one of the best players St. Mary's-Shattuck has ever seen. Incredible skater. This kid is just getting started with hockey
Not sure what phase besides "comeback" would describe what Carle was attempting. Clearly he wanted to one day play hockey again.
Some commentors aren't happy with the use of the phrase "comeback" and perhaps he wasn't planing on coming back this season.
That being said, read the article and Chambers postscript above and draw your own conclusions.
